Originally by: Jennifer Starling I used the matching tool (great work Dierdra Vaal!!!) and the best candidate had 67% agreement - but also a few things I really disagree with. Too bad we can't just vote for the ideas and let them sort out who can best represent those. This way the CSM still doesn't really represent what their voters actually want.
Let's see... using that... * best match
The poll questions were so biased and convulted way that I couldn't be confident at all with any answers . "things like priorty over all other actions" should have been answered disagree even if you were infavor of investing more resources in those issues than many others.
The BPO question was phrased in similar black and white ways that suggested an immdiate confiscation of assets worth 10's of billions of ISK, without giving any middle ground to ways that CCP could get rid of them by gradually making stealth buys on the market, or using an emminent domain like purchase based upon rules of thumb and input by a panel of player experts prior to commitment to the program. I'm not arguing that eithe or those would necesarly be good, but but the question sort of forced people to say that they supported things the way they were or imply they didn't know uch about the subeject.

That would be completely inappropriate right seeing how I'm still recovering from surgery so I'm not exactly in shape for any longer travel whatsoever (and won't be for another few months). Still, even if the surgery was not an issue, I probably would have not ran anyway, because to do a proper job would require quite a bit of time invested into it, time which I can't exactly feel comfortable in sparing right now (I barely even log into EVE to change skills, answer evemails and update market orders to begin with nowadays, the vast majority of my "EVE time" is spent foruming, and even that took a dive lately). _

of course it doesn't. democracy is a tool. any tool is only as good as the user. and democracy is best tool around, as it gives people exactly what they deserve. and no people in any circumstance should get better than they deserve. so if you want more from democracy, fix people. and yes, it can be done. and yes, it's hard as hell.
but at the end of the day, it's only effort worth making. considering how much effort you put into educating people on this forum, i would have expected more faith from you. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

That's just it - I know just how hard it is even with people that want help, let alone those who resist it, or hell, those who furiously cling to their views and spew their wrong take on the subject violently upon others too. So you bet my faith in humanity is quite low. Also, I live in Romania. If you would live in Romania too, you'd probably know what I mean. But let's not get into RL politics and economics _

I voted for Serious Internet Politician. I don't like micro-transactions and its the largest issue to me. So large in fact that even if he was opposed to me in all my other beliefs save that one I still would have voted for him.
I enjoyed several games that added micro-transactions and after that they just start trying to nickel and dime you do death. Expansions slow down or stop as they focus on more ways to bleed you dry. It also a huge conflict of interest. It gives them a incentive to make the game harder for us, if they can make a profit from it.

I didn't vote and I prob never will. The CSM has been and always will be a PR stunt by CCP, which now its become no more then a popularity contest and a free trip to Iceland. Once CCP actually starts taking the CSM seriously or creates a system that actually shows that the CSM is accomplishing anything. Other then voicing opinions on changes that CCP will probably disregard anyways.

Well having followed the candidates I think the CSM role is potentially the best condition it could be when the results are announced. Some very high quality candidates with some excellent ideas.
Having made my decision I voted for Seleene. Research indicated that he has the widest experience base, both in and out of game. he has been a front line commander, a stable and successful CEO and also an alliance executor of some repute. Some may argue that todays newspapers are tomorrows chip wrappers, but such accomplishment over a sustained period? The quite period in his EvE career coincides with his time at CCP I assume.
However I did not cast my vote on history. I contacted Seleene and challenged his mandate. He was calm, reasoned and very articulate. He explained himself well and would not allow me to draw him on personal preference but was resolute on the strategic aims of the discussion topics. He was refelective on questions and considered the many facets of the opinions he would represent if elected. He was empathetic to the needs of capsuleers but not one to to be railroaded by the most vocal. I was left with the impression that our views are respected as equal and not in accordance with the infamy achieved as a character. He has a solid network of contacts to explore for a rounded opinion and using his natural diplomatic skills has the ability, desire and will to effect that changes we seek to keep EvE the elite embodiment is has been for so many years.
In short he has the personal integrity, will and ability to trully represent the views and opinions of each of us with OUR best interests at heart with no personal agenda. I have endorsed Seleene because I have had the opportunity to find some of this out at a personal level and it is unreasonable to expect all of you or him to do that.
Vote Seleene, you know it makes sense !!

Yeah, you've hit on why I ultimately decided not to promote the Vote Match tool on my blog. It was and is a great idea in theory, but the questions really should have been more clear cut and less loaded.
They were great interview questions, but poor poll questions. As a result, it didn't surprise me to learn that most people didn't get more than a 60-65% match with any candidate, and then got a 60-65% match with a lot of them.
Looking over my own answers and how other candidates answered, I realized I could have selected the exact opposite position on many of the questions and not have to change a single word on the comments I posted.
For anyone who matched with me at 60% or more, if you're thinking about voting for me but an issue or two is making you hesitate, send me an EVEmail or post in my Jita Park thread with your concerns and I'll be happy to talk with you about them.
I want to commend Diedra Vaal on what was a great, great idea. But the execution was ultimately flawed. Hopefully, the tool will be a little cleaner next year. -- Ripard Teg Jester's Trek, wherein I ramble about EVE and my run for CSM6.

I agree 100% that the questions hit on the most important issues and hearing the thoughts about how to approach those issues in something like an interview would have really giving us a good feeling about both what candidates felt....
......but even more importantly how potential delegates expressed their answers would have given us a sense that they understood those aspects of the game and the potential for unintended consequences that often completely undermine things that seem like a good goal on the surface.
Whether or not you want a goon to represent you, I think that some key comments The Mitani made in announcing his candidacy really hit at the issue of what the CSMs most important influence is.
More or less(my interpretation not his words), he said that actual CSM proposals are very unlikely to go anywhere and probably at best plant a seed for change developers eventual adopt . He did feel however that CCP very definitely uses the CSM as a sounding board to get player approval/feedback on CCPs own ideas, and CSM members who have a deep understanding of how things really go down in the game can see problems coming miles away and have developers do a rethink before a bad idea gets too much momentum an developer ôownershipö to see the light about different ways of implementing a change.
Hopefully people will vote for both people who share their concerns but also a real feel for how players will game a change and have a feel for what theyÆve seen that turns off players. (not to say there are people at CCP that canÆt do the same but the nature of corporate institutional process can often have even the best run companies in any field buying in on an idea in a way that expert in their field within the company lose all perspective )
Like I said in another post, I agree that Dierdra deserves props for the effort and the care she has for the game to make the effort. There are ways to vastly improve the wording of questions(even if any question will carry some bias with its wording) and taking the time to read a few hundred pages and white papers on the basics of that sort of thing would really be helpful (shouldnÆt take more than 10 hours reading.. not too much longer than what could be done during a couple pos bashes or semi-afk lvl 4 missions!)

Edited by: CCP Manifest on 12/03/2011 22:41:07 I really wish I could reveal who I voted for with my paid accounts in order to influence the elections, in whatever amount that may be, towards my own playstyle/philosophy.
BUT, sadly, I cannot. For very good reason.
I will say that this election was really rough on me as an educated voter. As trite and pithy as it sounds, all of the candidates have been doing (and continue to) an amazing job in terms of making it clear where they stand through sincere and candid dialogue, thinking about the CSM issues thoughtfully and slugging it out politically when they disagree. Sure, a lot of that is due to the work of the previous CSM incarnations, but also a significant portion of it is due to the personality and skills of the current candidates.
I really hope EVE players have been trying to figure out first-and-foremost where they stand as players, and then trying to figure out how the candidates might match up with them.
