Hi,
What drones do you recommend for newbie miner? Both combat and mine ones. I am currently skilling for Procurer, if this will make any difference.

On a dedicated mining ship it is usually recommended to have some light scout drones to fend off any hostile NPCs who spawn in the belt, as the ore income from mining drones will be very low compared to your main mining lasers. That said, if you are in a fleet, you don't necessarily need to have combat drones as someone else will likely be able to defend you. --- ISD IonCharge Lt. Commander ISD STAR |

So, you are suggesting to not buy any mining drones and invest just in combat drones (for now I will mine alone)?
Thanks for advice .

Yes, combat drones will fend off rats as you mine.

You won't need any drones - IF - you stay in .9 or 1.0 systems, as there are no rats.
But the one mining drone you'd get with a Mining Frigate (if you aren't using a Burst) or a Procurer isn't going to make much difference so most people go with the combat drones and stay with them when using Retrievers. Once you get into a Covetor or a Hulk - you get 10 drones so you can carry 5 of each.
Drones/Drones I - will get you 1 drone and V will get you 5.
Drones/Scout Drone Operation I - will get you combat drones with higher levels increasing your drone control range.
Drones/Mining Drones I - will get you mining drones with each level trained getting you 5% more yeild.
Drones/Drone Interfacing - will get you a 20% boost to your drones damage and yield per level - but requires Drones/Drones V.
The other Drone Skills can also help.
Now ... if you don't plan on using cruisers - you can just train for mining barges and that will get you into them sooner but it's fairly easy to get into a mining cruiser and that will get you more yield than one of the mining frigates - and - depending on the cruiser, allow you to use more than one drone (the Scythe only has one).
That's really all up to you. Stay with Mining Frigates and get into barges sooner - or - make more money along the way.
*shrug*
Now - there are different kinds of drones a miner might usually use.
T2 mining drones mine well - but are more expensive and require Drones/Mining Drones V.
T1 combat drones are usually good enough for a rookie as the T2 combat drones require the more expensive Factional Drone training listed under Drone Skills.
Each faction has it's own drones, which have different characteristics. You can carry drones based on the type of damage they do for the type of rats you are likely to run into in your area. But a lot of people just carry Hobgoblins as Thermal damage is a primary or secondary vulnerability - unless - they are mining in Minmatar space where there are Angels who are vulnerable to the Warriors Explosive damage.
Amarr drones (Acolyte) do EM damage and Caldari (Hornet) do Kinetic.
Now ... as to that Procurer ...
A lot of people just skip those and go on to Retrievers, especially if they've got like an Osprey as, with T2 miners and good Mining Cruiser Skills - it can out mine the Procurer. Even a Mining Frigate with T2 miners and Level V Frigate Skills can out mine a Procurer - but - most people don't have their frigate skills that high - AND - you're going to get carpal tunnel syndrome moving the rocks out of your hold every single cycle with the small cargo hold a mining frigate and cruiser have.
If you're not using T2 Miners and don't have your Frigate or Cruiser skills trained up fairly high - then the Procurer's Single Strip Miner will get you more yield and it's bigger cargo hold and 3 minute cycle time will make your mining easier.
Of course you have to spend the money on the Procurer which you could be saving for a Retriever.
But - all the fittings you put on the Procurer will fit on the Retriever and you can keep the Procurer as a back up if you lose the Retriever or hand it down to your up and coming alternate account miners - if you get more than one. If you're running multiple accounts doing mining ops - that cargo hold size really helps. I don't even like to think about running mining ops with frigates ... if your mining skills are good enough ... you have to stagger the mining lasers and you're looking at like less than 30 seconds between cargo hold dumps ...
So ... *shrug* what you do there is up to you. You can get some good use out of a Procurer but - most people just wait until they can get a Retriever.

Very much what Toshiro said!
Sitting in a retriever, you quickley will leave 1.0 and 0.9 systems, as the rocks in 0.5 and 0.6 are usually MUCH bigger, and that is what you are searching for. Retrievers drone bay can only hold ONE flight (5) of light drones, and when mining solo you will want Hobgoblin I (or Warrior I), to defeat belt rats.
Upgrading from a Retriver to a Hulk later in this process, the Hulks drone bay can hold a full flight of light scout drones to defend belt rats, and a full flight of light mining drones, i would recommand to use, as heavy mining drones are slow as hell, and if you are not in PERFECT range to the roid, the flight time of those things will kill your mining/hour ratio.
TL; DR; Hulk + 5 x Hobgoblin II + 5 x Mining Drone II rocks! DonŠt use mining drones when AFK! DonŠt get me wrong, you can only use 5 drones at a time, but you can switch when needed.

The actual threshold is 0.85. I believe the more precise double-digit figure is called "true sec".
I just don't know whether it is 0.85 that is rat-free and you nly fin belt rats in 0.84 and less, or if 0.84 has belt rats and 0.85 is safe. But you can go slightly lower than 0.9.

I recently tested Mining Drone I yield for a friend and this is a good opportunity to share the results.
I didn't want to have to worry about boost so I used an Imicus, unfleeted.
Both tests lasted 40 minutes.
At optimal range (5000 meters) I averaged 0.28 m3/sec per drone. At 2000 meters I averaged 0.43 m3/sec per drone.
I have average drone skills.
