fairly new player i have been running missions to gain standings. i got bored and decided to try out some DED sites i warped to the 1st gate there was some drones, warped to 2nd site 2 containers no loot weapons did no damaged. am i doing something wrong or are the NPC's not spawning.I read somewhere that other players might have gone through just before and waiting for the npc's to respawn. and are DED profitable?

DED sites are very profitable depending on which DED site you are doing.
They are ranked from 1 to 10 with 1 being easy and 10 being the hardest. You will find them in different locations as in the 6/10 range will only be in 0.0, some are in low sec and some in highsec.
More risk = more reward (Normally) but it is random and chance based so you wont always get good loot.

the above url is a good resource on the exporation sites you can find and it should help you out.

DED 1/2 sites on the map are often heavily camped, they can drop good but you'll often find a empty room. DED 3/10 are found through exploration and can be extremely profitable if lucky, but can also give you absolutely nothing.
If you like the idea of doing complexes I suggest you train scanning skills, but keep in mind exploration is alot of hit and miss.

The ones that map shows, they are called static ded complexes.
In Inder, there is 3/10 ded. I think Hjorammold there is 4/10 ded. If you are looking for more challenge. Nice bounties too.

The 3/10 and 4/10 statics on the map are COSMOS related complexes as far as I know, and I don't think they drop deadspace loot either, but not sure about that.
The 1/10 and 2/10 on the other hand are the standard combat complexes that drop deadspace loot, the deadspace-loot-droppin 3/10 and 4/10 are scannable complexes.

These Constellations have DED Complexes showing in the starmap which are strickly for COSMOS Agent missions. They won't drop any Faction/Deadspace loot and will respawn NPC's and structures within 5 to 10 minutes.
High Security COSMOS Constellations: Amarr Empire Araz constellation
Caldari State Okkelen constellation
Gallente Federation Algintal constellation
Minmatar Republic Ani constellation
Low Security COSMOS Constellations:
Amarr and Caldari Joas constellation
Gallente and Minmatar Tartatven constellation
0.0 COSMOS Constellations:
Pegasus constellation Assilot constellation I-3ODK constellation 760-9C constellation OK-FEM constellation 9HXQ-G constellation 09-4XW constellation E-8CSQ constellation
All other Constellations with DED Complexes showing in the starmap will drop Faction/Deadspace loot.
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/DED_Complex_List
Most of these DED Complexes will be very busy with Campers, Key Grabbers and Farmers. The Complexes usually will respawn NPC's and structures within 1 hour.
Campers = Will rush through each room of the Complex only killing what is needed to get to the last room and then will sit there waiting for the Overseer to spawn to collect Faction/Deadspace loot repeatedly.
Key Grabbers = Will only kill NPC or structure in first room, grab key and warp off to other nearby DED Complexes and do the same while waiting for respawn timer to count down, then re-enters Complex, grabs key again and quickly goes through to get Overseer loot in last room of all nearby Complexes.
Farmer = Will kill, loot and salvage everything in each room en-route to last room. Will usually Camp last room for a few respawns to finish filling up cargohold.
Most of them will have a stock-pile of gate keys stashed in nearby stations and usually carry a couple just in case someone else gets to the key drop first.
As was stated before, Exploration and Expeditions is probably the best way to get Faction/Deadspace loot without much interference from other players.
