Edited by: Clavian Voi on 24/03/2011 16:23:13 EVE Online is a game. Entertainment. That much is obvious to everyone, so comparisons to work, family, or other real life matters are largely pointless. But even though EVE is "just" entertainment, people can take entertainment pretty seriously. Music, sports, art -- they're all just entertainment too. And we all know people will spend vast sums on stereo equipment, big screen TVs, golf clubs, boxing equipment, rock climbing gear, etc.
When a type of entertainment really interests someone, whatever that entertainment might be, they're often willing to invest a lot of time, resources, and effort into it. In short, they take it seriously because it's more fun that way.
POLL: How "seriously" do you take EVE compared to other forms of entertainment?
1 - VERY seriously! Much more seriously than other games or about as seriously as a hardcore fan would take sports or music. 2 3 4 5 - MEDIUM. About as seriously as I would take any other computer or video game. 6 7 8 9 10 - NOT serious at all. I play for casual fun when I feel like it.

I play EVE in order to fuel my need for a personal crusade against botters, who are all dirty communists allied with Osama bin Laden. I shall not rest in peace until all of them have been impaled on sticks and prominently displayed around the circumference of New York City. __________________________________

I'd say 1. Otherwise I wouldn't get upset when I hear CCP making bad decisions (well, bad decisions in my opinion) about EVE.

Internet spaceships is serious business.
I think the people I know that spend hundreds of dollars on being crazed sports fans are silly. They think I'm silly for enjoying a computer game.
Either way, if you enjoy a thing and can justify the time and money for it, great!

Probably about an 8.5 or so. Sometimes I don't play for a week or more other than logging in to change skills, and if I do forget and go a day without a skill training it is nothing more than an "oh cock" moment.
I have had a several-month break from the game once and may do so again.
Nothing I do online (in or out of EVE) determines how I value myself as a person. Not the number of face-twit stalkers I might have, the ISK sum in my EVE wallet or the signature radius of my e-peen.
Nothing done in cyberspace can equal RL happiness. Do you think anyone starving under the threat of nuclear fallout in Sendai right now is worrying about their pixels?

right now, a 1-2 (due to RL) but even when I was at my most EvE'd up, no more than a 5-6, if that. .

I would say about a 3 for myself.
BTW, It surprises me that so many people are voting 6 - 10, meaning less seriously than other computer or video games. Really? I wonder what computer games these people take more seriously than EVE. Or did these people simply not read the poll?

Just like any other game I play--I play it to have a good time. When I feel like Eveing, I Eve, when I'm feeling Trekky, I STO, when I'm feeling the need to be Super, I play CO or DCUO. The only thing that matters to me is having fun. So...I don't take Eve or any other game "seriously", I take them "Fun-nilly." Yes I think people have looked at the topic wrong...
the OP really got it back to front .... I mean it usually goes up to 10 and then some will get 11 - and 11 is better than 10 .. see my previous post --

Using 5 as a baseline against any other random game, I would say about a 6 or 7. I could really care less if I make a mistake or if I have a lot of money, etc etc... On the other hand, I am quite interested in figuring out and knowing how to do things "correctly" or optimizing everything I do. And losing a big valuable internet spaceship is really pretty depressing and it takes me a day or so to get over it.
The people who are saying 1-3 are kidding themselves. Would you really be MORE upset over losing a match of Starcraft, TF2, CS, CoD, whatever than you would at losing a space ship in EVE? ----------

The poll was backwards then. We rated it more seriously than you did. ;-)

5-8 depending on how serious my gangmates are. I personally play the game for the interaction and pew pew but others really do take it more serious than even real life if the amount of time and effort they spend on the game is any indication. I know ceo's and fc who truely believe they are second only to god and are true leaders of men in a real life meaning. For them the prestige of isk, killboards and territory held are just as real as the prestige of their rl bank statement and reputation(or lack of it I think in a lot of situations). I chuckle at them tbh but I suppose without them who would arse themselves to organise all the huge corps and alliances.
