Your faith in capitalism is impressive. What makes you think any company would even try to start a business involving expensive travel that almost nobody in the world would want to do, considering the price or that many people couldn't, considering the physical requirements. What "space resources" are you talking about? The satellite junk they left floating around there? Or the incredible amount of dust on the moon.
When even the head of the IMF would rather **** a maid than do something useful with his money, I don't think your plans of private space travel will work out. Unless countless tax money funded government and university research projects make it cheap enough of course.

My faith in capitalism knows no bounds. It is the ONLY system that can be consistently expected to produce technological marvels in the service of wealth creation.
I'm not saying that GovCo doesn't have its uses in this regard - sometimes it can provide a kickstart to needed technology and of course military needs also drive a lot of (mostly private-sector) innovation.
The problem with government agencies is that once they have outlived their usefulness they don't die - they just find another way to spend the taxpayers' money.
PS. The IMF is an intergovernmental agency and as such its leader is a poor example of a public sector capitalist.

Most likely the fact that a business is trying to start a business involving expensive travel. You could have said the exact same thing about air travel.

Hell yeah companies are interested about the dust on the moon. The moon is an abundant source of Helium-3. We just don't have the fusion reactors yet.
Titan has enough hydrocarbons just sitting around in pools to solve almost any foreseeable energy crisis.
You don't need a Hulk to mine asteroids, but a single asteroid could hold tens of trillions of dollars of precious minerals They could just re-direct one into low-earth orbit and take it apart.
Once you get sufficient space industry orbit side. The satellite junk won't be a resource, but it would sure as hell be a danger. Clearing might never be profitable.... guess NASA has a place after all...

Originally by: Jno Aubrey NASA has verged on irrelevancy for a long time now.
NASA was and is extremely relevant. For example, The GPS satellites you take for granted were due to be pulled down and either fixed or replaced half a decade ago, but due to funding constraints, not a single one has gotten its required maintenance.
Those things are literally going to start falling out of the sky over the next few years, and since NASA has no money or shuttles at this point, the EU is going to have to launch its own system to take over.
I'd email them and ask them not to put any over north america just to teach you lot a lesson about global responsibility and nationalised narcissism, but that would be unfair on Canada and Mexico.
Yes, because THAT'S going to help global matters. Go right ahead and sh!t on everyone because you're another America-hating d!ck from the UK trying to prove a point. That's the way to set an example.
Nevermind the fact that our satellites are your satellites as well, so see how far you get when you try to take "your" ball and go home.
What, no blame-it-all-on-the-tea party rage?
Are you OK? Feeling sick today?
Someday I am going ask you what tea party you are talking about.

Interesting, pretty brave of them. The point about air travel is somewhat fitting, but even there as well as in space, government research made it possible, and I would argue that if it would be left to private interests, only necessary (large-scale) research would be done.
Apparently one company is actually already running, but they seem to be... dubious.
Quote: Japanese businessman Daisuke Enomoto sued Space Adventures as his trip was canceled by them for medical reasons after he paid $21,000,000 and no refund was given.
Also, apparently NASA is willing to help the company you mentioned.
Quote: In February 2007, officials from Virgin and NASA signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the potential for collaboration.

The earth already has (enough?) renewable energy sources but companies always go for the most profitable option while minimizing their risk. Without infrastructure/research from the government they will not explore other options unless they're cheaper or they are forced to do so. Even if there are useful elements on the moon, or might be on asteroids, there are apparently no ways to extract them efficiently.
Even if governments just want spaceships with lasers, the involved research is generally useable in many ways.

Extensive research into space travel has already been done in the private sector, with your tax dollars. It's called the military industrial complex, and all their technology is proprietary.
Just because they don't parade it around in TV doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The stealth bombers you are familiar with now first went into use back in the 60's.

