So I flew through an 0.3 system on a mission and got my cruiser absolutely rocked by 8 or so other players. Lost it of course, and in 0.3 its fair game. I was wondering if there is like some kind of etiquette to flying in low-sec. Like how do you prevent coming out of warp and suddenly exploding? Or do you just avoid low-sec until you're flying the baddest of the badass ships?

And flying the baddest ships just means you live long enough for them to call in more friends to annihilate you. Don't go to low sec looking for a fight on your terms.

Edited by: True Amarrian Bloodline on 19/05/2011 00:27:19 Open star map selcet the filter for ships destoyed in the last hour, that should give you a better idea of how safe a system is. Still exercise caution, bookmark some safes if you can, and at low sp since cloaky t2 ships are rarely an option: fly frigates.
I've got close to 60mil sp on this alt and i'm still flying t1 cruisers so there's a lot to be said for small and cheap ships.
Don't get the whole "avoid lowsec" mantra in your head. That's counter productive in the extreme. Calculated risk equals reward. Fly smart and you will have a better gaming experience than the average Joe who refuses to go anywhere with less than 0.5 sec.

That - or get a small, fast ship that aligns and warps quickly. Guess you'll have a harder time doing missions in it - but you'll survive. An example of the above would be an interceptor.
There is actually a badass ship that fits the discription as well, but you'd hate to lose a Dramiel in a low sec gate camp.
EDIT: lol at post above ... I actually managed to miss spotting those at the same distance once while driving through Mikumi national park. "Look an elephant" from the back seat got me looking at a ridge by the road - not at the road side ...

Moving in lowsec: - if you want to move stuff safely in lowsec, use a blockade runner (aka transport ship, the one that can fit a covert ops cloak). Essentially anything that can fit covert ops cloak is 99.9% safe in lowsec.Jump,warp,cloak. - if you want to move yourself safely in lowsec, use a pod or a shuttle (or frigateclass ship like interceptor). Anything that can lock you fast enough to catch you will either die to gateguns or is a big camp with lots of remote sensor boost. Catching a pod at lowsec gate before it warps is nigh impossible.
Moving a PvE combat ship safely in lowsec, well thats not as easy, although best bet is to have cruiser/Bc size ship that can either move away from warp scram range fast enough, align before they lock, or move quickly enough back to gate and jump before it pops. No simple answers here. Wouldnt propably help against 8 players, but with one of the above two options you'd have gotten away.

If you join faction warfare not only will you get access to great missions, they will teach you all about how to move around safely in low-sec.
It's true that covert ops ships are the safest in low-sec, but they also take a long time to train and are pretty expensive to buy. Also, you can't really do missions in them, except for the stealth bomber. This is also true for Interceptors. They are very fast, but also skill intensive and expensive to lose.
Fast tech 1 frigates are the way to go in low-sec. They are fast enough to avoid most gate camps, and cheap enough to replace easily if and when you lose them. They generally don't draw a lot of attention from Pirates since they can be a lot of trouble for a 'little' ship. Some frigates are better than others for fighting, and some frigates are better for speed. The Amarr Executioner and the Minmatar Slasher (Caldari Condor, Gallente Atron) are very cheap tech 1 frigates which are very fast, even faster if you fit them with propulsion modules such as a micro-warp drive in the mid slots. Overdrives in the low slots will also make your ship very fast (but of course very fragile). I like to think of my Executioners as a 'low-sec shuttle'.
When venturing into low-sec (and/or faction war, or Piracy) a lot of people plan for it by buying twenty cheap tech 1 frigates and planning to lose them all. This helps to get over your fear of engaging/ being engaged by enemy ships. More ships in EVE are lost to panic than any other weapon.
Even cheaper then tech 1 ships are shuttles, which take no training so everyone can fly them. Use one of your three character slots to make an 'alt', and with no training put him or her in a dirt cheap shuttle. Make that alt your scout who jumps into the system ahead of you to check it out before you jump into that low-sec system yourself. No more surprise gate camps!
Using the map helps too. Check under the filters for 'pod kills' and 'ships destroyed in the last hour'. If you see a big red blob in that system, don't go.
When you get yourself a fast, cheap frigate fly around the parts of low-sec you think you will be frequenting most often. Use this frigate to make some bookmarks such as 'warp-out points' at a gate. These are bookmark safespots about 1000 km away from a gate that you can warp to instantly if you are trapped by a gate camp. If you do the same thing at the undock for a station, you have an 'insta-undock'. Also, warp to a planet and make a bookmark while warping, warp to another planet, make another bookmark about halfway through, warp to a third planet, make another bookmark. These are your safespots. Whenever you are in trouble you can warp to these, just keep bouncing between all three safespots when hiding from an enemy.

As was said in another thread, don't listen to this guy.
Interceptors are NOT expensive, in the 15 million range for the hull, and if that's too much money for you, well, you're doing it wrong.
They are also not terribly skill intensive, especially if the only goal is to travel in them. If you start from scratch you could have a travel fit interceptor in about a month or less if you're mapped for it. And if you think one month of training is skill intensive, then EVE isn't for you.

Actually ... what people should do when reading advice - is to think about the person giving it and how that person differs from them.
If you're a new person with no money reading what some veteran who throws money away with a shovel says - think about the fact that he's got a hell of a lot more money than you do.
People posting in this forum - should keep in mind that it is the New Citizens Forum - NOT - Ships & Modules or Warfare & Tactics.
You don't have to have a really expensive ship to go down to lo-sec. You can put a crappy cloak on anything. I've used them any number of times to slow boat my way out of gate camps - or back to the gate. It's really slow - but you can do it. That will also really make you appreciate the better stuff when you can afford it.
When you go down to lo-sec - think about what you're risking vs. the reward of going down there. Then - think about how much fun it might be.
For the most part - my experience - is that if all you want to do is make money - then it's a lot easier to do in Hi Sec. You don't have to constantly check your scanner for probes or have to warp out to keep another player from finding your mission site. If all you want is to make money - then - for me anyway - going down to Lo Sec is more trouble than it's worth. You can make more money down there - but the risk is NOT commensurate with the reward.
To me - going down to Lo Sec - is all about the challenge of being there. Lo Sec is for PVP. That is the reason to go down there - even if all you're doing is running away, playing cat and mouse (as the mouse).
But - if you find making money in Hi Sec boring ... want some excitement mixed in with your money making - then the challenge of doing things in Lo Sec may be worth it to you for those reasons.
Just start off with cheap ships. Then as you get more experienced and have a better understanding of what's going on - take bigger risks - but have the reserves to deal with any losses. One thing about using T1 ships - is that at least you can insure them.
Anyway ... here's another thread about Lo Sec with lots of people who disagree with me but it's got some good links and some notes on how to keep from getting blown up.
