I'm mainly speaking of IPO's, the bond market seems somewhat more reliable. Sure, I bet there's plenty of scams there, but it makes more sense to me at least. Jita trader X wants more capital, take out a bond! Whether he succeeds, fails, or scams, at least the story is plausible.
With the stock trading side of things, people operate these enterprises and then give their profits away to investors? Why not just build the capital up yourself and then launch the business so the profits are yours? Why not debt finance instead, sure it creates steeper demands to repay... but if the business venture is solid, it shouldn't be a problem.
I have some awesome business ideas that I'd need probably a bil to get started. If I issued an IPO, then my great business ideas would go to waste in order to let others profit. It's illogical behavior so no wonder its fraught with scam artists.
I'm new here, so I must not be aware as to why stock offerings are popular. Please enlighten me about the successes of MD, where share holders have doubled their money legitimately through a business making real profit and paying a dividend over time.

Block and TS have both been around a lot longer than me but in my 18 months in EVE I have paid out roughly 25bil in interest across my various MD bonds and loans. Quite a bit of that was on earlier smaller bonds so it's difficult to quantify exactly what % investors have got back but since I have never held more than 40bil at a time it is certainly comfortably over a 50% return.
Cista has paid out some ridiculously high returns, especially on some badly thought out early bonds that she honoured through to their expiration. I remember one paid out something like 20% a month for a year!
AATPH, assuming it is still actually running, has not been very good with paying out dividends but, if you accept Ray's changing valuations of the underlying assets then the value of the shares themselves have increased by something like 100%. I expect he will soon announce a new revaluing of the BPOs on the basis of the recent prices paid for T2 prints which will shoot their claimed value up again. Personally, I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole though.
Proton Power's LYSII business paid out something like 40% returns in 6 months iirc.
Lots of small and mid-sized investments have provided returns in the region of 20-30% in three month long periods (especially if you connect up short run loan or bond sequences, such as Rykker bow's, or the SHSG ones).

I wonder the same. If you have a great business idea, why dont you just raise the money yourself? Especially when the sum in questions is less than 10 billion. The people who look for investors obv know how to earn money, or maybe they dont? Still they plan to use the investors money to earn enough for themselves, AND pay out interest.
But yeah. All the hazzle about trust issues and all that sure is worth finding investors who want to risk money on random people.
Want investors. Talk with people you already know. Send em a ****ing mail, and dont spam the forum.

When I launched my first bond I was already the richest person I knew in-game. But I had only been playing for a month and only knew a handful of other players, most of whom only had a few months under their belts themselves. Not everyone who knows how to make money has a play style that means they will have a wide circle of wealthy acquaintances ingame, and this is particularly true of traders given that trading is a largely solitary pursuit. Anyone in a large corp or alliance will have plenty of contacts but there are a lot of small corps out there for whom raising the funds to put up a pos is a long term objective.

I'm sure the majority of traders don't engage in this sort of game play and raise their assets themselves, but the ones who do it do it because....I dunno really, maybe because it's a game?
It's fun :D
