Currently I'm piloting a Sleipnir and I am trying to decide what set I should go for. My emphasis is on doing solo work, so blob avoidance is my number 1 concern. I'm fairly certain that more speed= more usefulness since it makes it easier to dictate fights/withdraw. Is there any reason I should use a crystal set instead? Ofcourse I could just get blobbed as a port through a gate.. so idk.

Station and gate games - crystal set will be better. Tank them long enough to jump through... Just make sure you keep an eye on local and deaggress when you see the blob.
In belts and planets, snake set will help you escape much better.
Determine where you fight, determine your implants.

Edited by: Tychus Grim on 09/03/2011 15:14:20 Yea gate camping/ station stuff really isn't my cup of tea. I like to roam around inside systems, exploring maybe killing some rats or someone else who might be ratting. I'm also gonna stick with snakes, so if I group up with w/ other people I can keep up with them.
Edit: Wrong toon, I hate these forums sometimes.

Before you go hairing off in a shiney t2 command ship that will most likely contain some pricy faction mods you might want to cut your teeth using a less expensive but similar ship. Solid dps with a good enough tank to outlast your opponents and if you have the full hg snake set in then you will be faster than pretty much everything past the angel cartel ships.

Does this fit require AWU 5? Mines is 4 atm, and why 425 over 220's? .. I really wasn't planning on using fancy dead space mods, for solo stuff. I would equip fance stuff if I'm part of a larger tactical group that wants to go out roaming. |

Nope. It should all fit just under the cpu and grid limits with awu 4 as long as the rest of your fitting skills are maxed. As far as the 425mm over the 220mm there isn't enough saved grid and cpu to improve the fit with better mods so I went with the higher alpha even though the tracking and dps are quite close. You can gimp the dps and squeeze in an xl booster but tbh you will then be overtanked for your intended prey and have to take longer to kill him off increasing the chance you getting blobbed by the backup if you can't disengage fast enough.

Actually a few choice faction or deadspace mods can significantly increase your solo survivability over just a t2 or best named fit but not turn your ship into a multi billion dollar space pinyata. But as the hull alone costs around 250 mil isk you can afford to stick a few sensible high meta mods on. This should put out 700~800 dps depending on your hardwires and cruise right at the 2000ms mark without overheat fo just over 6 minutes until you cap out. This is important as it saves you from having to use precious cap charges to keep your mwd burning as you kite your target outside of web range. For a bit more isk you can get a gistum b-type and improve your run time out to almost 12 minutes which can make all the difference if you get caught as you will still have a mostly full capacitor so you will have longer to tank and hopefully break tackle and gtfo. Feel free to replace a te with a nano but you really want to keep your dps as high as possible for when you wear down his tank and then try to get into your optimal for the overheated coup de grace and loot scoop.

First off, I don't fly a sleipnir.
However, from what I have seen/ heard you might consider crystals over snakes. Watch Free flight 4 to get a good idea of a successful style. Also, large booster makes more sense if ur gonna be kiting IMO.

Then gtfo of this thread.

Gah, crystals made sense for pvp before the nano nerf and multiple hp buffs but with the generic speed balance we have now snakes are far far better for the solo pvper than crystals because you can expect to outrun 95% of the ships you run across. And if you can't outrun them you can outright melt tacklers with your near frigate gun tracking if they chase you trying to get the point for the gang.
Sleip is one of those underrated solo pvp ships because the tards think solo pvp is dead.

Ok you make a valid point.
However, would your answer change if you threw a boosting loki into the mix?
It seems to me the speed and point range bonuses would somewhat nullify the need for snakes and make crystals more attractive.

also I'd go with crystals, once you get caught, you'll be glad you did 1200-1400 ish tank w/ dg xl booster what what. Guns don't kill people. onowait. |

I'd say the exact opposite is true tbh. It's the same principle as not fitting different ranged guns to your ship; you want to fit to be good at one thing, not bad at a whole bunch (though in this case it would be really good at one thing rather than good at a bunch). If you want to rely on speed to deal with incoming damage, rely on speed, and focus on it. Otherwise just focus on getting your shield tank as high as possible.
Oh and the bonus to point range is kind of useless most of the time. You're not going to be doing any damage past 24km anyway, so fitting to sit out past that range is pointless. |

The 10%/level falloff bonus says you're dumb and/or have never flown a speed-fit sleip. With the standard 2 gyro/2 TE/damage control lows, your DPS is fine out to 30 km. Signature removed. |
