I know this problem. I'm happy that, for now, monitor manufacturers all have boners for 3d and aren't looking at HDR too closely. But one day, some bright spark / dumb bastard will realise that they can sell monitors with backlights brighter than the eye can really withstand, intense brightness that temporarily blinds and that they can actually perform the Flashbang Grenade effect, or Dark to Light transition iris graduation, actually in the eye of the player. Rather than be limited to 255,255,255 for brightest white they can go beyond it and literally Eve's Graphic ****s will set their suns and gas clouds to literally blind us into submission.

Seriously go out into the countryside with no light pollution and you will see just exactly how colorful the night sky REALLY is. And besides, the graphics aren't even on any server yet, you've just seen videos and already you're complaining. That is kind of rediculous. I think CCP needs to get back to "this is the game, we improve it, take it or leave it". _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

Eh. Unlikely.
Even if such a monitor/TV were to be manufactured, the extra dynamic range is completely pointless if the software doesn't support it. For years we've been stuck with 32-bit color and, well, I've yet to see any talk of expanding to 64-bit from anyone, anywhere. Your graphics card would have to support it, the software would have to support it, the monitor has to support it - it's a hugely expensive endeavor without anywhere near the obvious appeal of simply going to 3D or increasing screen resolution.
Still, I imagine it will happen eventually simply because the march of technology is unstoppable. Whether or not it becomes widespread is another matter entirely...

I kind of have to agree. While it is horribly unrealistic to find a big colorful nebula near every single damn system, the night sky with 0 light pollution is a real sight to behold. There is more light than there is black empty space. Go to the middle of the desert, or the top of a mountain far away from a city, and look at the night sky. Seeing the milky way properly for the first time is a humbling moment.

Do you live in a highly dense star cluster like New Eden? No, you don't. Space would obviously be much brighter where all the stars are so close to each other. The closest star to our sun is 4.2 light-years, and the distance goes up rapidly after that. We're in a pretty quiet piece of space, nothing like a star cluster. -

And have no user-adjustable contrast controls, because this is the far future and we're over the primitive expectation that technology should serve us.

Although I'm sure this is a Troll...
The new nebulas previewed at fanfest look awesome imo. I don't think, though, that if you happen to not like them, that there should be alternate starry space scenes. It's how the game looks, you can't have every little item in the game run via a checkbox to turn it on/off. Next you'll be wanting the spinny light on the Eris to be toggleable.
Agree 100% that space should be darker though. There is simply too much illumination. I'd enjoy a more foreboding and darker lighting in EVE in general, if not just 0.0/lowsec/WH for example.

I think the nebulas ruin the game graphics. The real space is not so colorful, and it's annoying. When you redo the nebulas please give us also the change to hide them, if possible.
Thank you
also please make space darker.

The problem is that, at any distance where those kinds of phenomena would cover a significant portion of the sky, they'd be too sparse to be seen that way; at any distance where they'd show up that colourful, they'd be pretty small.
àand just filling the skybox with stars would provide much the same beauty without the technicolour extravaganza. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I don't see that as a problem. Just look at the video I posted on page 1: same vividness without the "oops, I tripped over the paint bucket" feelà
Granted, that's space through an atmosphere, but I'd still prefer that to wall-to-wall clouds. Sure, make those clouds decorative details on the skybox, and let us use the (not very by now) new fancy zoom to get a closer look, but stars/galaxies really should dominate imo. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I honestly do not understand objections to having the *option* to turn off nebulas and/or dim them. If someone is happy with flying around in bubble-gum space, then great, have fun with it. Some of us would prefer a more stark environment and would enjoy the higher contrast.

Either way you're asking for EXTRA resources. Be it a backdrop which is simply starry or a backdrop which is simply black plus the work to implement the code to offer the choice.
I think there has to come a point where you say, this is what the game looks like. We have more choice in EVE than most, disabling turrets, drone models, explosions etc etc and this is a case of being given an inch and asking for a mile.

Not really. There used to be a map open and undock bug where you could get stars only background if you wanted it. Stars and bubblegum are on two different "layers" apparently.
