I've been releasing backstory for my character to the Veto Corp forums for almost three years, and now have decided to take on a new challenge.
Over the years CCP have provided us with a wealth of history and backstory surrounding the politics, events, history and people in Eve.
One area of prime fiction that has always been somewhat of a grey area has been technical backstory; namely the technologies, lights, clockwork and hardware that keep the Eve universe alive and running. As a real-life engineer, this has frustrated me for a long time now, given the rich and immersive environment that CCP's storyline team have created for us to enjoy over the years.
And so, Project Clockwork was born.
This is a Collective place for me to store the writing that I've released so far surrounding the technical side of Eve, as well as the Eve-Related fiction I'm working on for people's scrutiny.
Eventually I hope to develop this into a series of articles that cover every hull type, weapon type, module type and subsystem in the Eve universe, as well as FTL communication, and all the ancillary technologies we use on a day to day basis as capsuleers.
While I endeavour to remain true to prime fiction at all times (this is one of the things I worry about most when I write), there are some uses of imagination and my own engineering knowledge after ten years as a multi-disciplined engineer.
These articles are a combination of what is currently available in approved prime fiction, along with opinions, suggestions and thoughts from other members of the Eve roleplaying community, and my own knowledge as an Engineer. I hope that everyone who visits this index thoroughly enjoys reading every link they click as much as I've enjoyed putting them together.
With the coming of a hundred complete episodes of my player fiction in The Life Of An Outlaw, totalling over 500 pages of writing and over seven years of character development, I've decided to take on this new challenge and I'd like to say thanks to the hundreds of people who've mailed me with positive comments, and give my sincerest thanks to everyone who voted to make me EON Fiction Writer of the Year 2008.
I'd also like to offer my most heartfelt thanks to CCP Games. It seems like decades since I first undocked into the blackness of New Eden, and these have been the finest years of gaming I've ever had the pleasure to experience. Occasional server issues aside, no other game has compelled me to play or immersed and gripped me so much, and no other game has ever been so rewarding to be a part of.
There's a lot more of this to come if it continues to be well received, and new articles will hopefully appear every couple of weeks, time permitting.
If you enjoy my writing then please feel free to check back and add your comments. I'm always also open to ideas, and the inclusion of other people's opinions and views on how New Eden works, please feel free to drop your comments here or throw them into an evemail for me.
For those who wish to read, you can find an index of my Technical Backstory work at the following link :

If you feel the need to comment, please feel free to do so in this thread.
All I ask is that people please try to keep it civil if they choose to criticise, I'm completely open to postive suggestions on improving my opinions on the intricate workings of Eve. I'm by no means a professional writer of any sort, and I'm still very much developing my writing style.

Curse you and your little dog too.
You've made me want to start compiling all of my own technical backstory ideas. --- Crux Meander: an Eve-Online "soap opera with blasters". |

Nice work expanding on the Capsule and Clone part of the backstory.
One thing about the capsule generations. The capsule existed without cloning tech back in the era of the Caldari/Gallente war and was one of the reasons for the caldari military successes. You might want to mention this 'T0' capsule in the article.

Well, the capsule didn't really exist as such in its current form back then. It was never truly a working concept given its unreliability, and was more just another way of piloting given that death was still a very real concept.
With that in mind I neglected to include it in the revision lineup, given the fact that the real age of the capsule where it was a viable tool began in YC104.

Really like this. Would love it if it included references and some indication of which parts are PF and which are extrapolation.

Glad to see this. I've been considering sponsoring the development of more technical backstory (speculative, rather than fleshing out existing PF), but I have concerns about folks not understanding what we already have. This might develop into a great example of how to do it.

Well, due to a heavy out of game workload this is taking a little more time than expected, but a second article will be present soon!

From an engineer to another, this really looks promising. Looking forward to the developments, very interesting subject.
