I have looked up quitting agents online and all the stuff I've seen about quitting agents have a reference to a bug that says I will lose standings if I quit an agent without requesting/declining a mission first. Is this still true? I want to stop researching Gravimetric Physics and switch to Hydromagnetic Physics using the same agent but dont want to risk a standings hit.
Do I still have to request/decline to do this? or can I just stop research and begin anew without standings hit?
Also, just for curiosity sake, How much of a hit would I take if I do goof somehow and quit in the wrong order?

If you are unsure, and people reply in poem form to you, try it on the test server.

If you can spare the few minutes to do a currier mission then I would recommend requesting and completing a mission from the agent prior to cancelling your current research with them. Why? To grab the extra RP of course.
If you cancel your research without requesting and declining a mission you will not take a standing hit.
If you cancel your research and have an outstanding mission with the agent I do not know what will happen, but I don't think you will get a standing penalty.
Make sure to cash in all your current RP's BEFORE you cancel the current research. As soon as you cancel you lose all RP's you have with that agent.

As I've had it happen to me, I don't risk it and always do the mission before canceling research with the agent.
If you get a pop-up box warning even though you were not offered a mission, do NOT ignore it.

I do not know the status of the bug but I too n=know it existed. Often times I do the following if I do not have time or resources to run the missions.
Ask the agent for a mission and then decline it. Then cash in your RP and cancel the research. This will keep you from getting that annoying message and has never resulted in a standings loss for me.
