Hi
I'm concerned there's some game interface option I'm not aware of.
I'd like to get a good overview of a few asteroid belts, for the purpose of setting bookmarks in them that I can later warp to and mine, but it's hard to see where all the asteroids are, because they're dark against a black background of space. Furthermore when I zoom out they're tiny dark specks.
Turning on the Tactical Overlay helps surprisingly little.
Is there some hotkey or in-game function that I can use to make the game temporarily make all asteroids on grid highly visible?

Add the ore types to your overview. Your best way is to make a BM around 200km away from the belt, then pick a good target from the overview and warp there.

That doesn't help me at all, with seeing or understanding the spatial location of the individial asteroids in the belt, so that I can decide where to create warp-to bookmarks, based on my mining range.

Asteroids in belts are found in a semicircle whose centre is the default warp-in location to the belt. So, 2-3 bookmarks spaced along the arc of the asteroids should put you in range of most if not all of them. --- ISD IonCharge Lt. Commander ISD STAR |

Drop below the plane of the astroyed belt so you have lines betwean the rocks and the tactical overlay.

I do understand the semicircular shape, in the abstract, but I'd like to get a concrete overview of specific individual asteroid belts.
The best method I know is to zoom out and then rapid once-click (LMB) on many different asteroids in the overview. That gives me a poor impression of the spatial extent of the belt, but it's inelegant, and it makes me look silly.

You can modify your overview brackets to give asteroids an icon. That way they will have a highlighted target you can easily select. I suppose you could even get it customized to have different brackets for different types of ores.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Is it easy to do? I just open overview, and explore this "brackets" thing?

I would read through this then play around with it in game

sorry but my answer here would have been tactical overlay, works great for me when trying to figure out where all of the pyroxeres in belt for example, is

Hi Salped,
I've found this to be a useful guide to setting up overview settings:
http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/17/eve-evolved-setting-up-your-overview-part-1/ http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/25/eve-evolved-setting-up-your-overview-part-2/
That said, I've never had to use it for mining. Zooming out to a birds eye view with the Tactical Overlay on generally gives me a pretty good picture of the belt. While helping a new corp member recently we found that an entire starter system had been completely mined out - I wonder if you're only seeing tiny asteroids because there's nothing much left where you're mining.
Just had a thought. Back in a sec.

I lied. I do have an overview set up for mining. Oops.
Anyway, here's what I'm seeing:

id say that conjunction with the tactical overlay you can get a decent spot by alt+clicking on a large roid in the general area, form there u can continue alt+clicking on things to get closer to the area u wanna set a BM

What does alt-clicking do?

Edited by: Peri Simone on 23/04/2011 11:01:19 That's a good point. I've gone back to the same belt and swung round so I'm looking at it from underneath. I assume you're seeing something like this:
https://picasaweb.google.com/csperry.2802/Misc#5598729273186312306
Tactical overlay helps a little, but not massively:
https://picasaweb.google.com/csperry.2802/Misc#5598729466365128066
If I now switch to my mining overview settings without the tactical overlay, I'm back to square one:
https://picasaweb.google.com/csperry.2802/Misc#5598729486081066690
But with mining overview and tactical overlay, it's a lot better:
https://picasaweb.google.com/csperry.2802/Misc#5598729525735071426
I guess that's the sort of thing you're aiming for?

All I do is book mark both ends of the belt, as they can be far from the warp-in.
I then set my Hulk's speed for about 60% and strip everything while constantly moving, until I reach the other end.
I trained for an interceptor just for bookmarking, but any frigate with a MWD will do. You can repackage them too, and carry them in the Hulk, then leave them at a station while you mine.

Most belts have a light background somewhere. I just hold both mouse buttons down (left first), zoom way out and twist my POV around until I've got the belt highlighted against whatever light there is.
That and using the tactical over view, alternating my POV above from above and below and zooming in and out.
I'll have to look at those over view settings. Mostly, I've just been using Default Mining.

Fitting a cheap frigate with a MWD and a survey scanner. Fly to one end of the belt. Head 14 km back. Bookmark. Target a roid 29 km in your direction. Fly there and bookmark. Rinse and repeat till you reach the other end of the belt. Worked fine for me, when mining was a valuable profession.
