of ship to fly, which one would it be?
I'm new to eve (5-6 months) and i'm starting to grasp just how long of a process getting in will be to develop my ships skills into a "self-sufficent pvp'er" (reading this a lot on corporation advertisements).
I realise i'm going to need to cross train at some point to cover all my bases, but right now I need a plan for this year and it looks like all I can realistically cram in will be one race worth of ship, weapons, and the remaining core skills I need. So the question remains, what race to choose first?

When they say 'self-sufficient', they mean that you can buy your own ships and don't whine about losses. So get your market trading/industry alt set up to make money, or have the time to rat/mission for your ISK.
Nothing worse than a permanently penniless pvper who can't fight due to lack of ships to pvp in.

Minmatar gives you the biggest range of pvp capable ships, to start I'd focus on shield, turrets and drones mostly, leave armour behind a bit and forget about missiles for a while.

I would choose caladri or gallente and train hybrid turrets.
My reasoning? They simply god-awful right now and given the number of years they have been in that shape they're bound to be over-buffed (much like projectiles were a while back) sometime this year or the next.
If you wanna be the best you gotta be ahead of the fotm curve.

I trained caldari and i'm not sure I can reccomend that rout to any fellow newbies. I got so bored with my drake that I actually quit the game a while.
I'm perfectly self-sufficient between lvl 3 missions, exploring, and trading, but i've got no plan to continue training caldari ships.

Thanks for the quick feedback. From the sound of things here and in the other forums minmatar is the clear choice. Time to put that skill plan together.

I can sympathise with the drake being a boring ship and all, but caldari have plenty going for them at the moment (most noteworthy ship being the tengu, which is completely insane). I'd think twice before cross-training away from arguable the best bc in the game which is also a mere stone's throw from the best t3 (same weapon system and all that).
Food for thought. I too started with one race, hated it, and then got fully trained in another race's weapon system before I realized that I kinda wished I had specialized. Truth be told, it's not really picking the 'best' so much as not picking the worst that matters. Pretty much anything that isn't a railgun/blaster boat is a good target.

I'm new to Eve as well, less than a month. Well I chose Caldari to start mainly because of their background. The other backgrounds are a bit tired from other mmo's; religious-amarr, democracy-gallente, and freed slaves-minmatar. Caldari is actually somewhat fresh aside from being very close to IRL. IRL would be a cross between Gallente and Caldari, except Gallente would only be a falsehood presented to the masses. Anyway, without diverging too much, Caldari has a good backstory with solid mission running ships to build ISK in the beginning then the plan is to switch to some pvp and crosstraining building on existing skills. |

Advantages of creating a PVP-only character:
- Anonymity. War targets and people you **** off via your PVP won't know about your PVE character, so you can log it in and make money / take a break from the war whenever you feel like it.
- Lower death costs because your clone has fewer points as it's specialized for just the PVP skills.
Advantages of your "PVE then switch to PVP" plan:
- You don't have to re-train all the support skills cause you already have them.
- You don't have to log off your main and log on an alt whenever you need to do the odd hauling or support job.
- All your items are belong to you already, so you don't have to worry about contracts to transfer gear between your characters.
- You're not paying for 2 accounts, just for one.

I fly gallente almost exclusively (despite being trained to fly minmatar and shoot projectiles) simply because I love the in-your-face style and the look of the ships.
People crap on gallente all day, everyday, and in every forum possible. Despite that, i've had lots of fun. To each his own, I guess.

I know, no game has ever made a faction with incessant Japanese cultural and aesthetic references, ever. It's definitely not the most overplayed and annoying trope in sci-fi or anything. ---

As I have Caldari Frigate/Cruiser/Industrial 5 and am training Battleship 5 (4 days left), I guess you could say I like Caldari.
My favorite ship so far is the Tengu. I have 3 of them: remote rep, local rep, probing/scouting. For PvP I prefer ECM ships, especially the Scorpion and Rook.
I'm currently training for a Caldari carrier, the Chimera, as my corp wanted me to, and we all fly Caldari too.
I am slowly cross-training to Minmatar, primarily for the armor-tanked Typhoon battleship (torpedoes!), and I'd recommend Minmatar for beginners. Minmatar have excellent frigates and cruisers.
Every race has strengths and weaknesses, so don't expect any race to be an I-WIN button though.

I apologize if I have offended you Mr Greybeard as I did not intend to or otherwise. I do acknowledge the reference you are implying does exist. I was simply referring to the big picture of a government being run by corporations similar to such paper RPGs like Shadowrun. I will be more careful with my choice of words in the future and will be sure to check my verbage more closely so as to dovetail the words with greater accuracy. Thank you for your input to this end. Now without further ado, I must return to watching Deadwood.
