Which is why I'll still happily buy and install 10 year old games in preference to newer A1 titles, and why I wait at least 6-12 months for buying most modern games: when you can't dazzle the customer with your rendering engine and art assets, you actually need to make the game high quality and fun. Trading off robust gameplay for pretty graphics is a fast path to high customer burn.
The words of an actual Mac user! If you want good game performance on your Mac, only install 10 year old games!

I do have a PC thank you very much - it's called my Intel Mac. I run OSX, WinXP and Linux on it just fine, thank you, and I've been gaming on Macs since day one.
While Blizzard goes for the ultra-casual market (yuck), they do know a thing or two about low system requirements helping expand and maintain playerbase. CCP should be wary about setting the bar too high for Eve players.
I know plenty of MMOers and just computer users in general running their games on three - five year old PC and Macs. Having spoken with many over the years, I know a large percentage will simply switch to another game if their current game insists they spend money on upgrading before they're ready. Yes - some will upgrade early, but I think you'll find they're fewer in number.
We're playing an MMO where the social factor and user-created gameplay are far more important than flashy graphics. Not the latest id FPS. That said - I've been gaming for decades and know that pretty graphics does not always mean the latest graphics. Some of the most attractive games I've ever played are now older than the stereotypical 12 year old forum troll. They didn't need the latest graphics hardware to look good. Just good art direction. So don't get me wrong - I like a good looking Eve as much as the next guy. I just think the artists are a damn sight more important than the hardware it's rendered on.
But that's just me and my experience. If you've a massive hard-on for the latest GPU and measure your self worth by the cost of your hardware, go ahead and run Eve that way. It's still not going to change Eve's gameplay one iota. -- Frog blast the vent core! |

Sorry for being completely off topic, but yeah... I guess that's what you get with a Mac. You pay more up front, but then you have the comfort of knowing you'll pay even more down the line ;) |

Edited by: Presidente Gallente on 31/05/2011 08:12:46 Upgrading hardware is one essential rule in our century. If you want to enjoy the latest technology or possible features you have to decide if it's worth the money or not. If you can't afford a better PC it's not the problem of a software developer. It's like you drive a second hand 90th AUDI 100 but you want to drive a RS6 you should have the money or keep on dreaming. It's a major rule in software development. Software adapts to hardware. Hardware needs to upgrade for software. When you want faster rendering by the latest software release, you need to upgrade your hardware. Simple. CCP is doing a good job because you still can run the game on older hardware with some nice options. But it should be logical to accept that at a special point your hardware has to follow their development. They have to look forward and not behind all the time. At this point it's up to you to adapt to the never ending process of technological evolution.

For $40 / ú25 (etc....) you can now get Shader 5.0 support:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/201166
You can get a secondhand Shader 3.0 card for about $10 on eBay. I mean, **** .. you can literally find them in the ****ing trash.
All of you people who would see 99% of players NOT have an upgrade so you can *****, ***** and ****ing whine about how your PC has to be up-to-date with where gaming systems were AN ENTIRE TEN YEARS AGO can emo-rage quit all you want.
Can I have your stuff?

Given that the current eve UI feels like the window manager of some obscure *nix operating system from the 90ties, only buggier, the new UI framework gives me a glimpse of hope. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

I guess you get what you pay for, as my Macs typically last me at least five years running current software and OSes, and usually years more running older software or alternative low-end OSes like Xubuntu. For gaming of course I expect less, but MMOs need to take a longer view. If you're going to run a game for 10+ years it's not unreasonable to expect lesser system requirements, even as updates occur over time. -- Frog blast the vent core! |

Point is it works. Performance .. you get what you pay for. But all those saying the 3.0 requirement is some roadblock and OMGIAMQUITTHEGAME are idiots.

Edited by: Galadriel Vasquez on 31/05/2011 09:57:34 To all the Techophobes - I would suggest an Nvidia 460GTX 1gb GFX card - they are constantly recommended in PC hardware magazines for being very punchy and set at a good price point. Also I recommend at least 4gb of DDR3 RAM and an Intel i-5 Quad Core Chip - These items were top of the range about 10 months ago and now you can get them at very good prices.
Good Luck CCP today.

Does this patch finally allow large fonts for modern screens or does CCP want blind players to not see what tons of rubbish they put into game lately and didn't again fix old issues???

THIS! Dammit CCP, I'm sure you can afford to licence a font that has been designed to be read on screen, like Segoe UI or Calibri (you might not even have to licence them, they come installed with Windows). I'm fed up with squinting at the horribly designed font you use. You don't even use ClearType, which also comes installed with Windows!
Sorry but the chat window is an important part of the game for me, and this has been on my nerves for a LONG time!

I swear..
The reason we have progressed so slowly in graphics is because of two reasons. One: people who insist in buying ONLY consoles. Two: people who want every game to work on their Commodore 64.
Honestly, spend a few extra bucks and set yourself up for the next few years. And no, you don't have to buy the "latest" anything, just you would do the world a favor if you kept yourself AT LEAST two years behind.
Also, "Mac" and "Apple" are synonyms "trash". If you own one, you have just spent $1000 for some genuine ****.

One more time for clarification; does this patch render all non-shader 3 machines unable to play? Was prepared to not be able to play for awhile after first incarna release, but this patch was unexpected and well im ill prepared for a new pc immediately.
