I bought my first carrier a while back and she was loaded with all sorts of drones, including Ogre IIs. I didn't think anything about it, until later when I was wondering, 'When the hell will I use these?' As fighters are so much faster in speed, more durable, and seem to hit for considerable more damage at any sized target an ogre would shoot at, is there a real reason to have them? Just wondering? Thanks!

As the poster above said, better to have them and not need them than to not have them.
Additionally, Ogre IIs have one advantage that fighters don't: they can be set to aggressive. I know at least one genius who used to warp his carrier into an anomaly, activate smart bombs to spawn everything, then launch Ogre IIs and kill everything AFK while doing another anomaly with another character. With fighters, you have to order them to attack every target.

What system is this? I would like to see this technique performed firsthand... for research purposes ofc.

TBH it's not quite as stupid as it sounds, providing that both characters are in the same system. Since he's going to be watching local anyway he's no more screwed than any other anom-running carrier if a neutral/hostile shows up. |

Primarily you will use fighters yes, but what if they are killed? Then you like to be able to keep applying damage, and you dont have space for 3 more flights of fighters. So you put a bunch of t2 heavy/sentry drones in too, and aditionally generally a load of t1s.

For pvp, no real use. For pve they are handy at times. As said they auto aggress so you can have that toon alt tabbed. When a lvl5 I'm actually farming tags on is nearing it's end, I'll have my cyno alt hop in a noctis and start looting/salvaging while my main continues killing stuff effectively afk with ogres/berserkers. I also find them more effective than lights against a lot of elite frigates. Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

Just like the issue regarding real life firearms or first aid kits. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Be the kind of man that when your feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh crap, he's up!"

Well, don't forget the vastly smaller volume. If you bring 1 less fighter you have space for 200 backup heavy drones, or more usefully, an assortment of logistics / ecm / mining / light + med drones. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

When are you going to use 15 fighters at once? Might as well pack 14 and use all the spare room for a ton of drones you can use as backup if your fighters get picked off.
I attacked a frig/cruiser fleet in my Chimera (years ago) and ended up pulling in my fighters and throwing out a swarm of light drones to chew through the frigates a little quicker, particularly since the little b@$t@rds were focus-firing my fighters.
Life was good when I was one of the few carrier pilots in EVE. Everybody and their mother has one now. Or I should say, everyone has a mothership now.

The first part is untrue. Know what variable that correlates most with getting shot? Gun ownership.

You probably will never use 15 fighters at once ever. At least 10-12. Of course I do not know what you will use your carrier for but generally its a good a idea to have a little bit of everything you can. That way you can send out drones depending on what your targets weaknesses are. Shield/armor rep drones. All sizes of ecm drones (useful if, god forbid, you get tackled by a Heavy Dictor. Dictors can pack a heavy tank and might not be able to kill one before more arrive. I even pack heavy neut drones just in case said dictor has ECCM. If you cant jam them, neut them i say.

I'd rather use t2 sentries over heavies anyway, but nothing wrong with bringing a flight of heavies along.

in a country that has more guns than households a corelation between owning a gun and geting shot in the comition of a crim is not that big of a strech.
you might as well say that the variable that most corelates with haveing doggfood in the house is (wait for it) owning a dog.

After you've been tackled and they've blown up your fighter compliment, you will be happy you have a steady stream of 100 Ogre's to throw at them.
Or if your in any situtation where you might have to emergency cyno out and dont want to leave 150m ISK laying around in space.
