IMO it's harshly asymmetrical and frankly strange shape is why it's my favorite hull. >.>
It's ceased to be ugly to me. It's now ugly-cool. I am proud to fly any of the various Moa hulls I own.
I ****ing hate the Drake hull.

To my mind there are 3 categories:
Ugly: Moa, Dominix, Bellicose, Celestis, Blackbird, Revenant, Imicus, Osprey.
Stupid looking: Moa, Incursus, Bellicose, Imicus, Maller, Sycthe, Vagabond, Tempest
These are excusable to a degree, what is unforgivable is ugly and stupid looking
Moa, Bellicose, Imicus.

Edited by: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov on 05/05/2011 15:34:25 I think that a certain kind of 'ugly' is quite acceptable.
IRL, look at the American A-10 Thunderbolt. It's not a conventionally pretty plane, but its brutish looks make it seem fearsome and formidable. It looks downright dangerous.
All I'm saying is that when 'ugly' is combined with other attributes it isn't necessarily a bad thing, and can even make a ship appear more intimidating.
I agree though that there are some ugly ships in Eve whose appearances just don't appear to have any redeeming qualities.

I like all of the ships to a degree. But most of them could use major texture overhauls.

Just bought a Raven for mission running, and Jesus, it looks even more hideous than in model viewer. Please CCP, I beg of you, make us a gift with first Incarna, redesign it, I'm sure you'll be able to save it's unique look and make it fit with new Caldari design (fighter/fb's, Tengu, Scorpion) .

Moa is Mr Ugliest by far, it looks like a turkey someone drove over. Repeatedly.
I'd rather that they made the Tengu, Omen, Apoc, Blackbird hulls prettier though as I don't fly any Moa class ship anyway.

As someone pointed out above, this is more of a two-part deal - shape and skin.
Before the graphics upgrade a couple of years ago, the Domi used to be really, really ugly. Both a space-turd shape and a nondescript skin.
But now that the skin has more detail, it actually looks quite nice. It's a blob shape overall, sure, but it has lots of intriguing bits and pieces on it, quite pretty to spin.
Similarly, some of the Caldari skins just look old, out of proportion (giant "cockpits"), etc., whereas the actual shapes are quite cool for the Caldari concept - angular, modular, pragmatic-looking.

A few of the ugliest ships i can think of right now are: imicus ibis moa bellicose
I really dislike the drake design as well, but wouldnt qualify it as needing a redesign. And there are a lot more ugly t1 frigate designs i cant be bothered to remember the names off, but noone flies those things longer then a week anyway lol

It makes me sad that the Moa is in almost all of these posts, whereas the Blackbird and Drake, which I personally think are both slightly worse, are only in two or three.
Leave the Moa alone guys. If you think it's ugly, don't fly it.
Or fly a Gila instead. I swear, even just palette swapping and adding some (rather pointless) camo really made the hull for me.

I think it's extremely ugly and I don't fly it because of that. If it looked better I'd get myself an Onyx. No way I'm flying that .. thing .. now!
As I don't want to be restricted I'd rather see CCP change the Moa hull and make it a viable - aesthetic - alernative to a Broadsword.

Don't change the moa!
That everyone hates it is a lovely thing.
A proper Moa is beatiful for producing "OMGWTFISTHATDOINGWHYISAMOAATTACKINGARGH!" moments.
No one expects the Spanish inquisition ... or a Moa applying 500dps:

Perfect for being the 'surprise DPS ship' when your gang tackles a Drake. Top damage dealer on a KM using a Moa? Classic.

At worst, when ships have poor textures (thinking Dominix), the grandeur of size and scale is lost since there are no reference points with which we can identify- a Bridge, docking bays, whatever.
Most of the best looking ships in game are just the opposite; on the Harpy or Rifter we can clearly see a cockpit location, and picture the scale from that. The Incursus is an example of a great model ship, yet awful texture-intuitively it looks and feels like a 20 foot long ship... 82m, just short of a football field? Give me a break!
As for asymmetrical ship design, there's nothing wrong with it, except maybe that in Eve asymmetrical seems to be the norm, not the exception- 3 races favor it, 1 doesn't- and I'm sure I'm not the only Eve player who was frustrated starting off with the choice of balanced ships/slave trader backstory.
To the guy that said there's beauty in ugliness, sure. But I'd say most eve ships totally miss that point, there still needs to be a semblance of practicality.
AH-64 Ugly, yet balanced and looks badass.
Raven Whuuutt?
To those that say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I can't tell you what you find appealing, but I would guess if people were actually honest with themselves, they usually like these non-traditional designs only out of a desire for non-conformity; eg, if everyone thought Amy Winehouse was the most attractive woman on earth, those same people would suddenly take a liking to the Heidi Klums of the world.

