Edited by: Shondor Aldeland on 26/03/2011 07:58:26 Your corp is your support network. You run missions together, go mining, share resources and intel. When you join Eve Online Assassins, you'll find a supportive, active community. As you go about your daily routine, you just have to keep one thing in mind: one person in your corp is trying to kill you.
In Eve Online Assassins, every contestant receives one target that they must track and kill, solo. If they succeed, they inherit the victim's target, until the circle closes and only one winner remains. The winner takes home 1 Billion ISK. The assassin to chalk up the most targeted kills gets 1 PLEX.

Thanks, Bomberlocks. Hope to see you there.
This is a long-form PvP tournament. The contest should run close to a month, although it depends a little bit on how many contestants there are. Each person needs to kill 1 target per week or face elimination. This keeps people from hiding in station and waiting for the numbers to die down. You can keep engaging in your normal day to day operations, but you have to keep one eye open for greens. . .

I'm not playing enough at the moment (RL work) to be able to join this, but the idea is excellent. You could, with time even extend it to corps in an alliance. You'd have to modify it a bit, but the same premise would hold.

Good day:
This is an extremely interesting concept.
The two caveats I see is that you would have to leave your current corporation (T.R.I.A.D. is among the best FW corporations out there, and leaving even for a short period of time would be an ouch); and those of us in Minmatar FW are K.O.S. to the Amarrian and Caldari Navy would find it hard to participate (even if we left our cool corp) if most of the assassinations needed to take place in high security space.
Thank you.

For sure. This first round is a free for all, open to anyone, but if an alliance wanted to host an alliance-wide game, even in null-sec, it would be as simple as allowing EOA to temporarily join the alliance, or set it to blue status. In this case registration would be open only to alliance members and eliminated targets would be kicked right back to the corp they were in before.

One question - does your target know that you're the one hunting him? I think it would be neat if you just didn't know who you had to look out for, and have to be constantly looking over your shoulder. This would be very fitting for Eve...
Edit after clicking link: it seems that your target does not know you're his hunter. Excellent. [finger steepling emoticon] ---------------------------------------------- I don't have an alt, but there's a main that would be upset if he heard me say that... |

Edited by: Shondor Aldeland on 26/03/2011 19:56:14 Good points Mara;
Yes, the KOS between factions will pose a challenge, and an element of chance as well. Of course, every assassin has to try to get their target, so getting friends who aren't KOS to watch them, and tell you when they cross into Minmatar or Gallente space is the best way to overcome this obstacle. Also, your target has no idea who is stalking them. They have no reason to hide in Amaar space, because the assassin targeting them could be Amaar as well.
This is why it is all about stalking your target. Make an alt, ask friends for intel, figure out where they are based and get them with your main as soon as they cross a line.
As far as temporarily leaving your corp, I agree, that's the biggest commitment. I don't think there's any way around it because of Concord in high sec and the risk of confusing standings betweens corps in low or null.
Amanda: That's exactly it. You know who you're hunting, but you have no idea who is after you until they open fire.

Oh I know, I can't wait for the hunt to start. Just need some time to get the word out. Also, I think it's important for everyone to pick apart the rules, both to clarify anything thats confusing and to make any tweaks that are needed before the contest is live. Excellent. Glad to have you aboard, Octarius!
It's true, Faction Warfare is a career you'd have to put on hold until the end of the tournament. That said, there's no reason someone participating in this tournament can't continue to work as a pirate or PvP-er in general. You're only eliminated from EO-A if your assassin is the one to take you out.

awesome idea, but i think the rules are too broad. like what about use of alts? it seems everyone and their mom has an alt, that can either be used as scout, backup, boosting, etc... so i think you should come up with a list of parameters or a more specific list of rules. this of course wont stop everything(cloaky alt), but they are just there to make the game as equal as possible for all playing.
other than that, this should be fun.

This is a good point. A logi alt can still make a solo killmail out of a 2v1 fight, and there's no way to really verify its use unless a screenshot is taken of the blinky logi ship. But on the other side of the coin, it should be somehow possible for others to defend a target. This would result in bands of corpmates involved that would be somewhat distrustful of each other, seeing as one may backstab another should he become his target. That would lead to a lot of social dynamics. Also, if a target successfully fends off an assassination, does he get a point toward winning?

