Yes I play - on the US servers.
These threads always attract HoN players eager to dissuade others away from LoL.
Personally I play both; there's no doubt for someone new to the DoTA genre League of Legends offers an easier learning curve and better experience overall, though HoN does have its charm.
Can't wait for Valve's DoTA 2.

LoL and heroes of newarth, for reasons I cannot fathom have the most extreme nerd ragers I have ever expierienced in any game. And I have played a lot of them. Not even in EVE do player deaths cause so much frustration as they do in DOTA-type games.

As an avid LoL killfeeder, I can attest to this.

Yeah there is alot of 14 year old Spanish and French kids that have some serious rage problems. But once you get out of the low end of the game it gets a a bit better. The main problem i find is people rq and then leave 4 people in the ****. But saying all that im still really enjoying it.

Pretty much the exact reason why i didnt bother playing for very long. That and the games went on for sooooo long.

I've played it, had some fun.
Comparing it with the DOTA mod for WC3, LOL is much better. While dota had serious issues with lag, ******ed control systems etc lol exceeds. Also the grass and bushes makes for fun hiding and tactics.

Always dismissed LoL as baby's first DotA. Heroes of Newerth is far more geared toward competitive play, for one you can deny creeps >.>

Edited by: yumike on 06/04/2011 16:40:02 I play on US realm occasionally, i've played hon too.. but in the latter i'm usually referred to as a not exactly "pc term".
Though the ragers probably go away in hon as you get higher elo, I haven't seen them for a long long time in LoL once your 1400-1500+ they kind of dissappear

Or you could look at it the other way completely, and point out that when you deny in lol you don't get "half exp" - the other team gets exactly 0.
From that perspective hon babysits you by giving half xp still. HoN does snowball faster due to the gold loss on death however, which makes it very easy to shut out specific players. Whilst in LoL thats not really the case and even getting focused you can be competetive late game.

I play LoL. It's fun but not as complex as DOTA was on WC3. I miss a lot of the heroes from DOTA...Lich, Techies, Puck, Magnus, Treant, Naga...any many others.
I can't wait for DOTA 2. Dear god I can't wait.

Then you'll probably like HON. It's basically a direct copy of the game mechanics of DOTA. I'm pretty sure that most of the heroes that you mention are in HON under different names, though I'm not sure as I never seriously played DOTA.
Anyway, I play both LOL and HON about equally. Both are quite good. |

Seems like those games don't have an equivalent of the Invoker. Too bad, I was about to try out HoN but I'll stay with DotA as long as they don't make an Invoker.

is dota 2 the valve-made one? i heard Icefrog is helping produce it? isnt he more or less the creator of the genre? i personally don't like the art style in LoL. it makes me feel like i am 12 who just bought a new pokemon deck.

Edited by: NeoShocker on 07/04/2011 03:11:01 Former DoTA player here for years. I play LOL quite often nowadays. I did experience playing HoN through a friend invitation.
As the earlier post mentioned between HoN and DoTA, they're almost (if not, exactly) the same game play and mechanics and map layout and shop locations. All of the DoTA items and heros are renamed, so those that played DoTA, will already know how to play HoN, just need to know the new names. But of course there are new added contents for HoN. But that's all I can say after playing 2 games (4-6 games limit if I recall before buying, which I didn't)
For LoL, gameplay is similar between HoN and LOL, but think DoTA + WOW for levels (30 lvl cap and that WILL give you great edge once at 30) and 2 "summoner spells" that everybody gets. Also LOL game mechanics are quite different and some of the gameplay is little changed.
I want to play HoN over LoL, but you can't really beat free version, and I did put some cash into LOL (vroom vroom blitz skin) :O
DidIevermentionthatIextremelyhatesummonerspellsandIHATEtheirforums?
Sometimes LOL irks me. I was | | close to buy digital (until I found out steam have it, but its EURO only, still eagerly waiting for US version for steam), but server problems do occur and prevents me from considering to buy the package. Sometimes (or rather usually) weekends server is borked. But that's fine and dandy since its ... free ... *eye twitching, feeling rage*
Riot put up new heroes almost weekly, so server problems don't really bug me and you "Grind" to buy new heroes. So you can technically own all heroes and upcoming new ones easily if you play it quite often. Any new player that starts LoL gets 8 free champions, and those champions changes weekly, almost every monday for new lineup. So final verdict. For more "skilled" based game, go HoN, but prepare to shell out $$ to play it, or play the "casual" and free game, LOL. I still recommend LOL, but make sure you have friends, you will need them.
I was told this:
Quote: A good game, but a bad community? Pick HoN. Decent game, but great community? Pick LoL
And I do question the "great" community, especially that their forums suck ass. I thought eve-o is bad, but it isn't. Decent I must say, but LoL forums are terrible.
And BTW, its ShockerX, US version of LOL if you want to add me, just let me know in eve mail when you're on to play so we can add. In fact I'm on right now. :O ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

I love league of legends, i have HoN as well, but I just like having a bit more flexibility with runes and masteries.
For any folks that are thinking of playing LoL, my username on the NA (North America) server is GoGoGadget. League of Legends NA

Love the game but took a long break from it because of all the rage quiters I met at a certain point. I'm pretty sure it's now called ELO Hell since ranked games are actually finished.
It's honestly a hard game to get back into though after a leave of absence because tehy add and modify things so fast. I literraly felt like a noob starting over because there were champs I didn't understand at all and items I've never seen before.
Still a great game though and would highly recommend it if you have 30-60 minutes of free time for a game.

Alot of the commentators still mix up the HoN and DotA names for things, which is quite funny at times.
And to be frank, HoN really doesn't cost alot of money. At 30USD it's probably alot less than most highstreet sold games and will likely last you alot longer (except EVE). There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |
