I remember reading something the other day about the refresh of high sec ice belts being turned off. This would cause the belts to eventually be empty for good. I cannot remember where I heard this and I don't know if there is any truth to it. I ran a search but all I found was irrelevant links.
Does anyone know anything about this? Could you let me know where this was discussed?

I think it is a very old rumor. I've read it before, but have never found anything to substantiate it.

We've never yet been able to mine an ice block to extinction, but we'll give it a shot one day. We do know that if you mine one enough it'll get physically smaller, but it regenerates thousands of cubes every night. As far as I can tell you cannot get rid of ice fields. If you managed to mine a block out the odds are good it'd just respawn over downtime --------------------------- Full Explanation of the Industry Index System |

I don't think anyone is going to mine out an ice belt. What I'm talking about is if CCP changes the belt so they don't regenerate at downtime. It would still take some time but eventually the belt would be gone. I know I read this somewhere but I cannot recall where. Does anyone have any clue?

I heard about this 3 years ago, its all rumor, honestly I wouldn't worry about it, mostly because if ccp kills ice belts, the mackinaw becomes useless. Ccp won't do it.

There are places to mine ice besides high-sec, you know.

This pops up from time to time. Read the first news article, but notice the date. People miss the date of that news article all the time and then act as if it was happening now spreading the rumor around that ice fields are not repopulating.

Yeah it did happen a long time ago. Ice belts were in 0.8 systems. They turned off the refresh so the belts would disappear from very high sec systems. Ice belts only exist in 0.7 systems and below now a days. I tell you what sonny, when I was your age they had them ice belts in 0.8 systems and we had to mine them without shoes in the snow! Revelations expansion I think? Can't remember.

Back when mining wasn't such a novelty for some, there were indeed more Hi Sec ice belts.
Many a day I spent ice-mining in Ruvas... then those days came to an end ... no more ice in 0.8 systems... yar... and scraping up every last ISK because a HULK cost at least 600mil.
You guys have it EEEEEEEE-ZZZZZZZZZ these days, easy by far.
UNLESS all POS fuel production gets reworked into PLANETARY INTERACTION, the ice belts aren't going anywhere.
OTOH, nuking the ice belts, moving all POS fuel production over Planetary Interaction (supplemented with hidden sites like "comets" that provide the same raw planetary materials as oh, I don't know, ICE PLANETS) would be a great way to motivate players into using DUST to actually attack PI installations and affect the prices of POS FUEL.
Bwhahahahaha.... be thankful i'm not a DEV.

Noob question: Do ice belts show up as signatures when scanning or are they actually in the belts? I've never seen ice but was curious to give it a try.
Thanks.

They are their own belts. If you have Asteroid Belts turned on in your overview they will show up as Ice Field. (i.e. "Kino IV - Ice Field 1") using the same icon as asteroid belts.
