This'll probably go down like a flaming-helicopter in a tornado but worth a shot.
In the game Perpetuum Online (fun game btw, it's very similar to EvE including the skills. It's also a little different.
Instead of training a certain skill each level, you gain certain number of skillpoints every second, you can spend these skill point on various skills.
It would be nice to have something like this in EvE. This would resolve a number of issues, namely 3 things:
- When you take a long break your always "training" - You don't always have to have a set training path - You can never "forget" to add something in your queue
It altogether creates a little easier skill progression in the game and would be easier for new players.
Now once you have enough for a level of a skill, you can desposit them and it insta-trains it.
Now if they decided to incorporate this into EvE, it would be fairly simple. Everybody would keep their current skills, but if you have something in your training queue, all the skillpoints currently trained would go into your skillpoint pile and you would continue gaining skillpoints as-is.
What you guys think?

I can see how it would appeal to people but I don't believe Eve needs dumbing down or 'softening' and this would just contribute to that. ~~~

Edited by: Sir Oliver Midwestshire on 11/06/2011 19:14:28 It's a neat idea but the skill progression in this game is fine as it. At least the current system forces us to log in once in a while.
Maybe it could be a special sort of thing? For people who are away from EVE for months, even years at a time (Military, Disaster Relief etc).
Maybe to thank them for their work, they get something like this? That way when they come back they aren't 6 months behind in skills. I'm not sure how this could be done without people abusing it or causing privacy concerns though.

Edited by: Cathleia on 11/06/2011 19:19:12 It'd be one of the last things I hate about Perpetuum though, but it really takes the feel of progressing away.
I could buy 10 plexes, sell them, buy every skill book and come back in a year or 2 to become a insta cap pilot that knows nothing about fighting, eve politics etc.

Yea, but the thing is you could do that in EvE now, you just have to log in a little more

.. which isn't that different from doing it now, except you have to keep an eye on EVEmon?
People's obvious objection is that it doesn't take attributes into account .. ?

You wouldn't have to devise and maintain a skill plan.
It also encourages less logging in, which is something CCP are definitely not interested in encouraging. ~~~

The atribute thing could be solved by having all 5 current attributes affect SP/Second

It would relieve the strain on the servers though, paying but not playing clients are the best clients I'd say!

That doesn't change the fact that CCP actually want active players and won't do anything to directly lower that. ~~~

That's actually not to bad of an idea for it. I actually had a friend who I use to play with who end up quitting for this very reason. He was nearly a year behind when he returned and starting over from scratch just didn't appeal to him, nor did having a 2 year old character with barely 10 million SP.
Otherwise logging on to update a queue takes all of 5 minutes, if that. I, like most people, have taken several few month breaks from Eve, but so long as you keep EveMon installed and as a startup program it's notifications will always manage to remind you to log on. Especially since it'll spam the crap out of you until your queues are full.

You do have a point but it either your playing the game or not. It's not gonna change anything for the already in-active people who log in once every 2 weeks, if your in-active your in-active, nothing CCP can do about it

Well I don't use a skill plan, I just train for what I feel like/need. This is a game, not a job. Altho that's another point ;)

I think it's a great idea for Perpetuum but for the same reasons as people state it really wouldn't work for Eve. Taking me almost 40 days to train Amarr Dread 5 and I intent to fly it in a gatecamp, but I spent the time actually training it so it means that much more to me and losing it in the most facepalming way makes me want to touch myself

Wow, I remember setting alarms for crazy times to remind me to wake up and set a skill training...
Personally I like that it takes effort to log in, choose a skill and set it training.
Furthermore, the planning of attribute respecs is a tactical choice. If you know what you want to train and bother to sit down and plan a years worth of skills then you can gain an advantage for that forward planning by repeccing to best reflect the atts needed for those skills.
Its a small thing but as was mentioned before, this would be a dumbing down of the skilling system. Removes all planning. Please move this to the F&I forum where it can be doused in petrol and flamed properly.

Basically, your proposition is that you can't be arsed to plan a skill progression so everyone who does put in that time and effort shouldn't get any rewards for having done so? Get out. If you're gonna be lazy, then stop moaning that being lazy doesn't get you anywhere.

Edited by: Mars Theran on 12/06/2011 02:02:07 It would save me having to log in now and then when I'd rather just go straight to watching a movie on Netflix. Also, I wouldn't actually have to remember when each of my 3 accounts skill queues was going to end, so I'd get to avoid that No skill in training message.
My opinion, really: I think you should be able to set up a week-long skill plan at max, and actually have to plan it out. Possibly even injecting skills you want to train in order with the plan if they are in your cargohold. If you happen to be going to basic training, have a year paid for, and won't see a PC in 3 month's, then I see no reason why you couldn't petition for a queue extension with some longer skills added to it.
Sure, why not, but let's not be rediculous about it. Continuous training for a year without logging in, whenever you want, is a bit silly.
edit: sorry, saw the reference to Perpetuum Online, but never heard of it. SP/second? maybe, but to make it fair it would have to be modified depending on your remap and skills it is spent on, (which could be exploited), or be slowest possible advancement, (which is actually unfair). And when I say unfair, I mean play or not, you are still paying.

Sheesh, this is a game, not your whole life career (least I hope it ain't). If you spent long enough planning out the skill progression that you would get mad if it turned useless you need to change some priorites in life bro

I'm almost convinced that for some people, it really is. Fairly certain I've talked to people on these forums and in game, who do nothing but sit at home and play EVE. For sake of Nullsec Alliances, I can't understand how they possibly have time to do all they do, and when you consider all the spare time for EVE Vegas, Fanfest, Gamescon, E3, and all the rest they have, I suspect they are for the most part stinking rich and have nothing better to do. The amount they drink in any given sitting is evidence enough of that.

Some people don't want to waste all their time on a game Spank, and I can understand that. I personally invested over 2 years of my life, (while working for a living and doing everything else),into this sodding game, and can't say the reward has been worth it. It was in point of fact, a clear waste of time, the only reward for which was a couple pseudo friendships with some old corpmates. That is tempered by the fact that they all got caught up in meta-gaming and ganking, which means in the end, they were playing a game I wasn't interested in and I left.
Skill training and planning isn't work btw. It doesn't even qualify as effort.
