Right I relaxed a bit and let it do its own thing - and lo and behold, the fans DID rev up by themselves after a while and eventually outside Jita I was down to 65-70 degrees celsius on the GPU Diode (iStats). Like many other, I too come from a PC environment. Wouldn't suprise me at all if my custom built rigs gfx card under windows reaches exactly the same temperatures, only we never notice it as we can't put our hand on it like we can with an aluminium shell like macs have. I think anything under 90 is probably comfortably OK as far as heat wear/tear goes. And that's the GPU, the iMacs own CPU never went above 50¦. --- RBJ |

Unfortunately this is just what you have to do with Macs because Steve Jobs wants them all to run silently, so the default fan speeds are quite low. Use SMC Fan Control to bump them. In windows (in boot camp)(it should run cooler than osx because its not in the Cider wrapper) I use macfan on my iMac, running at about 3/4 of max speed and the noise is only just noticable, but makes a big difference on the top of bezel temps. I'm hoping the same can be done with the mac book air next month, and that it can handle duality ok and later incarna.

Intel rate their Core processors as stable to over 100 degrees C.
Macbook Pro's get hot when they're under load. That's the idea of an aluminium unibody, it disperses heat. You'll notice as soon as you drop the load, all of the temperatures drop rapidly.
You'll also notice people here complaining about heat, but no one complaining of a broken computer.
Either buy a gaming PC or infect your perfectly good Apple product with Windows via Bootcamp(Mac OS will never run games as well as Windows)... Either way STOP WHINING !!!
Eve (and a wall mounted air conditioner (in heating mode)) raised temps to such a degree that it melted components surrounding the GPU on a 2008 17" macbook pro with hires glossy screen. This was before I knew about smc fan control or macfan. The macbook pro was out of warranty and apple wanted to charge 3000 AUD for a new logicboard...
I now run a 27" iMac in windows 7 and keep things cool with macfan. Without macfan the top of the coomputer gets almost too hot to touch. With macfan it is simply warm.

The best solution is to build a PC from scratch using a good case, good power supply, very good cooling, and Nvidia hardware. Nvidia hardware is practically designed to be heat effecient. ____________ ___441815___ ^^My Signature is Better than Yours^^ |

That's why old Mac Books were built with NVidia. Until NVidia produced a whole lot of chips that would break because of heat stress even if they were not heated past the rated thermal design.
I guess the best solution is to research what temperature your components are certified to be able to sustain and only start worrying if that temperature is reached and surpassed. -- And then there's of course the thing with it getting FPS even slower than the character creator, heating up video cards, taking a noticeable time to fully load ... |
