I would like my fellow capsuleers to share the origens, the etymology, the meanings of your names. In my travels I find some very interesting names. I would like to know how you came by them and what they mean. I will start with myself. I am Ston of ancient times, long cloned before the time when all things changed. Some of you who are also of ancient origens will know me by my connection with another ancient space-faring family and by my bride's name T'Pring. She has long passed as she was not cloned, but I remain. Momaki is but a name taken to fit with my adopted Caldari and Achura culture of this recent age. I am Ston Momaki Who are you?

Names are given, not taken.
You can call yourself Lord or CEO, but it is just pretension until others attach the same meaning to it as you do
My name was given in jest oweing to my prosthetics. It would be an insult to my parents to take the name 'Spoon Thumb' over that which they gave me, but rather it is a mark that I have become something more than my parents' son that others choose to call me by that name (however banal it may seem on the surface)

Well alright then I guess if yer askin'
So my name is actually Sam Roden (no relation to the president) but I am an archeologist so I decided to carry on a tradition of choosing a name based on an old spaceport. One of the most famous archeologist ever was named Indiana.
I found this old belt buckle with a picture of a bridge and the name San Francisco on it. I liked the name so thats what I registered on my pilots license.
Though I guess I misspelled it.. oh well no body I ever talked to knows anything about the place.

Mer.da.neth
In ancient Amarrian the syllables in my name hold the following meanings:
meranger; angry; grim mernorth(wind); storm wind; violent storm
dabeset, to; besiege, to; hold, to; danear, to be; protect, to; shadow, to; surround, to; with
nethproud; vain
As for its exact meaning of its combination, I'll leave that up to the reader.

Farel dates back to very old times. I am pretty sure it was already that name when the Nefantars were still living with their brethen Matari. Though I have absolutely no clue on what it comes from.
As for my firstname Lyn, diminutive of Lynara, I have found several clues leading to very old languages meanings, but it looks quite shady :
- lyn : thunder
- lynn/linne : lake, waterfall

My first name, as many of you have probably guessed, is Amarish, based off some holy being or somesuch. My family name is some old Caldari-Gallente bastardization; its origins are as blurred as the intermingling of the two cultures.
Now my Ji name, well, I'll keep that private. ------------ Lum Gen Seriphyn Inhonores FDU Commanding Officer, Eleutherian Guard |

Jaroth in a slang of Matari means "sharp blade", while the DuMont name is an ancient pre-Eden name, that was a typical commoner name. This name is assumed however, because my slavers didn't exactly hand me a birth certificate. Never has the heart of a Minmatar felt such tyranny as the unveiling of Vitoc. My name, well its actually a little interesting.
Math'ra - The male son of Athra, it is an honourable name for those of ancient Athran heritage. Hiede - The family name, derived from a longer and older name that has been all but lost since the Kingdom was founded many an age ago.
I have a few other names, but that happen to be quite private.

Aasakaa (Eh-sa-ka) suffered from a small stammer as a child, so she called herself at first Ss-akaa and went by that name until recently.
Of late, she goes by the nickname of 'Kaa' which was a gift bestowed by a certain FDU General who has a neck fetish (and, I suspect, a foot fetish) but I shall not embarrass him by naming him here.
Amun is shortened from and derived from her paternal Krusual tribal clan-name Amenakuu (Aa-men-aa-kuu) 'Of (original community unknown) the eastern continent of Ameinaka' (Four) -a planet in the Ortner constellation.

Fyral: was my fathers name, and in the tradition of my tribe that became my last name.
Daemeon is a fairly old name although the exact spelling of mine seems to be a variant. It means "he who tames and subdues" my parents gave me the name since I was born shortly after my clan had relocated to a new planet.

Ryven is derived from old roots, and means "split" or "severed"or "divided.". Krennel is my own alteration on the name Crenelle, taken from a Gallente man who was a sort of surrogate father, having been orphaned early. My birth name was Ryven Haijikioten, but the meaning of that name escapes me, and the parents I got it from were war criminals and ne'er-do-wells, and I haven't spent time dwelling on it. I took my callsign from the name of an obscure Hedionite monk, who wrote a few rare volumes of religious ideas that I found interesting once.
Knowing this writer's name saved my life once, in an odd occurrence I won't get into here, long before the pod was around.
When the time came to leave my old life behind, I thought the name had a nice ring to it.
As a bonus, lovers of obscure Articles of Faith smile when I am introduced to them. Instant conversation starter.

[15]
Edited by: Ava Starfire on 28/04/2011 14:28:52 My actual name, Avlynka, was shortened to a more pronouncable "Ava" by the clerk who filled in the final information when I received my pilot's license. Avlynka, in the Sebiestor dialect spoken by my clan, literally translates to "child (born) of winter". Understandably, most simply refer to me as "Ava".
Starfire, more correctly Star-Fire, is the name of my clan, once again, used by the clerk in place of Surionen, my surname. I have no idea what meaning, if any, my surname bears; we believe names like this were given to our ancestors by the Amarr, as it is certainly not Matari in origin.
Edit: It is pronounced "av-lunk-ah" if anyone wonders.

Posted - 2011.04.28 22:07:00 -
[21]
My family name has been around longer than anyone can remember. No-one knows what Ixiris means anymore, or where it came from. "Andreus" isn't actually my birth name, but when I was shipped off to the Centre for Advanced Studies when I was twelve, no-one could pronounce it, so they gave me a Gallentean nickname instead. "Andreus" is a very, very old Gallentean name (there is a lot of dispute as to exactly where it comes from - but current anthropology suggests it probably came from either Morthane or Lyace) whose meaning is uncertain, but it's something about rivers.
I found I actually much prefered the nickname to my old given name, so it stuck, and... certain events that occured later in my life compelled me to keep it. When I turned 18, I had my name legally changed, and that's the name that appears on my pilot's liscence. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Boma Airaken
White Song Celestial Imperative
|
Posted - 2011.04.29 06:40:00 -
[23]
Baatsu-achur naming traditions are very different from Saisio-born or loyalist traditions. The child is generally given a first name that is more a nickname than anything else. We do not name our children until they can utter sounds AND walk. When these two events occur at the same time the family or Kyaraban elders will then give them a first name based on their antics.
I received the named Boma, which is slang for a doting grandmother who spoils children because I was always praising and sharing with children in my age group.
Our tribe or clan names are given to us based on the system the Kyaraban had taken up residence in at the time of these events. Hence Airaken.
To many it seems simple and almost trashy, but we value this naming system greatly. It is a sign of character first and foremost, and respect to the stars second.

Korvan Hraldir Davanev
|
Posted - 2011.04.30 20:13:00 -
[25]
Korvan - fairly standard Thukker first name, dates back to the days we wandered Matar and relates to a pick-like weapon, used from Horseback by the nomad tribes.
Hraldir - Originally the first name of the founder of my family and a hero of our clan from the early days of the Thukker migration from Matar into space. Now used as a title to indicate either the head of the family or a family member who has been recognised as a Chief within the Clan or Tribe. I am not head of the Davanev family, my Uncle has that honour, but as a Capsuleer and eldest son of the previous family head have Cheiftain status within the Clan.
Davanev - My family name. The Davanev line is one of the older family groups within the Hrakan Clan of the Thukker tribe.

My full name is Yakiya Verin Gariova Hakatain.
Yakiya should be obvious, it's only the single most popular first name for a boy child in the State. After Admiral Tovil-Toba.
A "Verin" is a type of tree noted for its strong, sturdy wood which is ideal for construction. In Caldari mythology, the demon embodying the vice of haste was called "Verene" too, which was an apt name considering I was born ten days early.
"Gariova" was my grandfather's name, and he in turn was named after the captain of the freighter that evacuated my great-grandparents from the Homeworld.
As for Hakatain - the name is a combination of two much older names dating back to the third dynasty of the Raata Empire, when General Toriv Hakaat won the battle of the Wiyrk fields and was rewarded with marriage into the Imperial family through a wedding to the Emperor's cousin, Lady Takain. The combined house became known as Hakaatkain, which over the centuries shortened to simply "Hakatain".
Hakatain is listed as the eighty-third most common family name in the Caldari State, and Verin was the hundred and seventeenth most popular male name for a child in the year of my birth. as of YC.112 it is now the ninety-second most popular male name for a child in the State. There are approximately four thousand "Yakiya" Hakatains in the State, and sixty-two "Yakiya Verin" Hakatains, but I am the only Yakiya Verin Gariova Hakatain. -
- Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain.

Not precisely etymology, but I'll share the story of my name. It is bound to become public knowledge sooner or later, so here it is:
I was born a slave. My mistress named me Djek Ferro. Needless to say, I did not remain a slave. I was a cunning little bastard, so I orchestrated my escape back in YC 85...when I was twelve. I stowed away from my home on the Penirgman IV station in a Federation-bound Iteron captained by Etienne Renoir with enough vitoc to see me through till the vitoxin in my body dissipated.
Since the Gallentians who subsequently took me in had trouble pronouncing Djek, they called me Jacques. When Etienne later forged the papers necessary to adopt me as his heir, I inherited my "legal" name: Jacques Bastiat Renoir.*
When I began my studies and operations in the Republic, I adopted the alias Jack. It suits me, and has stuck. As for the rest of my call-sign, it is my nickname among my colleagues. Whether it originates my physical mutilation or "out-there" ideas, they don't comment. As soon as I undergo my first cloning, only one reason will be applicable.
*I only share this because Etienne is now deceased, I am a capsuleer, and so we both are beyond legal consequence from Imperial or Federal authorities regarding the matter.
