So you want to know how cloaking works....and how it actually can help you....or not.
First, lets dispel any myths about cloaking and contraband....CLOAKING DOES "NOT" HELP YOU KEEP ILLEGAL ITEMS HIDDEN FROM SURVIELLENCE OFFICERS. In laymens terms, don't run contraband and think cloaking will save you...
....here are the facts on cloaking. We tested everything with two very good and stable computers side by side useing two Apocolypse battleships and a Prophecy Battle Cruiser and the Amarr Covert Ops kit (ship and module)
1. You cannot activate any other module while cloaked
2. You must wait upto 30 seconds to target lock anything after uncloaking. (the better your cloaking skill, the more you reduce target lock activation timer after uncloaking)
3. You must wait 30 seconds to use the cloaking module again after activation. (30 sec timer)
4. You will take a 90% speed penalty when useing cloaking on any ship except the covert ops ship WITH the covert ops cloaking module
5. The current going rate for the Covert Ops ship and Covert Ops cloaking module kit is around 40-50 million ISK (As of Feb. 9th, 2005)Someone down below states they got theirs for 29 mill so its good to shop around.
6. Think of cloaking as "scouting" only.
7. You must uncloak to jump or dock. You cannot jump through systems cloaked or enter docks while cloaked.
8. Your ship becomes completely invisible to others even though you will see it as a clear morphing ship. Other players cannot visually see you once cloaked even when looking close.
9. Once you are target locked by a player or NPC rat, you "cannot" cloak
10. You can cloak while someone is "trying" to get a target lock on you or you are locking them....once again....once a target lock is establisked, you CANNOT cloak.
11. The Covert ops ships and Covert Ops module for cloaking are used to achieve no speed penalties while cloaked. You must have both the "covert ops ship" and a "covert ops ship cloaking module" (special cloaking module). These two items combined will allow you to fly cloaked without receiveing any speed penalties.
12. Once again no modules can be used while cloaked...no guns, no targeting, no anything except flying cloaked.....it is all about scouting
13. You CANNOT cloak while you are within 2km (2,000 meters) from a static object like a gate or dock. Once you are cloaked however, you can fly upto anything. You can un-cloak and immediately jump or dock.
14. When you cloak or un-cloak you make the same sounds as you would if coming through a gate and uncloaking to go to your next jump when flying normally. So players can "hear" you if they know what they are listening for when you cloak or un-cloak.
----------------------------------------
I will try to come by and update this with information relating to being cloaked and splash damage / combat in area once we have done actual testing.....basically covering if you can actually be damaged while cloaked.
Hope this helps newer players understand cloaking better and beat those myths down a bit.....
We use cloaking to avoid trouble while hauling (works very well in low sec space when used with patience). We also use cloaking to spy and camp and trap pirate players. Of course the cloaked ship is just doing what we discussed ...SCOUTING.
I personnally have sat silent and quiet and been in the middle of huge battles enjoying the show from beginning to end between players. I have witnessed more interesting things in EvE while cloaked then I have ever running with out a cloaking module. Things I would have never seen if I wasn't. We value cloak at a very high level. Ecpecially when traveling or doing operations in deep 0.0 space.
Most of all it has saved my bacon so many times hauling, I cannot count.

Thanks for this Bob, answers a few questions for me. what I would like to know is, after coming out of cloak, how long is it before you can activate a device? Ie, using a stargate, or docking at a station, etc.
So could you effectivly warp into a gate camp, turn on cloak before being locked, fly over to gate, then quickly turn off cloak and make the stagate jump without being shot at? -----------------------------

ok good question.....
You cannot cloak near any static object like a gate or station within 2km....you must be at least 2km from any solid object to cloak.....
Now...once cloaked you can fly right upto anything...uncloak and jump or dock....
the time delay after uncloaking is ONLY for targeting.....so yes you can uncloak and immediately dock or jump
hope that clears up your questions....
*NOTE: I updated the orginal post to reflect this information...

I thought you would automatically uncloak if you flew within 2km of anything such as a stargate, ship, roid or can? (Or if flew around you..)
If not, there goes my "great" idea for protecting POS from BMing cloakships using a few strategically placed secure cans. POS really should pod people.. |

Actually, Your ship will decloak or refuse to cloak if you get with 2 km of Anything. Ships, Players, Cans, Roids, Stations, Gates will all decloak you.
Which is quite annoying. ---------------------------

ill do my best to test this to verify it tonight....
I know you cannot cloak while in 2km range of anything. The question is will it decloak you.....it's not that I don't trust above post, I just wish to test it completely first to be sure....maybe some how I mis interpetted what I did in earlier testing.....
I hope it has helped someone

assumption is the mother of all evils.....first I did not BUY my covert ops kit....it was given to me as a gift out of gratitude for services rendered when times where tough for someone and I bailed them out long ago and saved their skin.........second, i looked in three regions and markets for pricing today before i posted this....I have had my kit for several weeks now....
I gave an average price from the market today is all....I am very glad you saved 10 to 15 mill...I hope others do also....it is always wise to shop around in EvE.
Maybe you could point players to where you got yours for that price...region?...player?....escrow?....CCP market?....friends?......
Throw them a bone bro.....letting everyone know you got a good price on your kit was awesome....but it didn't help this thread really....cept to point out that someone else supposedly got ripped off....but since my kit was free your assumptions were inaccurate:) ....
thanks for posting though, all of you.....if anyone can add anything else to this thread please do...all input is welcome.....

OK... I will let you guys into a little secret here
I have discovered two rules for decloaking:
1 - You will insta decloak by players or rats and only these items afaik
2 - All other objects will decloak you but only if the cloak reactivation cycle is hit. Eg iirc the cloak activation cycle is 30 seconds so it is possible to activate it at 2.1km away from a gate and pass straight through that gate and past it the other side (Im not talking about jumping just flying past it). As long as you can cover the 4.1km in 30 seconds you will not decloak. IF you are still within the barrier range of 2km at the 30second mark you will then decloak. This is the same for all objects except players and rats as mentioned above in 1.
The rules above ALSO apply whilst warping, so you can mostly warp through planets and stay cloaked ... but sometimes ... doh!
Oh and one more freebie for ya
(this was last tested before the last cloak patch where things changed - not retested yet)
if you get forceably decloaked by the cycle timer when next to a gate, when you jump you will still have to wait for the 30 second timer before you can cloak again. If you fly up to a gate and decloak yourself and then jump you can then instantly cloak again the other side
I have a bible and setup of golden rules which I discovered through experimentation, I would think you guys need to experiment and test for yourselves .... decloaking next to an enemy fleet is not the best thing to have happen in a ship made of paper and cardboard
Happy cloaking guys!

Yes you can but there are serious limitations.
A hauler is already really slow. When you cloak you speed gets dropped by a major %, something like 90% so you are effectivley stationary. Usefull but dont dream of using it to avoid rats as the rats will just fly to your last known position, of which, as you have traveled so little distance they will bump you out of cloak.

i've had my buzzard for some time now, used it many times to spy on people, search for safespots or just travel into and out of 0.0 ....as far as i can tell, the cloaking is still a little buggy, where sometimes you will forcibly decloak when warping to a gate and sometimes you can run into them and remain cloaked. (i'm talking travelling using insta's which essentially put you on top of the gate) so cloak with caution. ------------------------------------------------

Of course, you could ignore my research (as detailed in my above post) and carry on thinking its a buggy

As stated above if your activation timer rolls through, to keep you cloaked, and you are within 2km of something you will de-cloak......this is not a bug.....this is the cloaking module working as intended....with its activation timer pulling a 2km check before activating.....
thus if you are flying cloaked and are near an object then in fact the cloaking module can no longer keep you cloaked....and when it trys to run its activation cycle, ever 30 seconds, it will check to see if you are near anything and if you are, it will not keep you cloaked...
so once cloaked, you have 30 seconds to fly like mad to as close as you can get before the activation timer rolls around....and checks to see if you are within 2km before it will hold your cloak

i'm not sure your concept of an 'activation timer' is accurate. you presume that a covert ops cloak works like any other module which when turned on, cycles for a predetermined amount of time and shuts off (unless put on auto) drawing a set amount of energy from the capacitor per cycle. a cloak doesn't work that way, it uses no energy and has no cycle. it is either on or off. the only timer it has is the 30sec. re-activation timer, which won't allow you to turn it back on after you've turned it off for another 30 seconds. but i'll try and do some tests with mine hopefully later tonight. otherwise quality information though. ------------------------------------------------

Check the properties of it mate And all my testing seems to prove my theory correct. Also, i'm not the only person who has come to the same conclusion.
Try it .... you can fly straight past most objects as long as you time it right.

i have checked the properties. this makes no mention of activation time / duration as in other modules, it only mentions the re-activation delay time of 30 secs. like i said though, i'll mess around with mine when i get home tonight. ------------------------------------------------

Im positive we have been hunting characters (seen in local) that then tell us they are covert ops.
I definetley see myself in local when cloaked.
