I'm currently ratting for most of my income - I have a choice of two ships and I don't know which to pick. I can pick between the Abaddon and the Hurricane.
With my current skills the Abaddon will have 750DPS, The Rat's i'm fighting are Sansha so the damage matches perfectly. Ammo usage is nice and low, the range is good (using Mega pulse 2's.) However the ship is slow so I don't loot or salvage.
With my Current skills the Hurricane does about 550DPS, I can use EMP ammo. I'll kill the rats slower but I have both a Salvager + Tractor Beam so I can loot the wrecks while salvaging some of the BS wrecks. The Hurricane is more agile and faster so I can escape trouble easier.
Which of these two would you pick ? The region is relatively quiet so you don't see to many enemy ships passing through.

Abaddon. Salvage/Loot with a buddy or alt.

Max ISK/hr = Highest dps you can get without losing your ship. Don't loot/salvage, it's a very poor isk/hour ratio.
Tell your buddy to go run his own level 4. If you absolutely must have an alt involved, have your alt pick up another mission and run it concurrently. Salvage alt = waste of a character that could be running a mission.

The Abaddon is the better choice of those two. A Paladin would be an even better choice than that. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

Indeed, not necessarily. Highest isk/hour is blitzing in low-sec, and blitzing isnt only about dps.

There's a strong correlation though. -- Eve Forum ***** Extraordinaire On Twitter

He didn't say it was all about dps, he said it was the most dps you can put out without losing your ship.
With that rule it's irrelevant if you run missions in lowsec, nosec or highsec, atleast if it's assumed it's about applied dps rather than theoretical. Expanding that, yes, blitzing is also about applied dps, you're just applying said dps on fewer targets and factors such as travel time play a larger part. Parrots, commence!

If you want to get into how/where/etc. then I'll just be equally obtuse and say that trading earns maximum ISK/hour and missions should never enter the equation.

Also bare in mind I'm not missioning - I'm just ratting. So I don't have to worry about handing in or blitzing or any of that nonsense.

This might sound crazy but how about... try both, see which one you(in order of relevance) enjoy most and make best isk of. Parrots, commence!

How about a ratting zealot?? Its been very useful for me in Stain. Dmg rigs, cap stable, only loot faction wrecks = win. Also has the benefit to be able to aling and warp off to SS/Station should neut/reds come into you ratting system.
(If you gonna rat Sansha for isk Stain is your best bet.)

I use rattin Zealot and love it, its extra agility, faster lock, warp speed etc etc means you make up for some of the lost DPS because of all the moving/warping rattin involes, nice range too with scorch and fast enough gettin in range with multif, no ammo is also HUGE plus for ratting.
Smaller is usually better for ratting but canes really arent too great for it, chew through tons of ammo and arent that fast gettin into range. So personally I'd go with Baddon and work towards getting a Zealot.
Though by ratting you mean belt ratting or anoms? -----------------

It depends on how 'safe' your area is/how easy logistics are and all that, but from my experience of ratting in Hurricane I can say that it eats ammos too quickly for my liking.
