I do agree and did so with most of your post. It's really as simple as that. However just to be clear: I objected to the notion that people not willing or able to pay for a hardware upgrade clearly have bigger problems in their life. I have given it another thought but still think that this is simply a very questionable position. Sorry for being somewhat rude about it though.

You ****ers are part of what is breaking eve.
Eve has always been a low-spec PvP game which would run FAST with the correct settings.
No longer.

There were a couple or three ATI cards for AGP that offered a lot more performance than the 7600 GT, but availability on ANY AGP card today is going to be very limited. I'm not sure if ANYONE is still making the things.
There is also an AGP version of the 7800GS but it's probably similar performace to the 7600 GT (I can't compare the two, as my 2 highend Nvidea AGP cards are a 7800 GS and a 7300 GT).
IMO NVidea missed the boat on their choice of when to cut off AGP support.

I've got a Core2Duo with 3GHz + 4GB Ram and the ATI Radeon 4670 512MB over PCI.. and it runs the CC fine (didn't test the CQ tests so far as the DL would had killed my monthly download limit.. gotta upgrade that, doh!). Same GPU is available on AGP as: HIS Radeon HD 4670 IceQ, 1GB DDR3 800MHz, VGA, DVI, HDMI (H467QS1GHA) 75EUR PowerColor Radeon HD 4670 PCS, 1GB DDR3, VGA, DVI, TV-out (R73KG-TI3) 71EUR
I'd suggest the HIS with the dual slot, as this will be better for cooling (air that cools the GPU get's blown out the back and more fresh air will be sucked in your case this way).

I really hope it's optional (even though it all points to it being forced down our throats). My computer can handle it just fine, I just don't want to be forced to walk around in a station while I'm playing my internet space ship game.

I have an old pc Too. I can play EvE with no problems at all but the character creation takes ages to load. I can't create a new avatar and I really hope that the Quarters won't prevent me to play EvE :(

I can create an avatar, my system can't run CQ any faster than 1.6fps with about three seconds of UI lag. You're out of luck, I'm afraid to say :\

So sick of idiots responses to this 'Your PC can't run eve you are poor' so someone with a house worth like ś200k and a ś1k PC is wealthier than someone with a ś500k house and a cheap PC? its just as stupid as people defining wealth by car or other small values. I'm a student so don't have huge disposable income and I'm not going to argue about family wealth as that is just pathetic, but this is not the issue.
Anyway to my point, I have got a nice desktop PC that'll run eve fine at 1920X etc.., but a lot of the time, especially term time I just wanna log eve on my laptop and update orders, trade contracts and run industry stuff, ideally in bed. I can PVP on my laptop as well if I want, although it'll overheat if not on a desk.
Character creation was SLOW on my laptop and will cause it to overheat, so if this is not optional no more casual station trading and such. No I will not buy a new laptop as mine is nice enough for everything else (bought 2010, I3 proc, win 7 etc..) I would really like an option to not load any station environment, like having the map open but even less drain on resources. Just give us the NeoCom and and UI on an desktop background (slideshow of our ships or something) for an in-station eve with no undocking. Call it bed-eve or something and you could even port it to smartphones.

At the summit I asked if Incarna could be optional (since I was on a POS laptop that barely ran Eve to begin with) and the response was "does your computer fit the minimum requirements to play eve?"
http://support.eveonline.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=124
Ugh. Not by far. Incarna is not going to be optional but if you have the minimum requirements it should run without a problem. For those who got by below the minimum specs, welp.

It's obvious Incarna won't be optional, it's an expansion that will be incorporated into the game just like the previous ones have been.
No kidding, anyone who asks a competely idiotic question like this should be playing Atari Pong...

On the surface of it I agree, however Ive run into quite a number of people playing EVE over the years that use this as their primary outlet for entertainment, and they dont make a lot of cash in the real world. Some work in walmart, a number are unemployed (especially in Iceland after their economic meltdown) etc, some look after the infirmed etc, and really have no life or income source.
Ive even run into a number of situations where the corp pools cash together (in r/l) to buy a member a new rig so they can keep playing.
In my experience (surprisingly) the r/l prosperity of the EVE player base is pretty low.
Ah welfare for the broke gamer. Pay up or get out. I see a sense of entitlement. "It's not FAIR, I wanna play EVE but I gotta buy diapers for grand dad"... LOL

I know it wonĘt happen but could I also add my voice to the ęplease make Incarna optionalĘ group.
I have a pretty good, but not ętop of the rangeĘ gaming machine (specifications are in the CQ feedback thread for anyone interested) and it walks (not runs) CQ reasonably well at 20 to 30 FPS. I hope if the optimisations (coming soon Ö) prove to be any good this may improve but I still had to turn off shadows, HDR and AA to enable this sort of frame rate.
I also have an Acer laptop I use for doing my PI, skills updates, long distance gate to gate trips etc while sitting watching a bit of TV or a film in the evening. This ran Eve fine and did all the above things well, but today I copied over the Duality client and it just killed the system. With all settings on low it just managed 2 to 3 FPS and was to all intents and purposes unusable.
The main reason for this I think seems to be the amount of video memory the client needs to run, from my tests on the gaming machine it needs over 512 Meg just to provide the captains quarters and this rapidly climbs to nearer 1024 Meg when moving, getting near the screens etc. The laptop only having 128 Meg (dedicated) has to ęslaveĘ out the video to main memory (slower) and so the system slows to a crawl.
So my advice to anyone thinking of getting a new graphics card is to go for a minimum of 1024 Meg to give the client ębreathing spaceĘ to display the CQ. Sadly I canĘt upgrade the laptop so if CQ comes out in its current state Eve will not exist on it after June and I sympathise with anyone else who may not be able to either upgrade or purchase a new system. IĘm lucky to have a gaming machine to carry on playing but others are not so lucky.

