Today, me and my best friend Evemon was calculating the price of making a hyperion. With the current jita prices and no skills it would cost me 40mil more to make a hyperion than to buy one.
Is this because the BP you use in Evemon has ME 0 and no material efficiency skills? OR are there other factors that count for those 40mils?
Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

You are on the right track. Don't try to be competetative and produce something big like a BS without a researched BPO/BPC and insufficient Production Efficiency Skill. And by insufficient I mean at least Level V
That would be like me doodeling a car and build it on my own.

No ProdEff and ME:0 blueprint -> 35% of minimum material cost extra as waste L4 ProdEff and ME:0 blueprint -> 15% of minimum material cost extra as waste L5 ProdEff and ME:1 blueprint -> 5% of minimum material cost extra as waste L5 ProdEff and ME:9 blueprint -> 1% of minimum material cost extra as waste
For something that sells for around 100 mil ISK, the first scenario easily means roughly 35 mil ISK was wasted due to lack of skills and blueprint research. _

Hmm, so battleships are out of reach at the moment then. Currently I'm making kestrels, a hundred of them. My net profit not counting with brokers fee will be 2 mil, bought materials for approx 28 mil. That is, if I manage to sell them all at max price.
What should a industry noon like me produce? I want to make big stuff so I get to use my Charon :)

you are working in right direction.. the old adage walk before you run, if you try to run you'll fall over
But depending on your financial situation buy the bigger bpo's from market (or contracts if they are suitably) cheep and start researching their me/pe levels to a suitable level
bpo calc<use this to calculate suitable levels (and by that i mean levels that dont take many many months of research to save 1/2k isk...)
then as you sell your smaller ships it will gradually build up your isk reserve then finally once bpo' has been researched bang your on the next level of manufacturing
obviously your toon will be trainingthe relevant industry skills to reduce cost, but also it is worth noting (as akita said) that sales tax can take a few more % of your profit (a point that is often forgotton by some people)So create an alt with decent basic trade skills (4/6 weeks training) so you can sell from that accoutn and save a few more isk on transaction costs... every isk counts in the market today.

Thanks, I'll be remapping soon and begin some serious industry training.
Also, if I cancel my manufacturing job, will I get everything that was not used back? Lets say I'm making kestrels and cancel the job halfway through, will I get half the worth of all the materials I put in?

I believe you will lose all the materials, but your blueprint will be returned. (Note: I've never done this so I am not speaking from experience)

nope.
non-permanent materials (ie BPO) are lost, and the slot is tied up until it finishes.
throw in a 30d project and cancel it 15 days in... you're still down one of your 10 (or 11) available jobs.

You have proof to back up these changes?
If you cancel a job, you lose all materials. The BPO will be returned. If it's a BPC, it will lose the number of runs the job was for. Your production slot will be freed up (it no longer counts against your total number of jobs).
However, no matter where the job is at (station or POS) The slot will still remain in use until the job would have finished.

You get back the BPO, you lose all the materials, and the manufacture slot remains tied up until the time the job would have become deliverable. Basically, the only reason to ever cancel a job is if you URGENTLY need the BPO and you can (financially) justify trashing the entire production run to get it back earlier.

Manufacturing is profitable if you make the right stuff, ship market, everyone wants to build ships and so the market sucks. Though that is all situational. Just shop around and find the nich.
