It's a shame that u charge 20 bucks for viewing the HD Fanfest-Stream!
If you want to give player the chance of requiering cash-shop items before Incarana is released, do not bind it to a Stream-Feed!

Since I rarely have time to watch live stuff, the utility of this is somewhat questionable.
However, if you would sweeten the deal with QUALITY downloadable copies of everything when Fanfest is over (or in the middle, or whatever - just not three months later), I'd be happy to shell over even a couple PLEXes for that. I'm not going to bother setting up a stream-ripping rig just for this. Yes, a stream dump will be enough if it doesn't have dropped frames.
Yes, I know you're going to upload it to youtube later on. Youtube, well, kinda sucks.

Hey everyone, obviously there are a lot of questions floating around which IÆm more than happy to answer. First IÆd just like to say that IÆve been involved with EVE Tv for many years now and the team that makes it happen and I still consider this a show "by the players for the players".
Fanfest differs significantly from the Alliance Tournament, the equipment needs and man power are on a completely different scale and requires a much larger budget to pull off. In previous years weÆve mostly recorded Fanfest and not gone live at all, in 2009 for the first time in a few years we went live for a few hours on the Saturday afternoon.
This year we really wanted to go all the way and bring you an awesome broadcast. WeÆve invested in more equipment (which will also benefit the Alliance Tournament) and hired a huge professional team for the event. Simply put this costs money to do and the sale of the HD stream is primarily to make this possible.
As someone has mentioned in this thread already, a certain company that rhymes with Lizzard charges $40 for the stream of their convention. While if you use a PLEX you can view our stream for purely in-game currency.
We intend to bring you an awesome show and we really hope you enjoy it if itÆs in SD or HD. Either way itÆs you the viewers that make EVE TV what it is and shows CCP how much value it has to the community, so your support is very important to us.
Originally by: Jupix Don't you think 20 euros is a bit steep for just a higher res version of a free broadcast?
I think the price is fair in my opinion. The 20 Euros is purposely a little higher than the cost of a PLEX so if youÆre an active subscriber I would recommend going the PLEX route, and while the free stream will be fine to watch and listen to for a while if you intend to settle in for a marathon session on the Saturday I would definitely recommend the HD stream.
I also want to point out here that people are paying thousands on flights, hotels and tickets to come to Fanfest in person, so this is a small cost with that in mind to get a part of the Fanfest experience.
Originally by: Jupix Especially since there's no guarantee it's going to be up, or good quality (as in sound mixing)..
All I can say is weÆre aiming for this to have a very high production standard. WeÆll have a dedicated team of around 15 people working on EVE TV to make this as good as possible. Anyone who watched the last Alliance Tournament in HD that is essentially the quality of the stream youÆll be getting. Our last feed went very well and we hope to improve on that even further. That said we cannot guarantee the quality of the internet during the event or your own connection.
Originally by: Jupix Will there be recorded HD vids of the panels afterwards? Might pay 99 eurocents a piece on iTunes for those...
All the presentations will be available on our YouTube channel within a week of Fanfest in HD, this includes all the presentations that didnÆt make it into the live show.
Originally by: godly gringo why are you not showing Thursday of fanfast on the stream
The Thursday is traditionally the meet and greet day of Fanfest so the live show content would be a bit light. WeÆll be recording everything on all days and a few select presentations from Thursday will be broadcast on the Friday and Saturday.
Originally by: Mrs Snowman Will you also be uploading videos onto Youtube? Only im in the middle of moving homes and have no internet connection at all :(
All the presentations will be on YouTube within a week of Fanfest. As others have asked this we currently have no plans to offer direct downloads of the presentations.

If you even think of charging for the alliance tournament HD stream though .. Don't go that path.

Don't worry, a micro transaction will show up in some form for the AT. It may not be paying for HD but they will sneak one in there.

Loxy:
1. For 20Ç stream of content that's going to be free afterwards, it needs to be MUCH BETTER THAN AT HD broadcast. I have 20mb/s connection and many people have much better pipes at their homes. We really expect Blu-Ray quality streaming here. A 'Youtube-level' 2mbit stream with poor encoding (h264 basic profile, wtf?!) will NOT cut it. For 20Ç, I expect epicness.
You will need separate ULTRA-HD option. I'm thinking 1920p, with least 10-15mb/s bandwidth on decent codec. It will create a lot of extra publicity and since you will have stanrard HD stream as well, it doesn't matter if only part of populace will be able to see it.
2. Youtube HD sucks for content with text, presentations, etc (it's only 2mbit, so there will be horrible blocking artifacts). Waiting a whole week to see content you paid for sucks EVEN MORE. Please provide high quality downloads for people who paid immediately after broadcast. It's not hard. It can be done by one person and you have 15 guys on project. Having to wait a whole week is just offending.
3. Lastly, provide option to buy the stream without stupid ingame shirt. I find idea of paid hi quality streaming to be great, but I will not pay for it if it will be used to validate some dev dumb claims about vanity item micro transactions. If you want to gauge true interest in vanity items, the only fair way is to provide two options - with and without t-shirts. The other one can be cheaper, or just give small amount of money to charity.

yes and there are people how make millions of dollars a year. (if you would have to pay to view a connvention from home, would you consider to go to fanfest instead? or migth it bring more people to fanfest in person if the stream would be for free?)
I doubt that the stream (sd or hd) will be able to bring the feeling of fanfest to our homes (isn't it a "small" difference to attend to a rockconcert, beeing in the crouwd poging or sitting at home an watching it on TV?)

It's an example of having to charge for such a service, this is not a cheap thing to do and if we want to do it we have to charge for it. I hope you can see the differences in price show we're not in this to make money.

It's the viewer numbers and interaction that let us go to management and say lets do x and players will love it. This Fanfest we're trying to up the production level and bring you the event live, if there isn't interest in it then we might not be able to do it next year.

I'm not exactly sure what the question here is but again to bring you this service we have to charge for it. The other option is we don't do a live show at all and we put the footage on YouTube later which we're doing anyway.
So either way it's the same thing, if you can't make it to Fanfest but you do want to watch the stream then there is now an option for you. If your happy with watching the recordings on YouTube then we'll have those up as soon as we can after the event.

We expect much lower viewer numbers of this in HD compared to the last tournament so we're very confident on our side. In order for me to buy into this, I'd need to see some kind of declaration from Level 3 or CCP that the videos will be available afterwards at the fanfest website or somesuch. Watching it live is just not workable.
The T-shirt is cute, but not worth it.

Making this available for PLEX is a great idea. I will consider buying it once I figure out if I will have the time to actually watch the stream as it happens.
That's my biggest issue with a live broadcast - I can't decide myself when to watch it, and I have a busy RL life going on. But then I guess there's youtube...

Loxy, you've answered many questions but ignored perhaps the most important of all:
Is "HD" going to be 720p or 1080p?
This will be the deciding factor for me as to whether to buy in or not, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard.

Also everyone saying "Wah, CCP is trying to make more money!" ... YES THEY ARE, THEY ARE A BUSINESS! They were nice enough to throw a free exclusive in-game item for the purchase of the HD stream. You aren't paying for the shirt, you are paying for the stream with extra incentive. Thank you CCP for being a company that knows how to not go belly up so I can keep flying my internet spaceships. I still think 20 bucks is insane for an ephemeral product like a live broadcast. If you have to ask for that much to make it feasible, you went overboard with the scale of it. Ofc you don't know yet how popular your hd pay tv will actually be, but that's again a reason to start smaller. Consider that even pro 1080p cameras have an effective detail resolve way below 1000 lines. So downrezing the 1080p output in the postpro chain is fine. Unless, of course, the tv staff will be running around with digital cinema cameras like Red and Alexa, which is highly unlikely... ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |
