Hopefully sat in a corner facing the wall eating humble pie. And with some luck and good judgement, they will never be allowed out ever again.
Who would have thought that the catalyst for loving these forums was to get CCP to try and replace them? Especially after that second probing abomination they came up with.
A lesson for the future I guess.

Well CCP was kind enough to let us add signature images as well for a few hours before they took it all down again.
I must admit it is easier to add signature images on this forum though.

Bets are on :
A) They're currently making it shinier, with even more blings blings and Christmas light extras that when they open for the second time, they hope to dazzle the players with jawdropping effects, that words will fail many of them and turn them into zombies.
B) They're ripping out some of the suspect plumbing, replacing them with solid works; additionally, re-visiting the forum ergonomics, functionality and addressing general feedback. When the open the second time, it'll be smart, fully functional and feels like a proper upgrade from the old forum.
C) They're waiting for things to blow over. In the meantime, scramble up a couple of quick solid security fixes, then release it the second time with negligible front-end changes from the first release. Afterwards, cover their ears and run for the bomb-shelters.
My bet is on A.

Firmly seconded.
Doing something like switching forum types can have a DEADLY effect on your community.
I often visit a website, LiveLeak, which used to have a comments section that worked similarly to Eve Forums 1.0. They switched to something that looks quite like Eve Forums 2.0, and lost 90% of their visitors in a single week.
CCP: If you're reading this - I suspect that changing the "look and feel" of the forum at this point might be a terrible mistake.
edit: Ask yourselves this: How many complaints did you get about the current forum?
How about the new one? :)

Probably true. CCP has hoodwinked its paying customers into accepting junk EVE deliverables while CCP employees drive around in their newly acquired BMWs and Land Rovers and work on separate IP ventures.

Now that you mention it, the same can be said for Digg. I used to casually run up that site until they screwed the layout with Java/AJAX whatnots. Lol ... now they've got an AJAX freemode that's similar to the old layout and feel. A patchwork solution on a disastrous upgrade.
Another notable is Metacritic. It used to be easy to list out all the PC games releases in a single page ... right until they upgraded the layout (with more bling-blings). That's where things went to pieces and you had to slog through multiple pages to get to where you wanted. Now, fortunately, they seemed to have fixed that after a shortwhile.
One of the best website that I'd ever had the pleasure of reading is http://techreport.com/ Simple, uncluttered and the fonts & layout are pleasant to look at.

Feel free to argue with this article (Jul 2010-Sep 2010). Unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat, your statement is pure fluff.
Also keep in mind, WHY the AJAX freemode option exists for Digg. Good implementations will have no need for a dual-mode usage. I won't comment on the rest as mitigating measures were placed and they ADDRESSED the issues. That stopped the bleeding.
Don't get into the mistaken presumption that people are resistant to change just because they hate change. On the contrary, change is good, provided the replacement is at least equivalent or exceeds the expectations of what they are replacing - not make life more difficult. The Digg upgrade did just that, in retrospect.
As for a bunch of angry people, the general sentiments are negative, just by looking at the amount of noise it generated across this forum and all the other forums. CCP calls it the "Forum Whine Index" (FWI). When something generates that much noise, you know it's not just a "bunch of angry people". What idiot proceeds with the implementation without addressing many of the concerns, dismissing them as ... "oh, it's impossible to avoid, there will be angry people resistant to the change". Fix it later? Sure, but it didn't even get that far and CCP's history in iterations will elicit derisional laughter from the average player.
Now here's the thing, CCP as an entertainment service provider cannot afford to **** off its userbase each and every time they change something. It's cumulative. EVE players have long memories. The better way doing things is to minimize the noise, address the issues in a timely manner (both pro-actively and post-implementation) and come to a smart compromise if necessary.
You want to know my #1 issue with the new forum? The layout and colours. It was sufficient enough to put me off. Then came the guy that created a 3rd-party Stylish layout that addressed that issue in the FIRST DAY! From there on, I was slightly miffed with the rest of the issues, but it was at least workable and I was content.
