Supposedly Eve supports Alien Fx, however no where can I find what it does so I know what this or that flashing means. Really hasn't been an issue, but today I logged into one of my alts parked in Jita for a price check and had something setting off the FX. Foes anyone have a list of what is what?
I've googled for hours looking, all I find is complaints that it doesn't do this or that, no list of what it does do.
btw, I have a M11X r if that matters. yeah what ever |

It could be either of two things. One, alien LEDs are entirely too alien or two, consumer electronics has gotten too ridiculous in its conquest of gaudy design.

AlienFX is basically a set of LEDs to light up your AlienWare PC whatever colour you choose.
They're not really that functional other than being pretty looking, and certain games can use them to display stuff from in game, such as your health (turning from green to read as you die for example) and stuff like that.
It's fitted as stock to all their M1xx series laptops and all their desktops based off of their Area 51 chassis :
Here's my M11x when I had it set up red, to give you an idea of what the deal is.
There's lots of videos on youtube of people who've done random stuff like writing winamp plugins and suchlike for it.

Can't some people just keep their unsolicited opinions to themselves? So you don't like Alienware/Dell, who cares? That isn't what the OP was asking...so yeah, please, keep it to yourself.
As for FX, I'm not sure...I think it's cool, but I can't say anything about how it's supposed to work with Eve.

Build your own LED systems into your pc and hook it up using Logitech keyboard software (like G15+ series).

Only thing Eve ever did here was turn off the lighting completely - making it bloody hard to see the capacitive strip buttons. That was it.
M17xR1 & M17xR2 same thing. Alienware/Dell community rep on the forums couldn't get it to work with any model of Alienware lappie or revision of AlienFX h/w or s/w.
tl;dr forget about it, it doesn't work in any sort of reliable way in Eve.

Thanks for the helpful replies and the expected Alienware flaming.
For the record the reason I bought it was the 11 inch size that isn't a net book but full gaming capable laptop. I needed the power and the form factor, this is the only comp with both. I have the FX turned off except for the backlite keyboard, but when I log into eve it turns the other stuff on. I figured if it was on I might as well use it but apparently it does not work dependably so I'll just disable it. yeah what ever |

Spending $2500 on a computer isn't the problem. The problem is spending $2500 on a computer you could build yourself (easy peasy) for half the price (newegg.com tigerdirect.com).

I doubt you could build any of the Alienware laptops "easy peasy". Getting hold of barebones laptops that work with 150W power dissipated just on graphics cards and don't melt isn't trivial ;)
I agree that engineering them IS fairly trivial but sourcing them isn't.
I got one as it had a stupid warranty on it (4 years next day onsite). I got another for the wife after having to use the warranty on the first one - did what it said and you don't use the normal Dell support. Her screen is simply gorgeous though - LED full HD 17". Makes me sick it does :P

Well I only have the M17x lappies and they don't appear to work. Seems to be some others in the thread with the M11 that DO have it working? I'd give it a try if I were you. Make a newbie alt and test it out (scrammed, armour, shield etc). It might work for you.

Don't let the naysayers get to ya...Alienware is good stuff. I've owned mine for 3 years and have loved every minute of it; best PC I've owned to date (I've owned my fair share, and I also have owned Apple desktop and laptop gear...nothing has pleased me as much as my Alienware).

I've got an MX17 with FX - and I frequently run two or three accounts on there at once. I ALWAYS turn off AlienFX as it can cause problems with conflicts if you have two accounts telling it to do different things.
And for those people who say "over priced payment sucker" i say this...
I bought one cause I can. It was no big deal to me. In fact, it's my second. And the truth is, you'd swap a nut for one, and your whines of envy are like sweet sweet nectar to me. Go cry yourselves to sleep. |

This is more than true, you also have to realize the high rate of DELL failure.
I got all the parts for my desktop on Newegg, total cost for a machine that's about 2/3rds of the power of a top of the line Alienware desktop: about $600. The Alienware Aurora desktop case: about $80 for one that was removed from sale because of minor defects. It came with a warranty and assurance that it was fully functional...
So the computer has this odd problem where it randomly turns off and won't turn back on. I thought it was the power supply I got on Newegg, but a new one worked exactly the same. Turns out it was the power switch on my Alienware case. And the breaker kept getting tripped too, overpriced piece of **** house.
More recently my Alienware case has its headphone and microphone jacks coming apart, just like about eighteen overpriced speaker brands I went through that weren't Bose.
And the backplate wasn't cut right, standard model stuff doesn't fit quite right on it.
I'm just glad the vast majority of my computer is safe from the sh8t midas touch of DELL. Or is it...? --
