Couldn't be him, Ben Browder took his part and it kept going. He was good in Farscape but in Stargate he just didn't feel like "the leader" type, more like a replacement.

Could be any of those, Michael Shanks left for a season and the fans begged for him to come back.

Originally by: Henry Haphorn You know, in my opinion, no Sci-Fi movie could ever stand out more than the original Stargate film that featured Kurt Russell and James Spader. That film jump started a very awesome storyline that catapulted the subsequent TV series to success. Originally, the series was suppose to die off by the end of the 3rd season, but later lasted into the 5th season and then finally closed off several years ago with the 10th season. There was something about the TV series that captivated the audience and thus kept it going. Was it Richard Dean Anderson (McGyver FTW!)? The sexy and smart Amanda Tapping? The voice of reason that is Micheal Shanks? The beefed up, but gentle and honorable Christoper Judge? Or the tenacity of Don S. Davis?
But of course, I'm talking about a TV series here in a thread about movies. I can see the difference here. But I managed to find that the least known sci-fi films tend to become well established yeas later as their fanbase grows (case in point: Tron).
Good point.
As much as I disagreed with the film, as the premise was stupid* it certainly had very decent sci-fi legs the network was keen to run with, much to my approval.

The other plot line I hate is the one when we are seen as a menace to the galaxy, based on tech we've developed in the last few decades, compared to the rest of the universe who have had several millennia to iron out the rough spots in their moral barometers.
Oh, and the hilarious one is when an Alien comes to Earth to understand what Love is...by getting laid, and then leaves the girl, jumps back on board his spaceship and returns to his home system - systematically and unintentionally learning what it also means to be a guy!

Yeah, most are useless as Hollycrap doesn¦t know a good story even if it bit them in the a$$.
As far as flics go there¦s a precious few, bet you know them all anyway. Some of the Alien series, Blade Runner, Outland(with Connery), Westworld(a real oldie, but goodie), Logan¦s Run(dito).
Actually the IMDB Top 50 has some pretty good ones(not that many though). Dark City is another good one, not that well known.
As for TV, Babylon 5 was recently on reruns over here. Actually a good watch when you stomach through the boring 1st season and can overlook that nowadays your computer can generate better CGI on the fly than that show has.
If you didn¦t yet, go and see the NEW Battlestar Galactica. Start with the Miniseries/Pilot first. ______________ Mal-¦Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-`Big damn heroes, sir.` Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

Solaris - 1972 Russian original is an awesome scifi movie. Its in the 'lonely' scifi catagory which I really like. The ending knocked me for six like the ending of Planet Of The Apes did.
Children Of Men is a decent dystopian movie. It was set in London and us Brits like misery.
And for something different Batteries Not Included is a funny scifi story

Edited by: Vogue on 16/03/2011 10:07:03 I saw Skyline and really liked it. As a European I think we prefer films with more emphasis of the storyline and action around a small group rather than the spectacle of random displaced action. Like Cloverfield Skyline was like this. And the aliens were dark and sinister unlike the keystone cops aliens in Battlefield LA. There was some action scenes which threw the kitchen sink in as well. The storyline did go off beat sometimes but overall a decent scifi pop corn scifi movie.
If you like dark scifi\horror check out The Mist which has pitch perfect story line build up.

It's good if you know how to turn off your brain for about 2 hours. Enjoyable brain-less action.
Incidentally, I'd rate this much higher than war of the worlds, at least the director of LA knew when he didn't have decent actors available (sans Eckhart)

Originally by: Alotta Baggage Edited by: Alotta Baggage on 13/03/2011 09:20:50 Ok, the movie was pretty awesome... that being said I have a few little gripes, being former USMC infantry they really stood out:
1. No Marine has ever said "Hoorah!" 2. The ACOG reticle doesn't look like that. 3. The M249 SAW does not sound like the M240 4. Marines don't stand up against their platoon sgt while still in a hot area because their brother died under his command in another firefight. 5. The M203 doesn't leave a smoke trail... honestly don't know where they got that idea from. 6. The M136 AT4 doesn't leave a smoke trail. 7. The laser on the laser designator is not visible spectrum. 8. C4 isn't incendiary and is way more powerful than the movie demonstrated (4 or 5 bricks detonated on a bus there wouldn't be any recognizable bus left) 9. The fuse on the M67 fragmentation grenade is 5 seconds, not 3 (most of the time, but never 2x in a row) 10. No missile flies slow enough to see the details on the missile body while it flies by. 11. If Michelle Rodriguez was ever next to me in a firefight I'd move down the line
Other than those distracting flaws the movie was pretty epic
*Edit: Didn't like Harvey Dent as a Marine Staff Sgt. (his butt chin is distracting )
Think I'll just add to this.
Saw Marines together, some in Woodlands, some in Deserts, sleeves down in a parking lot, (not in the field, and the Marines are all about Uniformity) -Sidebar, also saw the Staff Sgt with rolled up sleeves, so now we have some Marines in Woodlands, and some in Deserts, sleeves down while not in the field, while at the same time having another Marine with his sleeves rolled up --Double sidebar, his sleeves were heinous.
Drinking alcohol in Boots and Uts, I'm pretty sure they would get their *******s ripped for doing that.
Thats all I got right now, you nailed the rest on the head.

I saw Event Horizon yesterday. It's an incoherent film. Sam Neil as the lead role is a weird choice - he plays it like a timid school teacher that goes to hell.
I saw Omega Man today. It is what I Am Legend is based on and better. A wacky film but it has a nice between the lines commentary that hippy counter culture is glib and superficial. What carries the film is Charlton Heston.

"Dark Star" was one of the funniest scifi movies ever made. It was funny as well as so bad it was funny.
The original "Alien" has a warm spot in my heart because I was about 8yo when I saw it and I snuck in to the theater and saw it alone. Pretty sure I didn't sleep for a week.
Battle:LA was blech. Too much wrong with it and it seemed to be trying too hard to check off every block in the "war movie checklist." From "we're not leaving anyone behind" [spoiler: they leave a few behind] to "wake up, daddy" [spoiler: he doesn't] to "give this letter to my wife."
Regarding the mixture of uniforms noted above, I know they were mixing branches in several scenes...Army, Marines and MRod as the "tough as nails" Air Force member.
Also, since this note has gone on too far already I'll just add this: skip "Adjstment Bureau." I know you don't want to, but...trust me.
