Anyone else out there that thinks this is still an amazing game?
Havent looked at it for years, but loaded it up again (due to connection woe's.. damn you BT all the way to Hades!) and im still gobsmacked at just how amazing it is to look at and the play style still seems good... lets hope they make follow up to it

Never really got into it, but that doesn't make it a bad game, just means I'm (with the exception of Dragon Age) not a fantasy game player.
However, and there's no really polite way to ask this... What rock have you been living under to miss the PR train for Skyrim, the follow up you ask for?

I enjoyed playing it, still do occasionally. And like the other guy said, the sequel is Skyrim.
P.S. Abandon BT and move to Be, 99.999% of users don't regret it.

After I had played Morrowind for a long time I tried Oblivion when it was released. It is hard to describe how dissappointed I was, the entire game felt just to much dumbed down compared to Morrowind. Also the Morrowind Island/Setting was much more interesting then the boring Imperial Province.

Morrowwind was better but it seems almost impossible to play on modern PC with the menu resolutions so muddy and you can barely read item descriptions.
Graphics does not trump game play but when graphics are that old the game is unplayable its a big issue.

I agree with this. Morrowind seemed so much bigger than Oblivion. Maybe I stuck closer to the core questline in Oblivion or something...I don't know, but Morrowind just seemed to go on and on and on. Oblivion ended (for me.) I also thought the faction standings mechanic was kinda screwy in Oblivion.
But it was pretty to look at, I'll give it that.

confirming that I have never played morrowind before, and I thought Oblivion's side quests/exploration were lacking.
Then again, it was one of the first (or maybe second) wave of titles to come out for the next gen consoles. General rule of thumb is that the first few games for new consoles are going to be mehhhhhh, so I still thought Oblivion was excellent considering the conditions it came out under.

I enjoyed both Oblivion and Morrowind but i would definitely say Morrowind was the better game. Exploration and questing in Morrowind was so much better. You actually had a good chance of getting into real danger or finding something unique. Oblivion held your hand far too much i felt and content for exploration was horribly generic. Although there is one thing about Morrowind im glad wasnt in Oblivion. Cliff Racers...
The Shivering Isles expansion was good because it brought back a little bit of that Morrowind feel to Oblivion. Looking forward to playing Skyrim though.

Never played either Marrowind or Oblivion (though I got a copy of the former with ... something ...) but this girl I knew on another site said she played it so when I came across this:
Oblivion
I sent her the link and she laughed.

Edited by: Gistatis Tribunus on 04/04/2011 05:13:11 See, the thing with Oblivion is that Morrowind was an extremely amazing game bar the combat and the cliff racers, so it's probably going to be where people have a heightened scale of judgment when looking at Oblivion because of their previous experience. I thought that Oblivion was pretty fun, but then again I played Oblivion first and then Morrowind.
edit: I also hope that Skyrim manages to live up to the hype. From what I've seen so far it's looking great.

I played the SH*T out of both morrowind and oblivion. To add the rage pile..some thoughts.
Morrowind has some strong points. Some of the more fun points. Joining a house and making a home. I know you could buy homes on Oblivion, but my god..the televini (spelling) house that you could grow was soooo awesome. Initial difficulty also made the game very fun. Exploration and story depth are a give in. This is always the complaint versus oblivion, which is more or less correct.
In oblivion you CAN disregard the use of fast-travel. Most people don't because its so much easier and faster to fast travel, but with the introduction of horses NOT fast-traveling is a very fun way to explore. However, the exploring aspect goes right out the window with the mini-map in oblivion. YOu can't help but look to see where you need to go.
In morrowind you could spend forever trying to find that stinking cave hidden away in the mountains where you have a vague description that took you two hours to get in the first place. But it IS rewarding to play that way and i do hope they put in the ability to remove this feature. Lets look at some oblivion pluses though
Visually stunning, nearly all quests are given orally, much less to read. Speechcraft is more fun. Trading is more fun (owning businesses). The world interacts more without you (i have been chases by gangs that it litterally took 2 weeks in game for them to catch up with me, i've seen a bear chase a man in a village to wind up seeing them both dead in the nearest town, etc.). casting while holding weapons. being a vampire doesn't suck (it did in morrowind). actual bonuses on gameplay from leveling skills up (heavy armor not encumbering you or w/e). The list goes on.
In oblivion i think they missed the boat on the exploration side of things as being an option for players (i think most people find it tedious). Other than that though, there are many improvements that they made which are simply hawt.
More to come with skyrim (7 months left ) -------------------------------------------------

another thing that miffed me a bit about oblivion was scrapping the gazzilion classes and races you had.

I'm one of the people who loved Morrowind and found Oblivion to be "meh" ... Recently I discovered "Two Worlds II" and found it to be far superior to Oblivion.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

Maybe it has something to do with the platform you play action games on?
I played Oblivion on the Xbox, guessing all you haters play em on the PC with all the mods and whatnot.

Oblivion is still my game of choice for patch day.
The thing I like about the two bethesda games I've played (morrowind and oblivion) is the TES Construction set and the ability to MOD.
If there was anything you didn't like about the game, you could change it with a little effort or find somebody else's mod.
I do agree that Morrowind was the better game, it was so much bigger and the televani were really cool. The only thing I found lacking in morrowind was the combat, it was very simplistic.

I didn't like the way creatures leveled up with you in Oblivion, as I never got a sense that I was ever going into somewhere dangerous.
The leveling system also sucks. It pretty much forces you to abandon immersion in favour of ensuring you get your 3 chosen skills for that level up 10 pips each to get the max attribute boost. This was the worst bit for me. Damn, the time I wasted jumping off rocks on hillsides to boost Athletics skills....

Daggerfall!
Though if i had to choose between Morrowind and Oblivion, i'd choose Oblivion. The ONLY thing Morrowind has is the more unique art style and better main quest, and i think it's jading people's eyes a little bit. Nostalgia plays a huge factor, same for me, but objectively i'd pick Oblivion over Morrowind since it has better actual gameplay.
The combat in Morrowind just sucked. Too much dice-rolling without really knowing what happened. It's much much more hands-on in Oblivion, and the more visceral feel helps make up for the more generic art style. That said, the story in Oblivion isn't bad! The Brotherhood chain, Paradise, Sheogorath's and Sanguine's daedric quests, and particularly the Gray Fox quests for the Thieves' Guild. Only the main story stood out in Morrowind for me, most of the side quests felt a little more generic and lateral, whereas most in Oblivion go really deep into the material of where they came from.
Morrowind is STILL a very very good game, don't misunderstand me. There's just a lot of things that make Oblivion just that little bit better, in my opinion, especially gameplay. I will say that i didn't do much alchemy or magic on my characters in either game, i preferred to stay as mundane as possible. Invisibility kinda ruined both games for me at some point :(

Forgot to say, but don't play either game without mods. This goes moreso for Oblivion though, where mods are practically essential. I can only recommend looking into Francesco's or OOO mods, which completely rebalance the game (for the better, either is a personal choice). Some texture mods are also recommended, like the LOD fixes, grass fix, or better yet, Qarl's texture pack, which makes Oblivion look pretty much like Crysis in terms of graphics fidelity.
As for the levelling system, personally i prefer it over the generic "kill x monsters to get to level y". Vastly preferring is the term, actually. I find it helps immersion a lot more if you can only level by doing what you're actually good at, rather than levelling by doing things you're not really supposed to be doing (getting to level 80 as a mage in wow but never actually casting a spell is possible - and makes no sense).

I couldn't finish Oblivion due to its horrible UI. I got tired of it and uninstalled it halfway through the main quest. Yes, I did try mods to fix it. Ignoring the UI issues, gameplay-wise it was still inferior to Morrowind.

Yes it is still an amazing game. Morrowind was more amazing, but luckily for those who don't play on consoles there are uncountable mods available to fix that. After a tedious job of patching and modding, I think Oblivion is better overall than Morrowind (which I never modded, so comparison might be bad).
The Must-Have mod at any time is the latest OOO (just google OOO Oblivion). After that, sort mods by popularity at http://www.tesnexus.com/ and install whatever you fancy. There are too many mods to even begin recommending any. I ended up with at least 50+ before I started a new game and it was indeed new. Stock Oblivion pales in comparison. Just be sure to read instructions on load order and compatibility notes thoroughly to avoid frustration.
