Hey everyone I just started playing EVE about 2 weeks ago and I'm loving the experience so far. I got tired of the simplicity that many other mmo's out there use to lure people in and when I found EVE well its just my cup of tea and i'm really enjoying it!
Anyways onto my delimia, I'm at a crossroads really and unsure as to which path i'd like to go do to start. One path is Mining, I find it rather intresting and the aspect of being able to do multiple things while mining is pretty great to however, I've been hearing over and over again that mining is becoming less and less profitable due to bots ect ect not only that but I expect that as the game gets more and more popular with the release of the new expansion which is almost certain to happen, I feel that actually finding a good quality astroid field to mine in will be more of a hassle then anything. Obviously going down this road i'd be getting a Hulk which ultimately hinders my early game experience meaning that I'd only be able to mine and thats pretty much it.
The second path is more of a combat path, I've heard that you could make alot of money from Level 4 missions and I've found a battleship that is perfect for me as it has a caldari/gallente mix in the Rattlesnake. I really really like and want this ship however, i know that it'll take a long time to be able to effectively train it. The problem with this path is again the time to train it, which is obviously going to be pretty long and i'm okay with that really as long as I can get something to focus on in the short term and really I'm not sure what I should do....Should I rush to a battleship in this path or perhaps focus on getting a BattleCRuiser fully fitted in T2 and then worry about moving onto Battleship for each gallente/caldari and then get the rattlesnake and work on it from there.
Ultimately what i'm trying to do is maximize my early game fun while making as much money as possible. Both of these routes I feel are fun but I guess i'm just looking for some feedback or insight from an experienced player to help me make the right decision.

From a personal income point of view... between mining and running level 4's you really want to be running level 4's. Mining is (in my opinion) highly tedious and the skills don't transfer over to pvp should you need, or wish, to take part in some pew pew. Level 4 missioning may not be the BEST income per hour but it is certainly better than mining for profit.
If you genuinely love mining then carry on but I don't understand the fascination personally.

As for mining, it¦s OK if you¦re of the zen/relaxed mind persuasion. Ignore the Hulk for now. There are mining cruisers that get a nice bonus and getting into a retriever is quickly accomplished. The key to mining isn¦t ONLY the ship, it¦s actually the ability to refine and use the advanced mining lasers and their crystals.
And never underestimate the Veldspar!
Though you should really be asking these questions in your corp chat/forum. Try to join for example Eve University for the actual eve experience. ______________ Mal-¦Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-`Big damn heroes, sir.` Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

I tried both for quite some time. I found myself liking L4 missions better. Bounties get you lots of cash and for rouge drone missions, the salvage is amazing.
Plus if you hope to get into PVP or other combat related activities in the future the skill set is the same. You just need to fit your PVE ships with T2 stuff and add scramblers, nos, webs etc.

whichever path you choose mining is NOT the one to go.
Best bet is to run missions:
merlin/rifter ---> drake ---> tengu
not only will it help your industry but also the LP store is invaluable for implants at half price, not to mention storyline missions that also grant FREE implants.

to be blunt you make beter isk Kill mission running in emptire than you do mining in empire,
you also get loot that you can either reprocess or sell and salvage is a nice addon to the income stream.
.End of line.
If your too paranoid to play EvE. . . ...then your not paranoid enough to play EvE ----------------

Have you done all 5 career mission streams?
While training up for a rattlesnake, I suggest the following skip progression: Vexor -> Dominix. Pretty simple :)
Get into a Vexor, train up to be able to fit a T1 armor tank, then train for T2 light and medium drones. Once you have Drone Interfacing 5, train up to fly the Dominix and work towards sentry drones (skip heavy drones). Once you can field T2 sentry drones, train to fit a T2 shield tank, then train Caldari Battleships and get yourself into a Rattlesnake. Finish off your Gallente and Caldari battleship skills, then work on missiles if you want more firepower.
In the meantime, make sure you run the career missions, and consider doing some PI for income and astrometrics/exploration for fun.
And above all else, try to make friends. Talk to folks in local, talk to folks in your NPC Corp, check the recruitment forums. Having friends to share activities with makes the game much more interesting! -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

EVE is a long-term game and you need to approach it with that mindset. My advice is to enjoy the game experence and find things out for yourself, rather than simply mimic what others have learned... EVE is about the journey, not just arriving at the destination of a Hulk or Rattlesnake or whatever. By all means learn from others, but make your own informed decisions.
You can do both mining and mission running (and a host of other stuff) if you train a broad spectrum of skills. Whilst specialising gets you to one place faster, the game will be more varied and enjoyable if you skill up as a generalist first, try out all the game has to offer, then pick what you want to skill-max-out from an informed position.
With a lot of stuff, training to level 4 gets you most of the way there, going to level 5 takes a disproportionate amount of time for the additional benefit gained. You can level 4 a lot of different things in the time taken to level 5 one skill.
There's a hell of a lot of detail in EVE that will keep you absorbed for a long time in whatever you do. Different ships capabilities and special bonuses, weapon types, ammo types, shield and armour tanking, da-di-da. Take it one step at a time and the game will suck you in for years. But find your own way, don't spoil the experience by simply copying everyone else.

Soundtrack to Mining, or you can pursue other areas of the game!
Personally mining aint for me, but it's you $15 per so do what you like. That's the beauty of the EvE Sandbox.
beware of scammers & get in a good Corp asap is the best advice I can give e new player.
Good Luck & stick with it!

Mining no,
Mission to START yes but if you can really tolerate doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over.....like the most repetitive thing ever.
Once you get your SP up, can fly an array of ships including bc's with t2 weapons and tank you either want to aim at doing WH stuff (anyone who says other wise is an idiot)
Doing WH stuff will teach you a lot of stuff.
Ship fits ISK making PvP, there is always nullsecs > rifters > die > repeat Flying as a group Maintaining a home for you and your corp Defending that home Scanning, which is useful for an array of things such as solo plex running
It is also very fun while learning all this.
Basically do not get stuck in the rut of missioning, you will either get bored OR end up botting/rmt'in like the rest of the missioning community. I tend to make my ISK via different methods, I do simple WH sites, I scan lowsecs for quick and easy plex's, I burn some rats in nullsec with my pvp ship, pvp loot is mostly there as well.
There are loads of ways, just do not get stuck doing it the same way or you will get bored.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Ive made my mind up and am going to go the route of missioning for now. I will eventually plan to branch out to other areas of the game such as trading and maybe even some mining down the road. Once again thanks for everything you guys have helped alot!

Being an mmo, having fun is mostly dependent on the people you fly with. mining, trading, missioning, pvp, everything is more fun in a group. find a nice corp that will help you, gives advice, takes you on. and then whatever you do, itll be fun

Edited by: Julyan Fox on 24/04/2011 12:08:57 Actually I had the same problem than you when I started. I was also interested about mining but couldn't decide what to do. Most ppl would say mining is garbage do missions. In the end I stood on my initial idea, which was getting a toon that could mine.
After 30 days of subscription. I fly a retriever which is a middle sized mining barge, and am in my way to the hulk which is the top notch mining ship. I got a perfect refine on pyroxeres which is the best ore to farm in high-sec. I also have a Drake in which I run lv 3 combat missions to grind standings with factions to get perfect refines and jump clones, and even have a noctis which is a specialized ship to speed salvage my missions. Mining will make you enough ISK to get all those things if you do it right.
And I'm having fun. Mining will let you plenty of opportunities to do other things like min-maxing your PI while still doing ISK/h, trading, producing, planing your stuff, or semi afking.
On the longterm your mining abilities will always have some use.
My two cents.