I'm from Australia. Its very important for you to understand that not a single developed western nation likes your country as a political entity. You have a terrible system of government that continues to regularly impose itself on the rest of the worlds business. Thankfully, your government owes so much money now that over the course of the next few decades it will have to make the decision of either collectively giving blowjobs the UK, Australia and EU or fail-cascading and leaving its population a third world country.

That's not the point. NASA is a GovCo agency and as such is incapable of doing anything efficiently, nor can they make course changes easily when circumstances dictate.
If NASA, EuroSpace, and the like did not exist then you would have private sector companies competing to provide launch services and exploit space resources, which would vastly accelerate the process.
I have not so much confidence in capitalism. Some projects require huge amounts of trial and error that really will never pay off. The moon landings, for example, provided valuable data but were in and of themselves a useless waste of money. No-one will ever go to the moon on Saturn V rockets in a commercial situation, it could never be cost effective or safe enough.
The best people to lay that foundation are definitely government agencies. With huge amounts of money and no need to generate directly profitable results, but a far greater need to make it safe and reliable, they can create a much more solid basis that commercial entities can then build on.
In 10 or 20 years time, when government agencies have found a way to make the moon accessible, then there will be a groundwork enough to hand it over to commercial companies.

Yeah, I had a feeling that THIS is why so many Europeans like love Obama. They realize that he clearly weakens the USA, as a nation. -Burning through money 5x faster than any President in history, on stupid **** like Obamacare and 'green energy projects' - leaving us with a mountain of debt.
-Driving up energy costs by wrecking our domestic fossil-fuel energy production with EPA regulation and locking up oil prospects.
-Crapping on developed western nations that like us (Britain, Israel) and encouraging our enemies in Iran and Hamas/PLO.
Obama is doing everything he can to weaken the US in the long term. Sad that such a man managed to get himself elected. Whatever Bush's faults - he genuinely loved his country. Obama - not so much.

Nothing new here at all and you toting party lines just shows how ignorant you really are. What Obama is doing is just the next step in the ever increasing sentiment over the past 200 hundred years that US citizens feel they have had a god giving ôrightö to over consume.
Do you remember your father or grandfather saying the famous quote, ôI want you to have it better then I did?ö That sentiment has bred a fat, lazy, self entitled population in a world where you do not even really have a ôrightö to life, much less a ôrightö to anything else.
Does that mean we should stand by and take it? I would say no, but people like you and those on the far left of US politics, that constantly spit venom like you all do, will never solve problems, it just keeps tilting the seesaw in the opposite direction.
So keep up the ignorant verbal flame throwing, it gets a lot done

But through the 'thieves guild' of international politics it often defaults to turtling and aquiescence. which is the case with the winds of change at the moment in the middle east and north Africa.

Actually your wrong about the energy costs. Even experts have testified before congress that our domestic policy will do very little to effect prices in the short term.
Secondly, Israel? Incase you didnt realize, to ever get peace in that region both the Palestinians AND the Israelis will have to make concessions. Israel will have to give up some of the occupied territory.
Burning through money? Like Bush? Who burned through cash after lying to the American people and the world to start a war in Iraq based on false pretenses of WMD?

Obama is special. Even the worst kind of knuckle-dragging, beer-guzzling, pick-up truck-driving, neanderthal racist in America can also enumerate several other reasons why he's competing with Jimmy Carter for the title of "Worst. President. Ever."
He may lose that competition as he beat Jimmy's record on successful covert ops in foreign countries using helicopters. But then, he still has more than a year to go.
As for the Race Card, it had been overused to the point that when someone pulls it out I don't even see it anymore except to flip the bird and dismiss it. I think more and more of the country is starting to feel this way - to the point where we may actually be able to have some public discussions about race issues in the not-too-distant future. __________________________________________________ Name a shrub after me; something prickly and hard to eradicate. |

Yeah, Bush Jr really cared about the future of the US. He was co-owner of oil-companies with Bin-Laden. And all of this isn't even hidden, or the realm of fantasy or conspiracy, it's reality.