The kill has to be solo. Other than that, as far as alts, it's wide open. The way you track your target and plan your attack is up to you. Mission Runners will be able to use agent locators to know where their target is at all times. A miner with 100 friends that sit in local all day waiting for cycles will have split second intel. Someone with tons of money can bribe your former corps-mates to spill the beans about your habits. Nothing will be equal in this contest.
Logi assists are not allowed in combat, and I'll add that clearly to the rules. Nano is right, the only way to prove it is to get a good screenshot, that clearly shows the time and the cheat. If someone is cheating in this way, and it's proven, they will be declared rogue, fair game for anyone and everyone.
Contestants should "help" each other with intel, and that kind of intrigue is key to the competition. The potential for backstabbing is great, short of actually assisting each other in combat. Allowing people in EO-A to actually shoot at other people's targets would risk turning it into a kill greens on sight mess.
There are no points towards winning. The winner is the last one left alive. Still, killing your would-be assassin does help you in a couple of ways. It leaves you with no one targeting you, at least for a brief period. If you are the first person to kill someone targeting you, it might leave you with no one after you for a few days. Of course, you won't know when a new assassin is after you anyway. Also, the kill does count towards your overall kill count, which is used to determine the "Cold Killer" bonus prize of one PLEX.

Edited by: Nano J on 27/03/2011 10:34:03 Also, would "solo kills" have to be free of any NPC damage? ie killing a target inside a mission?
Oh, and what about pod-killing? I'm assuming only ship-kills count. I would hope pod-kills would be looked down upon, such as negating a successful assassination.

Great question. NPC damage on your target does not invalidate the kill. If you can catch your target with their pants down, more power to you. The ban on teaming up with other players in combat is specifically to prevent blobbing and encourage finesse, that rock-paper-scissors element of Eve combat.
Pod killing anyone in the competition is banned and will result in the offending competitor being eliminated. Because it is a long form tournament it's important that everyone can continue to train with all implants plugged in. The ONLY exception to this would be pod-killing someone without the loss of a ship by the victim within the last 5 minutes. That would indicate that the target is using a pod to keep themselves from being legal to engage, and that is an exploit of a rule intended to protect the contestants. Likewise, a competitor who is proven to be cruising around in a pod will be declared rouge and fair game for elimination by any contestant. I will be adding a section about this in the rules.

What if you kill someone who you're not hunting?
Suppose Player A is hunting Player B, who's hunting Player C. Player B is gatecamping for Player C when he is unexpectedly attacked by Player A. However, Player B manages to kill Player A in self-defense.
Since Player B was not hunting Player A, does it still count and cause elimination? Or is the only penalty for Player A that he needs a new ship? (And that Player B now knows who's hunting him..) -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

Edited by: Shondor Aldeland on 27/03/2011 16:53:31 It still counts, Player A is eliminated and Player B will finish his gate camp fairly certain that he's not being hunted for a little while.
Think of it like this. At any given time you are legally allowed to kill 2 members of the corp and eliminate them from competition: your target and the person hunting you. You just don't know who the second person is unless they give themselves away. That is also why the ban on shooting people that are not your target is about a pattern of behavior, not an immediate boot. You have to able to defend yourself if you come under fire. If you are positive someone is hunting you, keep eyes on them too. Get fitted to take them down and try to force their hand.
Also, (and this will be added to the rules) kills will stay valid if the parties involved are engaging only their own targets or assassins, even if damage ends up coming from multiple sources. Careful timing and planning has to be rewarded. The rules about ganging up are specifically to avoid a messy blob and going for contestants you have no reason to shoot.
Going back to your example: Say Player B is gate-camping his target, Player C. Player C jumps in and Player B kills him, but is down to hull himself. Right then, Player A, who has been watching all of this from afar, opens up with long range artillery and blows Player B out of the sky.
Now Player B is out, Player C is out, and Player A hasn't taken a scratch.

