So, I just read the bit about the new currency for incarna, and it got me thinking. There's an incredibly highly developed market in-game, but one thing that's lacking is currency trading. Here's what I've sort of envisaged in the last 15 minutes. ISK remains the currency primus inter pares, with seed items such as skill-books marketed at seed in ISK only. Any item sold on the market by a person is marketed in the local currency, this could start off with just four empire currencies, with the aim of system-controlling nullsec alliances being able to create their own currencies as well. Things like PVE bounties, planet export taxes, sov charges could all be quoted at a fixed numerical value in the local currency, so 1m Goon dollars or 1m Red Alliance rubles, which would encourage alliances to seek strong currencies. This would have the effect that before you would kill a 3,000,000isk battleship and get 3m isk, now you kill the same battleship, getting 3m in the local currency, which could be 5m isk or only 0.5m. Alliances could opt to have fixed-rate currencies, which would have to be maintained against speculation by direct, automatic intervention from the alliance wallet, but this could become extremely expensive, or they could have free-floating currencies, with the risk of devaluations. I'm kinda envisaging this allowing for PVP to fully expand into the game economics. A concerted attack on an alliance currency could severely damage their economy, then your ships swoop in and pluck the compromised systems straight out of their hands. Of course, just as in the real world, some canny traders would be able to get very rich from trading currencies, or lose it all by betting the wrong way. Thoughts people?

I also want my ISK that I worked for to be potentially worthless.

I envision real money traders making specific currencies valuable while at the same time intentionally devaluing other currencies in order to create even more demand for RMT. Good way to make a large portion of the playerbase quite playing.

This idea has come up before. there are hundreds of currencies in use in eve, some only accepted on specific planets.
The ISK is the currency set up for interplanetary/inter empire trade and one isk can feed a family for months. Capsuleers are that wealthy that we don't bother the lesser currency's.
Have a search for the other threads about this and why its a bad idea. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Different NPC currencies strikes me as unnecessary complexity in my humble opinion; however, in regards to player alliances issuing their own currency: What you suggest could be implemented by creating a second kind of share--a non-voting share. These could serve as informal currency backed by the full faith and credit of big alliances.
The biggest stumbling block would be getting people to trust that their currency is safe but if some entrepreneur could pull it off, it could reap many benefits. |
