Awesome... I had no idea you guys where supporting video cards that are 8+ years old. Don't worry, these people already knew they needed an upgrade long before this.

Holy hell... I was able to get a modern low end graphics card for $25 a year ago that runs eve just fine, and and that is brand new from newegg... It is a Radeon HD4350, 512Mb. I am sure you can get better now for a similar price.
Like this Radeon HD 5450 at newegg...

I run labtops and or notbooks because I am mobile and you can't just replace your video card when you need to. That would be nice but you can't do that. I Love playing EVE and I have three accounts with them but this is geting nuts and very very costly. I am begining to wonder what is the point. I know haveing better visual affects are great and I love'm just as much as the next guy (or gal) but dam. I don't have 2g to put ino labtop every year just to have the better grafics every time they upgrade them. Anyway have funny and injoy see you all later (when ever that is going to be) Also some of you think that if you bought a comp just a few years or just recently that it should have shader3 not so true. Mine is less then a year old and it has an intel 3150 grafics and doesn't support sm3. Also mine isn't from my company I have to buy them so yes I have to be carful on how much I spend. I'm not rich and wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth (if you know what I mean.) So this isn't a whinning blog it's just the truth and money doesn't grow on trees. Some of us have to work our ass off just to get what we have (and are thankfull for it) but it makes it very difficult at times
I don't have $700 to put into a laptop every 3-4 years just to play modern games on a laptop...
I fixed that for you,
-------------
seriously tho... what do laptop buyers think they are getting when they buy a laptop? In the future, maybe these people will pay attention to what they are buying. Laptops are not great gaming platforms, and they where never meant to be. However there are plenty of laptops that are out with good gaming cards built in for quite a bit less than $1000, And they didn't just pop up this year...

But Intel 3150 does support SM3...?
According to this, yes it does.

It's not HP's fault, it's Intel stuffing the old gfx core into their Atom chip. Even the newer 4xx and 5xx series run with GMA3150 which as previously above is only partially capable of SM3 and hence will not either work in future. That means that about 99% of netbooks currently on market are in near future incapable of running Eve even if they otherwise meet the minimum requirements.
For others previous posters who say that "buy a newer laptop" , I don't want to buy a fething 'drag-around' , what I need when I go mobile is something small enough and light enough to carry around so I can login, change skill queue and chat with corpies / friends, maybe do a trip thru highsec in a shuttle or something if there's no war.
Now what CCP is doing is killing this, they're claiming this in the name of "legacy support" but what it really is, is that they're just too damn lazy to make the necessary optimisations to codepaths to support sm2 with sm3 path. I guess that in less than 2 years or so there'll be a blog: "Discontinuing support for SM3.0, SM4.0 minimum requirement."
You openly admit that intel's crappy chips are the cause of most of the fuss, and then go on to call out ccp for creating this problem thru laziness. Why wont you people think of the increased programming time that can now be devoted to bug fixes, or other features?
Yes, I did it, I said "you people"...

I just heard on the fanfest stream that all eve players will be getting an invite for the discount... probably in your email inbox. I was going to upgrade with an ATI, but if their discount is good enough, I might go with Nvidia, if for no other reason than to have that built in phys-X that is going to be used with incarna characters... Withi that I could probably put off my processor upgrade even longer...
Funny how the discounts will be going out around the same time that everyone in the US will be getting back their tax return money

Originally by: Miranio I've just received today the rebate for EVGA graphic card compatible with SM3. The idea is pretty cool, but they are all PCI-E ... my motherboard is AGP, so then I'll need a new motherboard, that mean, new RAM and a new CPU... Upgrading the graphic card is not the only thing here, If I support only SM2 it's because that I have to change my whole computer to get SM3 ( and being a computer nearly 10 years old, I won't put another 150$ on it for a new graphic card AGP that support SM3 it's just crazy to put money on an old rig like that )
The fact I found crazy is that my rig is still able to run EVE with graphic to maximum at 30fps, so I don't feel the need to upgrade anything, the game is fully playable.
Where did you get the rebate? My inbox is still empty.

What a joke. I just got the "discount code." A whopping 10%.
It brings EVGA brand video cards bought direct from EVGA to similar prices as EVGA and other brand NVidia cards when purchased from other online vendors.
Maybe, I shouldn't complain as this issue doesn't impact my main system directly. But I'm just bothered that this special deal is the equivalent of a FU to anyone who bothers to check the lowest hardware price anywhere else.
Kudos to whatever EVGA marketing person talked CCP into this direct marketing campaign, but for the actual players impacted by this, it's a joke.
For those that were using small portable laptops/netbooks that can't handle this anymore: checkout the Dell/Alienware Mx11. http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-m11x/fs it packs a good gaming punch in a small package for only $599.
For others with specific vid card issues for desktops... I recommend just asking your corp alliance mates for help. They can give you the attention your issue needs.
Agreed. EVGA's cards are overpriced. This discount doesnt even bring the price down to a competative level with the equivalent card from other brands. I am still getting a new card tho. Factory OC'd MSI GTX 460 for $150 before rebate compared to the EVGA for about $165 after this awesome "discount"... And the MSI card has a much better heatsink...

Originally by: Eve Midnight Awesome, just got my discount code in the email you guys sent out. Not sure which card to go for, please advise:
EVGA GeForce GTX 460 SE
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti FPB
Main diferences I see is: 1) Memory: 1024 MB, 256 bit vs 1024 MB, 192 bit GDDR5 2) Cores: 288 Processing Cores vs 192 CUDA Cores
Go with the 1 gig GTX 460 SE, or a 768mb GTX 460. They are both better than the 550 Ti for the same price. There are some differences between the GTX 460 and its SE version, but you cant go wrong either way. Its a trade off... a little bit more horse power, or a little bit more ram.

@Major Krieger: Amen...
The complaints are from people who play a constantly evolving computer game to relax, and simultaneously make no effort to stay current with the technology that enables that same computer game to function.