Are there going to be any limitations on location? I realize that if someone doesn't get a kill within a week, they're disqualified. It would be a bit easier if all this took place in a designated region or two. Of course, locating and stalking your target is kind of the point, but my main's standings won't allow me into Amarr or Caldari highsec.
What if your target and assassin are just completely inactive for the whole week? Are you forced to be disqualified since you're never able to engage anything? Or can we supplement our activity with other kills like pirating/anti-pirating?
I'm seriously considering at least putting an alt into this (if not my main for a second vacation from FW), hence all the questions.

Edited by: Roosterton on 27/03/2011 17:30:17 Alright, but that presents another problem. Suppose Player C never jumps in at all, and it turns into a fight just between A and B. If B wins, following the game's standards, he would then inherit Player A's target - which would mean himself, which makes no sense. If this does not take place, then nobody inherits his target, which means Player B is effectively invulnerable for the rest of the game. What would happen here?
(And yeah, I know I'm playing a huge game of "what if," but it's only because I'm actually really interested in this ) -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

I think if you kill your would-be assassin, you don't inherit yourself as a target (you already have one). And you wouldn't be invulnerable since you could still die to your own target (and believe me, if i find out who my assassin is, i'm going to try to kill him first). However, you wouldn't have an assassin until other incidents like this occur (or people get disqualified in other ways). Sooner or later though, there will be someone in need of a target.

Right on, Nano. There will be a pool of unassigned targets that will be reentered into the web as other people kill their assassins, are disqualified for other reasons, etc. Depending on certain factors, it may take a few days to be reassigned. For instance, you will never be assigned a target that is hunting you. (Until the endgame.)
Roosterdon: Thanks for questioning. ôWhat ifö is what its all about. Jude: Hi, and thanks. I missed your post before.
Back to the issues of regions and inactivity, there can't be any restrictions on regions, because the idea is that you can continue doing everything the way you usually would, with one extra goal and one extra thing to fear. The saving grace is that everyone will have to roam wide to be effective, and an active hunter will be killing or dead in less than a week, provided they aren't cursed with an absent target.
Anyone who fails to sign on for 3 days is eliminated automatically. Of course, that doesn't help if someone just blinks on and off a few times. If someone is genuinely hiding, not hunting their target, they will not make their kill. Another defense against lazies is that you have to report a kill as soon as it happens. There is no killing someone on the first day and waiting until your timer is almost up to report a kill. I will be watching the corp killmails like a hawk, and you are required to send an EveMail when you've killed a target.
Still, there is the chance that on the first round, you get a target that sits there like a lump until the timer runs out. Bring it up after a few days, and especially as the deadline approaches. If your target has not been moving and doesn't get their own target before timing out, you can be assigned a new target at the judge's discretion. This does mean that one can sit like a lump for 6 days and go for their target on the seventh. But they are gambling everything on getting a kill in the last day. The killboard is public, so you know approximately when your target's deadline is for the next kill. The best way to stay alive is cautious but aggressive offense.

The registration ISK is cheap. This is already a labor of love. I'll consider a freeroll at some point, but if I make a charity it will be for the orphans of the Minmatar Republic, not for pirates and killers.
Shaalira: There will be a recap page for each tournament on the website, but do I think a forum is called for as well. There will be some crazy moments worth writing down.
Aquana: We talked about target inactivity on the last page. If your target is truly inactive or not present, you can petition about it and get an exemption. If they kill their target, though, they are obviously not inactive.
Targets will be assigned in the following way: Everyone will be put on a spreadsheet in the order that they register and pay the fee. When registration is closed, I will draw numbers to fill in each persons target. There is no other choice to make. I said some things about a free target pool earlier if someone kills their assassin, but even that isn't necessary. If you kill your assassin, the person who was targeting your assassin inherits you as a target. If someone is kicked out for being inactive or cheating, the same thing happens. A diligent observer will be able to verify the whole system by killboard.

I agree, Nano. I'm looking into escrow services and trusted community figures to hold the isk. I need to use the registration fees to make the assassin/target chart as it comes in. I don't think someone who's a big enough player to back something like this will want to be bothered making lists of registration transfers, so my preference would be to transfer all of the prize money to the third party, have them vouch for it, and deal with the registration money in corp. This is the only business EOA is involved in, so things won't get confused.
I plan to make an announcement about the escrow holder this week.
