Just come back after a long gap and been having some fun.
One thing I have noticed is that market prices for salvage (L4's in hisec) seem to have plummeted since I was last about. Is it still worth doing? I was thinking maybe it would be worth making rigs and selling those rather than selling the salvage itself, but if the prices are really so low, I would be better buying the salvage on the market rather than taking the time to salvage them myself...?
Or is there a chance to salvage some rare items which are worth the time?
Hmm, another alternative leaps out at me now. Am I just a victim of people setting up buy orders near trade hubs for ridiculously low prices to catch all the muppets (me) doing right click->sell? I can check that when the servers come back up...

Well theres still ninja salvagers, so there must be some value.
Though maybe that's just the chance at getting aggro on the mission runner...

Some of us ninja salvage just because we think it's fun, the ISK and occasional carebear explosions being just so much icing on the cake. For a mission bear, the Noctis is a game changer and from what I've seen most mission runners are using them. This flooded the market with salvage and drove prices down. I'm off the opinion that LP grinding is the best hourly ISK for a mission runner, but if you've an alt on another account who can fly a Noctis while you're grinding the next mission, it's probably worth doing. Welcome back. _____________________________________ Join our public channel "Ninja Dojo" Recruiting is now: OPEN http://ninjaextravaganza.wordpress.com/Ninja Extravaganza, Strategies for Ninja Salvagers[ |

The simple answer is yes, you are a "victim" of low price buy orders. To be a little more helpful, you are better off these days getting a Noctis (dedicated salvage vessel) training T2 salvagers and fitting salvage rigs. Reprocess all the loot for its mineral content and use it to either build your own ammo/modules/ships to use yourself, or for sale on the market. Keep the salvaged components and build rigs also either to use yourself, or for sale.

How long has it been since you last played the game?
There's a dedicated salvage ship now. Where before it took you 40 minutes to salvage X Extravaganza wreck fields, it now takes 10, or less. ____________

Tripped power cicuits is where it's at. I get 5-10x an many of those as trit bars or armor plates, and they sell for as much or more than trit bars and about 1/3 the price of armor plates.

If you're still set on clearing fields of wrecks, it can be more efficient just using the Noctis to loot, and not worry about salvaging - considering how pitiful T1 salvage values are now. On balance though, if you're just looking to maximise isk/hour, blitzing and LP farming is the way to go.

Lots of helpful advice thanks. I will have a go with the Noctis and check the prices at a trade hub or two.
If nothing else it will break up the mission boredom a bit, even if I only do it once in while! I would get bored doing missions non-stop for hours.

unless you're really slow at 4's salvage is not worth docking and coming back in a noctis for, faction missions excluded
fit something that can salvage as you go or don't bother

Its not worthless, the prices have been moderated from the early days by the availability of material, the scaling of rig sizes (especially since the small and medium rigs required less than the original one size fits all rigs), and the changing of the winds in terms of what rigs are hot commodities based on the latest nerfs.
Once upon a time, everyone wanted cap rigs, and melted capacitor consoles could finance motherships (slight exaggeration). These days armor rigs are the thing, where not long ago, every hauler under the sun was after cargo rigs (these still become popular right after a Hulkageddon). But like anything, time tends to bring prices down once the novelty wears off, and harvesting becomes stupendously efficient (the aforementioned Noctis). In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

armor plates are less than half of what they were a year ago
bars are like 1/3
if it takes you 2 hours to do a 4 in your drake or whatever then by all means do it but with the loot nerf and the tanked out salvage prices, its really not worth doing at all if you can run another 4 in the amount of time it takes you to salvage the first one, and alot of people can

Well worth checking.
Also, market prices fluctuate. Check the market history tab and the various price / time graphs to see pricing history for your particular goods.

Noctis destroyed ninja salvaging, everybody has their alts or corpys sitting with this dedicated salvage raep boat by then time you get in.
Used to be the worst thing for a ninja was wiping others tears off. I hate the noctis.

Most Noctis pilots are awful because they're not used to salvaging efficiently (and if they're an alt, they can't). Even if they do give their full attention, your salvage boat should be significantly faster and thus able to burn towards the tractored wrecks to get the first salvage cycle.
If the noctis destroyed ninjasalvaging for you, then you sucked at it.

Once upon a time you could pay for your account off of one or two sold rigs lol I know, I used to do just that.
