See subject, CCP stated they would give more info at fanfest.
I was not able to attend the fanfest, so please enlighten me; what did they say? |

They talked about how you can paint your ship pink and add ***** decals to it. Also how you will be able to walk around a room and pick out your attire for each day of the week.
Thats about all I got out of it.

They mentioned a few things about how the client will start to monitor itself for outside interference and that players will get a streamline mechanism to report bots. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

They talked alot about that topic, they even had a own Slot for just the security presentation.
There are now some serious guys hired by ccp in last fall.
One is a strict IT Security and the other is a specialist of programming anti virus and malware.
They said that bot, etc.. protections are already and will going into action the comming weeks. Also a direct report Bot Button will come, that will report to directly to the security department and not slow petitioning system.
They looked quite confident to already know hows using the bots which talk directly with eve servers.
Also a great thing regarding Account Security will be the new PIN Code Token that will be released in a few weeks.

A digital keyfob that generates a unique code specific to your account. It acts as a second level of security and has been employed in places like the banking industry for years. WoW have also had a similar system in place for quite some time.
Here are some examples of a security "token"

the keys use a time based algorithm to generate a dynamic password that changes over time based on either a random key or your internal userID... the wow one you have to type in the key, tho some will interface with a client by just plugging it into USB. Same mechanism, one is just easier for the user.

Nothing, it's more a security issue.

At the round tables, they said they were well aware of the botting problem associated with mining. BUT, on the other hand, and I see their point: if you remove them, we might have a mineral shortage. So they have hesitating on wheter removing them or not. We are on stand by for now.
Best regards. (Souverainiste)

A mineral shortage would be followed by tens of thousands of hulks being dusted off and getting out to the belts. I expect most players have a decent mining capability but won't waste their time as there is no money in it.

If there's a mineral shortage, suddenly you have newer players able to make some isk by getting greater value out of it. You also have miners becoming fatter targets for the ore they're hauling.
It would be interesting enough to be worth seeing unfold.

WTF! That almost sounds like an open invitation to use bots. What kind of f***ed up drugs are they on?
I've wasted almost 7 years manually mining, I need to get me a bot. |

CCP Sreggs said (in his phishing blog) they have decompiled bot programs and found said many botting programs steal account info, and the bot writers can then hack accounts.
But not if they do not have your token.

How would this security usb token work for someone like myself who has 7 seperate paying accounts? Would I need to have 7 seperate usb sticks plugged into my comp in order to run my accounts simultaneously?

Just like countries need to bail out banks, have CCP bail out the mining market. Slowly and using controlled injections to deflate or infalte the cost so that the impact is not substantial.

Were you attending the same round table I was attending?
They have already started banning players using behavioral detection. On the morning of Fanfest they had banned several hundreds of users of a particular bot.
The only "hesitation" is to ensure that they are confident that what they are seeing is botting behavior first, rather than having to reinstate thousands of accounts by hand ;)

Hurray to making mining usefull again. Lets make it worth while to spend 180+mil on a hulk hull. I would definately think about mining again if they made it worth while by getting rid of all the macro miners.

One token can be used for all you accounts. Its not USB, does not plug in to your computer, it just gives you a one time password which you use to log in.
Every time you push the button on it, a random number is produced. That number is a function of time and the unique serial number on the back of the token. Once you tell the server what serial number is on your token, it knows what random number to expect at any given time.
And oddly, it does protect botters from hackers. A side effect of protecting us all from hackers. And thats a good thing as it denies bot writers a source of income, helping convince them to go away.

No, one token for all your accounts, but don't expect them to be usb.
Edit: should have read all the replies to your questions...

CCP could boost yield of strip miners any given time to counter this. It's not a reason why botting should be approved. ------------------------------------------------- Play with the best - die like the rest starwreck.com - support the cause :) |
