Please, this is an irritating feature on so many web sites. You click on a link and a new tab opens instead of just loading the page within the current tab. To my knowledge, there aren't any way I as a user can prevent this. However, if the default option was to open the link within the tab, all browsers afaik allows you to either open a new tab for the link by right clicking, pressing the middle mouse button or use another default hotkey.
If this is done because you're worried I might leave the forums for another site by pressing a link, I can assure you I have three options to use the "back" button: Either navigate to the visual button in my browser, pressing <backspace> or use the one hotkeyed to one of my mouse buttons.
Here's a nice summary of my opinion on the matter:
Quote: Opening up new browser windows is like a vacuum cleaner sales person who starts a visit by emptying an ash tray on the customer's carpet. Don't pollute my screen with any more windows, thanks (particularly since current operating systems have miserable window management). If I want a new window, I will open it myself!
Are there any good reasons to open links in new tabs by default, instead of allowing the user to be in control? If I want a new tab, I'll open it myself - or I'll open the link, read and then go back.
This was a bit of a rant, but I'm essentially asking why new tabs should open by default.

Everywhere on every page... I right click link --> open in a new tab.

So thats good imho.

This was basically my point: you have the option to open links in a new tab at your heart's desire; I don't have any say in the matter when I don't want links in new tabs.

This sounds like a browser settings issue rather than code. What browser are you using? _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

It's the forum code. Most of the links in the forum have the target attribute set, target="_blank". This means clicking the link will open a new window.
Links to the following destinations always open in a new window (target="_blank"):

Edited by: Chandler Urandom on 12/06/2011 02:14:48 It is caused by having target="_blank" in the HTML. This actually tries to open a link in a new window altogether, but that is disabled by default in most browsers, to open in new tab instead. I use both Firefox, Chrome and Opera at times.
Ed: It's only external sites, yes.

The OP comes off as if all internal links (Say, to General Discussion, Out of Pod, etc) all open in a new tab as well, though.

If that's the case, you could grab Tab Mix Plus for firefox and force every link ever into the current tab. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Edited by: Kieron VonDeux on 12/06/2011 02:22:22 Heh, I use IE 8 and don't have this issue. It just opens in a new window, which is fine for me.
One more thing to cry about I guess.
Edit: I do remember having an issue like the OP, but I changed my IE settings and the issue went away. Funny how that works.

To me, all pages that are part of "eveonline.com" are "internal". They're part of the same property, so having them spawn new windows is irritating, even if it wasn't irritating enough to have any link open a new window for me.

If I may, I'd like to enquire as to why you feel that is preferable to being able to keep everything contained. Surely if you're keeping opening new windows, you're closing the older ones? And if so, why open all these new links in new windows? The pages you want to keep an eye on can go in tabs, you can have windows for if you're watching a youtube video on one monitor whilst browsing in another window for sure, but still, why windows over tabs? _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Err, opening in new windows is worse. The reason links opens in new tabs is to prevent them from opening in new windows(the nineties called...), so that you don't have 10 windows to alt+tab through.
Who uses IE, anyway?

Yes, it's in no way a suggestion to improve the user friendliness and user control of the site.

Whoa, you're the opposite of me.
I certainly don't like pop-ups but if i'm clicking a link to an external site I always want a new tab and often a new window entirely so I can read the reffering and landing page side by side and preserver my abiltiy to go back on one to open the other few tabs on that page I might want. Somteimts i read them one by one but somtimes I want to open all of them and decide which is interesting or just leave it open to come back to after I've completed reading a thread etc.

Maybe he's sitting on a 1024x768 screen and has his IE-windows 'fullscreen' and uses the task bar as 'tab'-bar? Dunno, some people are backwards.
Anyway, I have to +1 this here:

I make new windows with several tabs in them when I know the actual window will be overwhelmed with tabs (searching stuff for work and opening several pages of similar/comparable content at the same time and going back and forth between them) or if the tabs of the current window fit into maybe.. normal-day-time-use and the other stuff is entirely for like electronics or research on pc gear.

My browser has the option to turn this feature on for specific sites. I do this for search engine and forum pages, for example. I don't usually use the feature on the EVE-O forums simply because I open the original post in a new tab, and any exploration I do can be unwound by simply going "back" all the way to the original post. Anything interesting along the way might get bookmarked or Instapapered.
I really don't need the forums making the decision for me about opening content in a new page every time.

If you don't use a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can use another hotkey when you click. For instance, in Firefox you can hold down <ctrl> and then left-click by default. Just like that you have your tab. My point was that you always have an easily accessible option to open a link in a new tab, the ones who doesn't want a new tab, do not have a choice in the matter.

I do this often too, and as such I already have a lot of tabs open. This is also why I don't always want links to open in a separate tab.
What I'm saying is that it's more user friendly to give this control to the user. If I want a new tab for a specific link without target="_blank", I can simply use one of the many easy ways to open it in a new tab; if I want it in the same tab, I just click it. I don't see a good reason why links should open in new tabs by default, when there are many ways to do this from the browser.

Edited by: Chandler Urandom on 12/06/2011 11:01:21 Ok, so we can safely conclude that some like it as it is, others don't. The problem here is that opening links in tabs manually is very easy to do (You can even configure your browser to do this automatically), but choosing not to open links in additional tabs is not something you can adjust settings for or whatnot. That is also why I asked why it is the way it is? I fail to see any reason as to why people shouldn't be able to choose for themselves whether to open links in new tabs or not, when it's so very, very trivial to to it manually and/or have them open by default.
Also, F&I is for game-related ideas, as it clearly states in the description. This is why I posted in GD.
Ed: This isn't exactly an urgent issue, but I frequently browse forums and such, and I find it rather frustrating to get a new tab opened for every single link I click - especially considering I have a perfectly working "back" feature, and that there are apparently no obvious reasons why it should be this way.

Are you just trolling at this point? It has been made clear that opening additional windows is an even less desirable alternative.
