Edited by: Sidus Isaacs on 26/05/2011 14:27:29 I made a facebook account way back before it was cool or main stream and when all it was about was sharing images with your friends (cue the hippster glasses, but it is true). I hardly ever use it now a days, but I do have an account just sitting there.
I don't care about twitter.
As for ops "goddamn phone". Lol. You don't impress anyone with your "old school" way. If everyone thought like you did and did not use new stuff, we would still be hitting rocks together in caves. So just stop pretending like the old ways are better.
I use a lot of other net based communications, like email, irc, vnetrilo, skype, team speak, steam chat sometimes, and me and my friends custom made IM client. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My wife and friends browbeat me into a facebook account which I never used and is now, thankfully, defunct, a good friend emigrated to Australia and we keep in touch via email and msm but he insisted I start a twitter account as well, so I did, all I do is tweet my bowel movements and gin intake, we still use email and msm to talk about relevant stuff.

I got a question for you all. How many of you ignore that whole Facebook/Twitter bull****? Ill make the start.
No facebook account. No twitter.
No whatever - i just use my goddamn telephone if i want "stay in touch with my friends" I dont need to tell the world that i am ****ting right now. I dont feel the urge to upload my private photos to the interwebs.
Really, what is the sense behind fb and such data-mining crapsites?
Yeah I dont do mainstream **** either, probably why I dont think the world is getting taken over by a giant eyeball shaped like a triangle.
I did use to have a facebook, but because I never watched TV and actually had a life outside work (no that doesnt mean going to the pub and 'claiming' to be drunk every weekend) my friends list rapidly dropped, sadly I did the mistake of linking a youtube account to facebook and well a lot of people got upset by my trolling :(.
Then I decided to burn my cell phone because no one enjoys speaking on them, everyone texts, which is so ******ed out of work.
Hmm as for media and all things media related, I stopped reading anything media related when WoW came out, there really wasnt any time for me to believe some ******s opinion blindly.
Alcohol? Well I didnt like to drunk dial OR pee every 5 mins so I stopped that too, thats really when people started calling me boring :S.
Mass focus on relationships? Hahaha, this isnt the 60s you can have all the benefits of a relationship without signing a full time contract of being burdened by one, but hey who am I kidding most people WANT a relationship because then they can pay half the rent.
Which brings me to the last mainstream thing, obsession of money, funny isnt it how money comes to those who dont want obsess about it, ambition > money, if you made a list of everything YOU wanted to buy (nothing to show off etc) the list will be quite short. I often go into stores, mainly for the extra exercise or to study the flock, I want to buy stuff, but everything is just so **** and isnt worth getting despite being "THE BEST PURCHASE YOU WILL EVER MAKE".
Guess im just immune from growing wool, I use to grow wool but then MMOs distracted me to the point where I am so obsessed with ambition I havent got time to follow the leader.
Personally I say ignoring TV and all things media related allowed me to shave and become free.
Was this the reply you were after? If not feel free to criticise and completely misunderstand.
Regards .

I also don't stay 'friends' with ex's and I don't really want them stalking me and jerking off over my profile photos for the rest of their life. that kind of thing really ..

Its hardly paranoida when FB have admitted openly to selling email addresses and personal information in the past
Some people dont want personal information online, especially not in the hands of a company like FB that is actively looking for ways to profit using peoples personal info.
I'm not totally against social networking but I do really distrust and dislike FB, twitter comes in useful for keeping up to date with companies as its better than following 50 different blogs when you can get regular one line updates. For personal use though yeah....wtf is twitter for -----------------

I find FB invaluable to keep up with my friends and events around my university. I also tend to restrict all of my privacy options to friends only, and I leave some info out.
As for twitter.... I have no ****ing clue why I would ever need to update people constantly about my life. Hence, I don't.

Had facebook for a week... strugled another to get my account deleted. It is one of the worlds biggest scams. There really are better and more localized services like that available.
...and I've noticed that people who spend their days in facebook are usually the kind I don't even want to spend my real life with. Liking people who need constant liking is somewhat difficult.

I barely use it. If I cared about staying in touch with people, I'd use it more because it does seem useful for that.

So that people can show they have a life and/or justify their existence.
A news update on someone's life basically... if you care.

I am going to put my hand up and say yes, yes I am a social networking *****.
Irl I'm one of those scene/emo/punk/hipsters that seems to attract a lot of attention online. I have 5000 friends and 884 friend requests on facebook, god knows how many followers on twitter and I recently created a tumblr for posting political blogs which is actually proving quite popular.
Now for a moment, I am going to let you in to my life so perhaps you will understand why I enjoy talking to a whole heap of people online. I warn you, this is personal, so if you don't like that sort of thing I'd skip to the next post.
I come from a background of mental & physical abuse and homelessness. Imagine an episode of Skins and you get the idea. The final result is that at this point in my life I suffer with Social Anxiety Disorder (to a point where I don't leave my house) and I'm trying to sort out a pit of anorexia which I recently fell in to. I don't have family who visit me, mainly because I live in a small Welsh village in the middle of nowhere. I also work from home, so as you can well imagine, it gets quite lonely.
In the plethora of questions I receive on Formspring the same question always pops up. Why do you need 5000 Facebook friends? Do you actually talk to them all? The answer, no. But in reality, why would someone go to a nightclub when they can drink and listen to music at home? It's about meeting with friends and meeting new people.
The most important people in my life are all people that I met online. A couple of months ago when I was struggling for food, I received letters with Dollar bills attached, Euro's, Irish Stirling. I recently had a friend from Canada come stay while she was travelling through Europe and we had an awesome time watching Studio Ghibli movies. These are people that I am proud and privileged to be able to call friends, because I know they'd do whatever they could for me, and I for them. And I met them all through Facebook.
What an individual makes of social networking is up to them, it's not for everyone, it really does come down to ones personal life style. But for me, this is the sense behind it.