It's a silly argument really. For Incarna to be compelling it must be enforced, as CCP has said in the past.
As for requirements, well, it is CCP's decision. Let's hope they have and take the time to make and check observations, and do the math for the business intelligence.
The hardware debate in this is subject to that as well. They'll have to strike a compromise either way. But since EVE has to grow, the argument of "people should buy better hardware from Nvidia" should be offset by simple business considerations relevant for the current situation and the future prospects.
EVE is growing quite well in what is called developing countries. Upping the ante solely on a basis of Valve statistics is as such not the smartest thing to do.
Equally, EVE has a considerable userbase consisting of folks who *should* be working at work, but are playing EVE there (to varying degrees) or use work provided resources during/between/before/after company time to connect to EVE for varying purposes (from market to skillchanges etcetera). Typically on hardware in the categories of business notebooks or slim form desktops. GPU computing is unfortunately all too often with dependancies on the differences between desktop and mobility hardware.
At the same time, it is not smart to underestimate the visible impact of recession phases on what is called buy power among user groups using hardware in the categories of "family" and "oem" pc's. It's not without reason that Nvidia has lost market share in the oem and family type markets, and simultaneously there is an interesting trend there from GPU to IGP formats. Something which in the gaming industry has been noticed by quite a few smart companies who tailor to cater to those growing segments as well. Consider how sci fi games like Black Prophecy target specifically such segments (fortunately Black Prophecy is fun, but has no depth, and is generally fail even if it looks good - pun intended).
And aside of that, there's the little hiccup of mobility market trends bleeding into PC computing and mixing. With trends pushing towards lower hardware specs for user niches that historically fell in the notebook segments of a few markets. More and more, that grows smaller and is replaced by segments with lower hardware spec patterns. Whether that is a factor, like all the previous and unmentioned ones, is up to CCP to do the research in. Is it of use that people can play anywhere, anytime, martini bianco? I'd say yes. It is an emerging dynamic where growth depends on users impacting evens and creating / sharing stories. If such user groups are big enough, limiting opportunity to engage in that is not good for the dynamic.
All of that is up to CCP. I'm sure that at CCP you will not see dismissal of common commercial considerations. That would be something CCP would have done in the past, sure. But considering how much they have on their shoulders this and next year I cannot imagine they would simply sidestep these decisions on a basis of "screw it, people can buy new pc, we don't have time or inclination cause its our game". It is their game, yes. But it is also their livelihood. For that, got to cater to markets and trends.
CCP unable to provide an opt out angle, well that is no surprise. I can imagine and understand technical considerations. Heck, I could imagine - in light of the short track and build up of creative and technical debt on the project - that it is simply not possible given time / resource constraints. Aside of that, CCP do not have much good precedent in regards to opt out concepts. Quite often for good reasons. Not "omg my game I make for me" (as was too often expressed in a closed past) but for reasons of immersion, npe user adoption, and so forth.
It's a null argument. CCP decides. I'm sure they do their homework. No fun without business. The only reason for CCP to ignore such matters, would be if they had already ran out of time and resources. That would be not good at all.

Originally by: Barakkus You may want to get the Duality client installed and check out the Captain's Quarters, it's not as bad performance-wise as the character creator.
While I am looking forward to Incarna, I really wish they had stuck to the "you don't have to get out of your pod if you don't want to" thing various people have posted over the years. I like the captain's quarters dealie, but I don't want to be in there every time I dock.
This. This.
After testing on Sisi, it's great and all, but I do want the option to just dock up and ship spin too. If I'm docking to say, grab some cap boosters real quick, I dont want to dock, load CQ find my ship in the ships window, double click, switch to item window, drag and drop, when I can currently just dock, double click ship model, drag charges, done. Yes, this can be construed as whining about something simple, but unnecessary UI complexity is unnecessary, and currently it's quick and works. I'm not opposed to CQ, I just want the option to not have to get out of my pod if I don't want to.

For Incarna to be compelling it must meet its goals. One of its major goals (I'm not sure it even has any others) is enhancing immersion. Capsuleers getting out of their pods every single time they dock breaks immersion. |

Exactly what I mentioned in another post, how is it immersion to consider that my capsuleer is docking up, ejecting the pod, shuttling down to the captains quarters, getting out, cleaning off, getting on a fresh set of clothes, then opening a cargo menu just to drop off one unit of holoreels and undock?

So many people who don't understand that people can budget the costs of paying a subscription but not for new hardware.
One reason WoW has far more subscriptions is the fact they designed and work around it operating on hardware that come the 21st will not work with eve at all.
What is going to happen is many like myself will take out limited luxury budget and spend it elsewhere. If I get a new rig to replace the burnt out one I can't afford to replace right now, I likely will not return to EVE for years if at all.
I and many others can budget $20-30 a month for games/etc in this **** poor economy. But we can't do big purchases of a couple hundred dollars in hardware. (especially with gas, groceries, light bills, new tires, rent, etc )
