As always with the previous Plex for Good drives I will be collecting any donations anyone has spare over the month on behalf of Eve-Radio and at the end taking it all and buying Plex's to send to the cause. I will update as the time passes on how much the kind listeners of Eve-Radio have helped to donate.
Please donate if you can and help.
Thanks

As has been suggested before, how about taking all destroyed PLEX (which is free money for CCP) and donating the value of those too?
And might I add a suggestion that all plex confiscated from RMT'ers is also donated? |

A very fine effort. I support this with light and love. Although more earthquakes are coming as the "Ring Of Fire" is making a good full circle.

I'd say save the plex for a country that will need it more than Japan.
Its sad, but Japan has prepared for this probably more than anyone else, they can handle themselves.

Edited by: Winters Chill on 14/03/2011 20:00:50 Hmm,
Helping players donate PLEX is a nice idea, thank you CCP for the admin work you put into this.
However PLEX donation also seems to have unavoidable beneficial consequences for CCP financially and socially. While I'm sure this is unintended, I think it would be a nice gesture if CCP actually matched the players donations with something from their own coffers, or at least can we have more transparency on staffer/dev donations.
Otherwise, I think I'll just give money to the red cross, a legitimate registered charity.

Eh? How do CCP benefit from this? It costs them a small amount to process the transactions, the dev time, etc., but they don't pass that cost on to anyone nor do they get a tax break for it as far as I remember.

Please CCP I need an urgent reply off you.
As you might know I started an EvE charity fund in the thread:
"VahrokhÆs RL Emergencies Charity - Chribba holds stuff"
with the aim to gather ISK and PLEXes to forward to CCP exactly in these cases.
For accounting the transfer (I must be as transparent as possible in this activity) I need to know if you are going to send the money to Japan in one chunk at the end of your initiative or if you are going to send multiple batches.
Depending on your answer I will have to choose two different solutions to gather and account for everything in time. - Auditing & consulting

One check when the drive has ended. We calculate the total, purchase any ISK off the market if players opt to donate ISK rather than PLEX, and then provide the check to the Red Cross in the name of the EVE Online Community.

At the risk of appearing to minimize the Christchurch event:
New Zealand 165 dead (not 100) potentially 200 11 billion (not $37-70 million) in dmgs (8% of GDP)
Japan Potentially 10,000 dead (currently 2,800) Potentially $180 billion in dmgs (3.5% of GDP)
Fixed that with a few more accurate details.
Not to mention population of NZ 4m (GDP 126 Billion), population of Japan 127m (5.07 Trillion). So to scale, not too dissimilar.
At any rate, it would be nice, seeing as donations are going to the Red Cross, if we could chose which disaster to donate to. The Red Cross are active in pretty much all disaster areas. I'd like to donate to help out both events myself.

Nowhere near the same scale, but I do feel the need to correct you.

Quote:
At least 166 people have been confirmed dead as of 7 March 2011, with the final death toll expected to be over 200. Analysts estimated that the earthquake could cost insurers US$12 billion (NZ$16 billion).
That said, where do you draw the line for these PLEX drives? Do you go by number of fatalities per head of population? Percentage of GDP damage? In both, the NZ quake may exceed the Japan quake, although I doubt anyone will argue that the Japanese quake is the bigger catastrophe.
Doing these PLEX drives too often will lessen their impact significantly.
But anyway.
CCP PLEASE DONATE THE VALUE OF DESTROYED PLEXES TO THESE PLEX DRIVES! Back your words with actions. |

As someone with in-laws in Japan (my wife is Japanese, and I lived there for 6 years), I would like to thank CCP for taking this step.
While this is a massive blow, the Japanese people have hundreds of years of experience dealing with earthquakes and tsunami. When the earth began to shake, they were prepared, both individually (emergency kits) and as a society (building codes FTW). The result was that the loss of life, while great, was a tiny fraction of what it could have been.
In the aftermath, the Japanese, like good people everywhere in a tough spot, are pulling together to help their neighbors, in ways both great and small. People are opening their homes to give strangers a bed; many stores are opening their doors and locking their cash registers -- "just take what you need, but only what you need".
International aid is urgently needed in the immediate aftermath, to help get the basic infrastructure back online, but once that is done, I have absolutely no doubt that the Japanese will quietly get down to the business of cleaning up, and rebuilding stronger than ever before.
The Japanese deserve your help, I encourage you to give it, and you should know that they will remember it and pay it forward.
Sincerely, Trebor Daehdoow
(note: we have managed to contact all of my wife's relatives and they are all safe)

Thank you CCP: I live here just south of the Earthquake and Tsunami area.. the devastation is tremendous.. didnt see the link earlier as internet / phones are on and off due to the Grid rotation of power over here... my efforts are going to be hands on with cleanup/rescue operation with the japanese ground self defense force.. Many of the people here are needing basic items.. water, food, blankets, juice etc.. many friends have perished and the aftershocks continue even to this day.. for those that have donated thank you and god bless you.. many people dont understand how this not only affects the local people, but that worldwide.. Japan is strong, but they still need help..

Anyone else 'quitting' EVE? Why hang onto your pixels? Turn em into real blankets, food and water instead.

Quote: Power is out, and several nuclear plants are in severe crisis, with radioactive leaks being reported as radiation seeps from protective barriers never designed to withstand earthquakes of such magnitude.
Not trying to be funny, but what makes you think that they weren't designed to handle this? Japan is one of the most advanced nations on the planet, and they are well aware of the regions propensity for massive earthquakes. Given they happen about once every 20 years or so, it is ludicrous to think that a reactor with a lifespan of 40+ years was not designed with PRECISELY this kind of quake in mind.....

They were. But this has been reported to have been the largest quake in recorded Japanese history... and they have a lot of history.
When the quake hit, the emergency systems functioned and shut down the reactors. But after that happens, the residual heat of the core, and the heat generated by the decay of short-lived fission products, has to be bled off. Unfortunately, the power needed to run the cooling pumps -- both from other power stations and from emergency generators on-site -- failed. This is about the worst-case scenario for a water-cooled reactor.
Despite all this, and the release of radioactive steam (a by-product of trying to cool the cores), there is room for guarded optimism. The absolute worst case -- where they lose the ability to pump water into the cores, the core melts, the pressure vessel fails and the entire core drops into the cooling sump in a giant lump, generating a steam explosion that cracks the containment structure -- is not only very unlikely, but would be nothing like Chernobyl, where the entire core burned and literally went up in smoke.
