Very pretty graphics. It looks like a conventional FPS rather than the traditional Mechwarrior games. I hope it is better than Armoured Core for the PS3 which is just an arcade game.

Having played S.L.A.I (PS2) and it's original, Phantom Crash (Xbox) I feel qualified to say that looked at least a small bit inspired by these games, though I could be wrong. I just got the same feeling from that trailer as I do from the opening cinematic of these games. The mech bodies also seem to share similarities in shape. Though to be fair, every mech game these days usually works off the Body-Legs-Shoulders-Arms setup short of Armoured Core. Armoured Core for answer FTW. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Edited by: Selinate on 12/03/2011 02:41:37 can't say it's more amazing than dust, since we barely have any info on dust to begin with. Environment looks nice, even if the mechs look ugly as sin to me (just in the artwork sense, not the graphical detail).
I think I'd rather just wait for Armored Core 5, personally. Loved AC 4 and the spaces in that game in the video look very.... tight. Not exactly what I would consider a good battleground for these types of somewhat fast-moving mechs, since these types of games are incredibly dependent on the environment and how it's used effectively.
Just my 2 cents, though.

That is the problem isn't it? Aside from having so little on Dust to go on that at this point it just seems to make even less sense (limited to consoles only?) than that social experiment Incarna.
Personally I prefer the bulky mechs rather than the "weird" kind from the land in the East.
I don't mean to sound harsh here, but the open landscapes as those in the AC games serve as basically nothing more than huge arenas with waves after waves of enemies kinda hint at who is the target audience... I am opt-in for urban combat myself then.

Fair enough as for the art style you prefer. Personal taste is personal taste.
However, I'm not sure what you're talking about as far as open landscapes with waves after waves of enemies. AC 4 had multiplayer, and there were no waves. Also, most of the landscapes were fairly open, but they did have numerous features that could be used strategically to take down an enemy, if used correctly. For instance, if you have an enemy that is particularly fond of flying, and you find a way to force him under a giant building or block, then you give yourself the advantage you need.
Also, if you have an opponent that is particularly fond of sniping, then dashing from cover to cover too quickly for him to keep up before you pounce on his slow ass is another great way to use the environment strategically. It boils down to who uses the environment better, who builds the better AC, and the skill of the player involved.
Those cramped environments, imo, would only serve to cramp mobility for everyone, and hence not really serve to increase strategy or fun of gameplay.

What you are basically describing is a japanese twitch game with not so much individual skill (SF4 is a good example of skill) when it boils down to customizing your mech with the best available, which is just a handicap.
I am guessing Hawken will play like any modern FPS today but I would like to see some elements from BFBC2 that makes the multiplayer so good because the AC games seems to be more head-to-head and not large multiplayer battles. Which urban combat is just awesome for.

Ironically, the general gameplay (you point said videogame gun in a direction and press whatever button you have binded to 'fire') in pewpew-FPS games has always been shallow to begin with so I am not sure what you are trying to bring into the conversation.

The best available? Customizing your AC is more like customizing fittings on a ship in Eve. You can go different modules to change your strategy up, not a handicap. Individual skill comes into play heavily also. Try lining up a shot with the Kojima cannon, it's not easy by any means.

That DUST 514 looks like its trying to do more than run n gun type FPS, I thought my point was obvious given what I said and your thread title
Maybe DUST will turn out to be a shallow bore fest but I'm holding onto the hope CCP adds some layer of tactical depth. Its been said before they're aiming to create more of a RTS-FPS hybrid which'll tie into EvE online universe.
So yeah, far more amazing than said pewpew FPS's at least in concept. -----------------

Jump jets are kinda part of the Mechwarrior/Battletech thing :P
Being a HUGE Mechwarrior and Battletech fan, I like it. MW4 was awful, MW3 was the last one that was good, and well, unfortunately I can't run it anymore...I guess the way it was coded it just chokes on modern hardware. I tried some of the modded stuff, but none of that worked either :(
I do have a computer with an old, old, old ATI car that may run it, but don't know if I wanna fuss with that just for 1 old game.
The newest Mechwarrior seems to have stalled out, something with lawsuits from Harmony Gold and crap. Hope it gets off the ground, but this would be a welcome alternative if Harmony Gold doesn't get wind of it and starts some stupid crap over there as well. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring
