Edited by: CptConorado on 07/03/2011 23:51:44 Ok so im training for a tengu, just because it looks cool lol, I just finished shield operation level 5 and now im not sure what other shield skills to train. So i was wondering, what next? ________________________________________________ Some say the universe is almost full of honest people, well I say the universe is full of almost honest people. -Unknown |

Shield Management V Tactical Shield Manipulation IV Shield Upgrades IV
Shield Compensation IV if you'll be active-tanking it.
EM Shield Compensation, Explosive Shield Compensation, Kinetic Shield Compensation, and Thermic Shield Compensation are useful if you're using amplifiers.

Don't forget Shield Operation V. I didn't put it in my list because OP mentioned just finishing it.

Actually, if you are not so familiar with certain aspects of eve, looking at the certificates can be a help too if you need to know which skills to train. i wouldnt suggest blindly following them, but they can be helpful at times.

The certificates for shield tanking will give you a reasonable idea of the skills to train.

tactical shield manipulation 5 for example. Think hard about that train. Threads into pages about it. Most stop at 4, gets your t2 hardeners. tengu that has reached 25% shield left...needs a new pilot not tsm 5 because they not flying/fitting it right lol (even maze solo flown right doens't get tengu to 25%...maze is a 10/10 plex in case you didn't know).

For some reason, Sleepers really like shooting and neuting me more than anybody else.
One day, lag and a slow targeting carrier that just warped in causing an escalation wave, had my Tengu really hurting.
Pilot 1> Who are they targeting? Pilot 2> Tau, of course. lol Pilot 3> So all is right with the world. ... I'm at 40% shield ... Pilot 1> All reps on Tau! ... seconds pass and my shields hit full red ... Tau Cabalader> Guys, if you are ever gonna rep me, now would be a really good time! Archon Pilot> I'm still locking! ... my shields hold at 0% for several seconds ... Pilot 4> Don't be a wussy, you still have armor. ... Suddenly I get hit by a big missile volley, taking me to half armor ... Pilot 1> Whoa! That was a big hit! ... laggy reps finally reach me ... Pilot 2> It isn't a close call until you hit structure. Pilot 4> Structure fire looks awesome.
Luckily in our shield tank fleet we had an Archon that got me back to full armor in no time, once he locked.

Lastly you could consider the four compensation skills to III or IV for some extra resists when you're neuted, doing a mission where you know you'll be neuted, want to be cap stable (when you don't fit cap rigs/rechargers), wormholes and other situations where cap is/can be an issue.
Faction/deadspace passive shield hardeners aren't very expensive and with those skills they give very decent resists.

Are you sure that amplification module is affected by compensation skills? I thought it was only for passive resists?

Edited by: Misanthra on 11/03/2011 04:52:18 the amplifiers are the passive resists.
Explosion dampening amplifier does explosive damage for example.
You might be thinking of shield boost amplifier, name kind of similar lol. Those aren't affected.
And the ds resists amps are good and cheap (relatively speaking). Only ones that costs aer bad are the em ones. Want to fill that em hole, gonna cost you. Great for neut problems...I run them to get ships like my tengu cap stable if I need to. At skill level 4....about the same resists as a t2 active hardener. BUt doens't use cap.

Yes, but as theg above poster said it has its advantages.
44 tf CPU - 55.0% resist - Active T2 hardener, uses 20GJ per cycle 30 tf CPU - 55.0% resist - Active Caldari Navy hardener, uses 20GJ per cycle 30 tf CPU - 37.5% resist - Passive T2 hardener, uses no cap 36 tf CPU - 45.1% resist - Pithum A-Type passive hardener, uses no cap
I'm not at home so I can't check, but the 20% extra resist that you get from the shield compensation skills at IV brings the passive resistances very close to the active resistance values - for no cap. Especially with AB or MWD, shield booster, TP and Inv Field that all use cap there's scenarios where you'd like to be as close to cap stable as possible.
Personally I never use active resists on my Tengu.

Yes, but as the above poster said it has its advantages.
Examples with the compensation skills at V 30 tf CPU - 46.9% resist (37.5% + compensation bonus) - Passive T2 hardener, uses no cap 44 tf CPU - 55.0% resist - Active T2 active hardener, uses 20GJ per cycle 30 tf CPU - 55.0% resist - Active Caldari Navy active hardener, uses 20GJ per cycle 36 tf CPU - 56.4% resist (45.1% + compensation bonus) - Pithum A-Type passive hardener, uses no cap 39 tf CPU - 61.8% resist - Pith A-Type active hardener, uses 20GJ per cycle
The 25% extra resist that you get from the shield compensation skills at V brings the passive resistances very close to the active resistance values - for no cap. Especially with AB or MWD, shield booster, TP and Inv Field that all use cap there's scenarios where you'd like to be as close to cap stable as possible.
Deadspace/officer active hardeners are the best, but they cost a lot (more than your Tengu). Personally I hardly ever use active resists on my Tengu.
- That said the compensation skills aren't really "Essential Shield Skills" but they give you some more freedom and versatility. I'd train them to IV, they're just rank 2 skills after all.
Which is great if you know what you are tanking; until CCP bring out a passive module that grants shield resists to all damage type then these skill are going to be way down on my training list.
--- Fake Edit ---
I am tempted to get the EMP Compensation to V so I can plug that ugly resist hole on the tengu; you know the one, or maybe you didn't notice until somebody wanted to suicide gank you whilst your hardners were turned off.
