Certificates are received for completing a group of related skills. They can be made public to show what your character is proficient in, and they can be used as the basis to plan your future skill development.
Or you can completely ignore them. Cheers |

Certificates are guidelines to what to train. Some certificates are quite good to keep an eye on, others less so. Each certificate mentions what it helps with, and ships may list what certificates would be nice (but not required) to have if you want to fly the ship.
So certificates can be nice if you like a guideline, but you won't miss anything or achieve less if you never look at them.

Certificates are basically skills that all relate to each other and improve a certain thing such as armor tanking and drones. When you train all the skills to meet a certificate requirement you can get the certificate. It doesn't do anything, I guess you could use them for bragging rights but that is about it.
They are useful as guidelines. Lets say you want to work on your laser skills for instance. You look at the certificates involving lasers and you try to get those.

CCP games found that the majority of players stop playing the game after 2 month. They deviced many rather useless measures to counter that problem. One of them are certificates.

They're a way to do some skill planning in the game and teach newbies about what skills are good for what purpose / career path.
They also double as sort of achievements in that you can display your "Hull Tanking: Elite" for all to see and then you'll have camps of pirates scattering in all directions the moment you show up in local.

Aloha compadre!
Certificates are the feathers in your cowboy hat, pardner, and you can choose to puff them up while out on the field or put them in that treasure chest of yours. Nothing to it, if you know what I mean.

Whenever I I'm not sure what to train I work towards the "core competency" certificates, I assume it's useful.
So the "feathers" can be used as a crutch for fresh players.

They're useful when you follow the links from ship info... sometimes they'll clue you in to skills you had no idea existed and their prerequisites.
Other than that, they don't really do anything. It's designed to make people that can't understand an RPG with no classes or levels feel better about themselves. ---

Non cynical answer: they're pretty handy to map out some of the basics and to get a handle on all of the varied skills in the game. I've used it to plan out skills to train when I don't have a specific goal in mind at the moment.

Look at the recommended certificates for the ship you are piloting or want to pilot.
Certificates give you a path to follow when you are completely lost.

At first - i would follow the certificate planner to help me figure out what would be the best certificates for what career i intended on doing. it helped me because while planning to do something, I found skills i had absolutely no idea existed, and trained them up for that little bit extra helpful percentage. Eventually, you get used to what you will need and what you dont really need, so when you train a bunch of skills, you will get a new certificate. then when you have a look, you notice that you may only need 1 extra skillbook or level to get a higher/related cert and then that can help you too. I Find it helpful in planning for your career move.

I'm sure quite a few 50m+ SP characters have had a bit of an oh shi.. moment once they looked at certificates and realised they had forgotten to inject some obvious support skill.

Summing it up: Certificates have zero influence on game mechanics or attributes. They are just a guide and something that can be displayed. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |
