So I am now capable of flying a rorqual but i have not trained up the other stuff for it. What should I be training as far as shield and industry skills to make it worth flying and not just a floating brick?

All Ore processing skills to 4 Ice processing 4 Industrial reconfiguration to 4 (5 would be great) Mining director 5 cybernetics 5 Cap Indy 4 (5 would be great)
Jump skills Jump drive calibration 4 (5 is way better) Jump Fuel Conservation 4
That gets you most of the desired uses for compressing ore/bonuses/hauling.

Start by loading EVEmon for starters but you need :
Every single skill from navigation to at least 4, jump portal generation isn't needed though. All capital sized modules (ie.capital shield boosters, armour repairers etc.) require V skills. Gravitron physics IV for capital tractor beam. Skills for industrial core. Hefty amount of drone skills. Leadership skills for mining foreman gang links.
That's about it.

All of the above plus:
Capital Industrial 4 (my alt has 21 days left on training 5) Mining Director 5 + Cybernetics 5 = Mining Foreman Mindlink Warfare Link Specialist 5 Jump Drive Calibration 4 (preferably 5)
My Rorqual is fit like this. It never leaves the POS force field. I keep several other modules in it, just in case, and a Shadow faction control tower and some fuel (also uses Oxygen Isotopes).

im using eve mon but its hard to get an idea what to train. im running an orca now with high leadership but its the ore skills that had me confused on what needed to be trained to be able to compress them and so forth. thanks for the fit too that really helps.

Compression skills are easy: level 4 material refining specialization is required by the compression BPO, and Industrial Reconfiguration 1 to fit the Industrial Core module.

It should also be pointed out that there's one skill for every major ore type (i.e. veldspar processing for veldspar including dense and concentrated forms).. plus there's the ice skill that covers all forms of ice.
Incidentally, if you do ice compression do yourself a favor and research the PE on your ice compression blueprints. The ice compression jobs can take over an hour and a half with a full cargo load and an unresearched bpo.

Those are the refining material specialization skills I mentioned training to level 4.
Quote: Incidentally, if you do ice compression do yourself a favor and research the PE on your ice compression blueprints. The ice compression jobs can take over an hour and a half with a full cargo load and an unresearched bpo.
All compression BPO have the same manufacturing time. It starts at 60 seconds without skill or P.E. research applied.
Compression time = 48 * (1 + 0.25 / (1 + P.E.)) * (1 - Industry Skill * 0.04)
There is little point in researching ore BPO further than P.E. 20, as you are limited in the number of runs you can do in a single job by your cargohold size. You may want to research ice BPO more, as the fractions of a second add-up with multiple runs.
Compression time = 48 * (1 + 0.25 / (1 + 20)) * (1 - 5 * 0.04) = 38.85714 seconds per run

I forgot to mention that if you fit as I did above in the mids, in that exact order, you can overheat the MWD for one cycle without any heat damage (I have Thermodynamics 4).
If you start to warp, then overheat and activate the MWD for one cycle, the Rorqual will warp in 10 seconds, at the end of the cycle.
