I was reading this and was thinking about the point defense systems the galente were designing. being gal, I figured they would be drones, but they could be hardpoint mounted automated weapons. anyways, my thought is, what about it? point defense systems, they will activate in a certain range, do light damage compaired to what else it would replace. so if it were drones there would be light, med, and heavy versions but they would do about 10% of the damage a normal one would do. if it were hardpoint mounted it would be small, med, and large and would again do maybe 10% of the damage of the same size guns. in either case they would lock onto missiles and drones that got within the short activation range and try to take them out. they would have their own locking mechanisms meaning it would not take up or knock out any of your locking capabilities. in the case of hardpoint mounted, it would be a constantly activated energy weapon that does not use ammo, uses cap for scanning and internal capacitor charging, but does the same damage types as normal energy weapons. in the case of drones, it would take up the same size as the equivalent size drone, would hug to the ship but would otherwise act like sentries in that it just stays still. there would be a skill for mounting them, but at most it would just help with the CPU usage or something as you train it up. it would not be affected by gunnery/drone skills since it's entirely self sufficient, and basically you jsut give them permissions to leave the ship and point where they can be. unfortunately I also see this using more serverside CPU power. but I guess it would not need to be transfered out to clients and just calculate if the point defense destroyed the missile or not. TL;DR, guns/drones that will take out missiles/combat drones but does less damage.

yes, but that has an extremely long cycle period. these would have a max ROF but would only fire when something is there.

This would absolutely ruin the purpose of flying Caldari. Just throwing that out there. Or were you thinking of having the point defence guns miss?
Though it would cause a massive drop in popularity of Drakes, which is fine by me.
Unless the Caldari hybrid boats become excellent rather than just 'ok'.

that's why they have less damage done is so the missiles may still have a chance to get by. and in the case of drones, they would be just as destroyable as regular drones, so you could point them out to a fleet mate with guns and have them take out the drones. and there could be a chance for them to miss based on tracking.

Nice idea. It must be energy, hybrid and projectile versions of Point Defence Weapon. Using corresponding skills and bonuses. Small, high rate of fire, and with automatic targetting of missiles. drones, etc... Of course, some Caldari might object, but fitting PDW increases missile/ drone defence at cost of ships firepower. And Gallente drones will be hit by those systems too.

Pretty good idea tbh, though all it really needs is a revamp to defender missiles. --- There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |

We already have point defense weapons. They are called defenders, and they need to be fixed. For one they need to be able to refire without players having to mash the fire button (have them toggle on and off and keep firing on salvos as they appear come in rather than turning off right away like they do now, and having to be reactivated when more missile appear) -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

Nerf Gallente! My Hurricane was killed by a Brutix blob! Thankfully, I managed to take out about 20 Brutixes before I popped.

I know there are defender missiles, but those require launcher hardpoints, meaning primarily caldari ships can even think about fitting them. I know you can get smart bombs to fire faster, but you will still only fire once every 15 seconds or so. after looking at the real numbers on them I have never actually used one.