Gallente ships range from mildly interesting (Hyperion) to visually offensive (Domi looks like a piece of crap). That organic feel overall doesn't look good to me, too topsy-turvy.
There's also something that really bothers me about the Harbinger on low shader settings. The texture looks all screwed up, just dull and ugly.
Minmatar ships... do they really need to be that rusty-looking? I know they're utilitarian, but is there any good reason for the coloration? Maybe the Minnies don't do much maintenance so the outermost layer of armor gets rusted, I dunno.

Gallente ships are a rather mixed bag, we have the sexiest hulls*, and some of the biggest failures. I'd like to add Iterons to the usual suspects, especially III and V are just terrible.
Vexor has also poor texture, otherwise it is cool. Please get rid of the stupid camo paint on the Gallente Navy editions!
And like someone mentioned, every ship in game really deserves a unique hull - reusing t1 hulls for all variants feels lazy and unrealistic. They could follow the same design cues, but be evolved versions. Forget cockpits and windows, these are pod ships. Ships need love to be on par with Incarna stuff!
* Mega, Hype, Incursus, Nyx, Tristan, Brutix (it's badass, I have one just for the looks as it's a nearly useless ship) and the best design in game: Maulus. Ominous, balanced, sleek. <3

Another ugly ships thread eh?
The Moa is the worst cruiser, along with the other Caldari cruisers. The Celestis and Exequror are both horrid as well though.
A couple of the Minmatar frigates are horrible, but the hands down worst frigate is the current Helios. The Imicus is bad, but the lighter coloured silver and green skin on the Helios make it looks even worse. Odd considering the same colour scheme on the Malus (one of the best frigs imo) worked fine when that ship was used as the base model.
Certain ships do need a spruce up though. Raven looks awesome and bird of prey like, but does need tweaking and reskinning. Vexor needs a high res skin and more detail.
I don't get the Apoc hate in this thread though, the Golden Banana looks amazing, and hopefully CCP will add the missing thruster effects at some point (just underneath the main top thruster are 3 horizontal ones that lack fx). --------------------------------- Go Web! Go! |

There are so many awful stuff can't name them all. I'll just let here the Dominix and the Proteus look has the worst ever in game
Those I most like?
-Nyx sticks to the img we can expect from some spaceship, awesome enough to feed your account and train for it no matter the performances.
-Megathron weird form when you look at it from the front, but when you look it from the side he's just splendid, you want one of these
-Thorax hull, that one deserves a lot of "sexy" names but still awesome design, unfortunately their performances are plain crap
-Brutix hull, while the base one has a nice look and paint job, even if it can easily be improved, the Eos and Astarte paint job is plain crap has the performances, but is all related to the magnificent awesome idea of blasters mechanics like in almost every Gallente hull
-Tengu, with the good subs this ship looks awesome, have one just for it's look! (yes I'm lying)
-Loki, like it enough to name it
-Armageddon, with the Bhaalgorn paint job he's aggressive enough to please
-The incoming Minmatar Battleship, trained Minmatar battleships at 4 just for that one

I'm really glad that CCP doesn't listen to those cries of "ugly, change it!", because taste is subjective, and I for one love the Exequror hull and wish it was a better ship so that you could actually use it (besides the Oneiros of course).
I don't think that spaceships have to be perfectly symmetric to look good, that's why the Thorax is also one of my favourite hulls.
Brutix is sexy, too. Myrm I hated when I started playing, but it grew on me, a lot. Curiously also the Moa-hull did, I don't hate the looks of it that much anymore. The Caldari line-up remains the ugliest line-up in game though The Raven, omfg, the ugly, it hurts.
I also like the Cruor and the Ashimmu a lot. For sexiest overall it's a tie between Armageddon and Machariel.
Oh wait, forgot the Providence. I wish that hull wasn't a freighter, it's drop dead gorgeous.
