The Rook suffers from a schizophrenic disorder: It doesn't know what it is most of the time and it'll be in the wrong fit/role for whatever situation you end up in. Do you want to EHP tank or or ECM... perhaps a bit of both. What roll to pick: ECM or dps... perhaps a bit of both. HAM or HML, point or scram and that one fit that'll work GREAT in one situation will get you killed in any other AAAAHHH!!
In other words, it's impossible to give a fit as it so much depends on what situation you're in. I guess that translates to "perhaps not the best ship to PVP in, you might get lucky but that's offset by being useless/dead in many other encounters". The only fit that might make sense is the "I'm a HAM cerb" one and even that is very debatable.
Stick to a Falcon for ECM support, for anything else fly something different.

Yeah, you can safely ignore everything this guy says ever. HAM Rook is the only possibly viable choice? Don't make me laugh.

Jam strength of 11.25, and about 400 dps. Want to take ECM strength over dps? Swap a BCU or two to a SDA. Really need that extra jammer? Drop the invul. The Rook is perfectly capable of doing multiple things at once.

well the rook can jam as good as a falcon while having a bit more EHP and doing some more damage.
granted it doesn't have the cov ops, but it can lock farther (better vs damps than falcon), and has better sensor str (32 vs 28 of falcon), so it can better withstand counter-jamming. ---

Perfect summary, really.
The decision is the balance between ECM, DPS and tank, and whichever you choose will depend strongly on the type of engagements that you expect and what you seek to focus on. As noted, a Rook can deal over 300 DPS at over 100 km, and 400 with drones. It can defend its range advantage, remove hostile ewar boats from the field and apply respectable DPS to a primary.

It truly is the most capable Caldari ship in the hangar. Almost better than the Cerb at ranged missile damage, as good as the Falcon for jamming--a very, very capable ship.

Almost better? Rook = Selectable damage + drones , Cerb = 200km range.
The biggest mistake people make with the rook is building it to do all 3 (Damage/ECM/Tank) after losing a couple and having solo and small gang success I have pretty much decided that the boss rook and small gang rook are the only options.
Solo Boss Rook: HAMs 4 Racial Jammers Web + Point + MWD Ballastic Controls Aug rigs Summary: Your jams are your tank, engage and grab anything coming through the gate BC size or smaller. Watch local, disengage if you miss a jam and they get drones out, avoid Recons and BS like the plague. OL your racial jammer if its a BC.
Small Gang: I personally just put HML launchers on it, a full rack of racials with signal amps and jam range rigs. Warp in behind fleet at 70km, get pre-aligned, and fire away. Doesn't have the 500+ dps of the solo HAM rook but with 7 amped racial jammers and sitting 70km away spewing your 250 or so dps it is a VERY VERY big small gang tide turner.

Longer lock range, a missile range bonus etc.
It's fairly obvious where the Rook excels, play to it's strengths.
People have a tendency to use it where the Falcon excels, just because it can bring damage to the table. The result is setups that do not bring out it's full potential, being caught out and left behind or simply being pushed off the field more easily than the Falcon.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 18/04/2011 17:04:07 @duches: your fit is a gang fit, in which case you want the scouting/surprise of a cloak so yours is a useless fit. Your "about 400 dps" includes drones, you probably don't get that close in and if you do your puny EHP won't last long. Oh and <12 TOTAL jamming power means a dedicated Falcon will out perform you with one module.
@grim: in that role it's a pure ECM ship, in which case the covops cloak on a Falcon with SDA's and more ECM mods is a far more tactical choice, you know this.
@nolimit: on your first bit, exactly
@Gypsio: no it can't remove hostile ewar boats from the field, not with 12 jamming power.
It's like this; if you make a gang you want certain roles covered, you want your dps to dps, your tacklers to tackle and your ecm to jam. The Rook is "a bit of whatever" making it half arsed and thus not focussed on it's role. It'll work fine as support ecm/dps in a gang that's already doing well but in a fight where it really matters I'll want the jams to STICK and be able to cloak, and fck the silly 300 dps.

I have a friend that flies a Rook a lot. He fits it with multi-spectrals, oddly enough. Manages to keep most ships BC-sized and smaller jammed pretty reliably while he chews them up. Sometimes the jams miss and he gets blown up, but he's usually careful enough that he wins more than he loses even when they bring friends. The Rook is a surprisingly good solo ship if you know what you're doing. Far moreso than the Falcon.
Alternatively, if you know what sort of ship you're up against (or you're careful about target selection), just fit four of the same race and you can keep most ships permajammed while you slowly pound them into dust.
An ECCM-fit Rook with Caldari jammers is also an excellent anti-Falcon ship, though it's somewhat vulnerable to the rest of the Falcon's fleet.

Infinity jam strength does not remove a hostile ECM boat from the field. It's the 300 DPS to >100 km that does. And in a fight where every little matters, DPS and ECM >>> ECM and cloak.

Until you get more experience under your belt, stick with HML and be fleet support. It isn't a cheap ship to be soloing about in. Learn to stay aligned, maintain distance, bug out to the nearest celestial and come back, etc. A ranged rook in a small gang fight is a PITA to kill.
After you get a feel for the do's and don'ts you can try to solo with HAMs but I'm telling you flying tankless is not for the faint of heart. It isn't exactly like you run into 1vs1's all the time.
Plus the thing is worthless on stations as you WANT them to shoot back. There are better solo recons (curse) and better solo missile boats (drake/tengu) but nothing looks as badass as the rook.

I like the rook but lack the isk to play with it on the main servers. However after testing a solo rook fit on SiSi I found it to be a great little ship and in packs they are deadly to just about everything

^ This.
And the idiot obviously didn't read any of the points in which it's quite explicitly stated that the Rook can be configured for whatever role the pilot/fleet needs. _________________________________

I know that curse is a better solo pvp but my char is made for missle/ecm with over 70% of my skill points alone so, curse/drake/tengu is not the best solo/small gang pvp ship for me also I love the idea of warping in and jamming the **** out of any bc and smaller ship and doing good damage to them.
