I understand that Incarna will be running on shader 3.0 but im in that crowd where we are unable to support Shader 3.0 because of our graphics cards. My question is will there be a way to turn shaders off to allow us to keep playing EVE or is this the new line CCP has drawn?

Anything less than SM3.0 is already below minimum spec for the game and hasn't been supported for many months now. If you somehow manage to get it to work anyway, you can count yourself lucky, and it will only be up to you to make it work.
I seem to recall that there are DirectX debugging tools that let you either disable or simulate SM3 requirements, but those are the kinds of trick you'd have to rely on. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

You can't turn it off, except CCP would allow you to see nothing (running a *black* client much?). Even the UI drawing has been moved over to the graphics engine on the GPU..
Get a graphics card that is less than 4 years old and you'll be able to see something (getting decent fps is a completely different matter though).
If you're sitting on a laptop, sorry pal, that's your fault.
And yes there are actual chips out there (DX11) on cards with low profile, so that you can update your cheap-office-to-small-to-fit-a-full-size-card-rig OR there are even remotely actual chips on AGP boards out there which support DX10 afaik.

You can turn them down (form high to low) I think that is about it.
Also any bottom of the barrel video card supports shadier 3.0, you can get a ATI 6570 for under $100 and it supports shadier model 4.0

Oh bummer ... Was going to link a few video cards you could buy for around $60 to get you playing, but that won't do much good. :)

Pro Tip: Get either a laptop where you can swap graphics-cards the next time (special gaming laptop rigs allow this, but they're expensive and the upwards compatibility isn't always there yet) OR Get a mini-ITX form factor housing + MB where you can fit a low profile graphics card and update it some years down the road, that is nearly as mobile. OR Hope for one of those streaming services, where the game is rendered on a central server and you get the output on your not-so-beefy-machine (implies decent bandwidth and you to be not a hard-core-pvp'er because of lag)

According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X3100
You've got Shader 4.0 and DX10 support, so you should be fine. That not right?

Was that you posting as Astroyka Ikkala?
If so, see my above post... If not, what kind of video does your laptop have?

I've seen several websites now that say the x3100 has either 3.0 or 4.0, so you should be fine... Hence, why you have been able to keep playing.

Eh..... Time to get a new rig to something decent. There won't be many "new games to play" that you'll be qualifying for much longer, if at all. Technology moves along, and so will games, otherwise they whither and die.

I can safely say that the X3100 does indeed support SM3.0 ù it's what my old MB Air had, and it ran EVEà just fine ehmà at all. I could even use the character creator, which is no more demanding in terms of standards than the CQ. That said, it won't be fast, but it will run. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Not that theres anything wrong with playing eve on a mac, what frustrates me is that even apple doesnt really care with giving their customers driver updates. Its like they do it whenever they feel like it.

I thought my not exactly new PC might have problems as well but it says "DirectX 10.0, Shader Model 4.0, OpenGL 3.3, and PCI-Express 2.0." so I guess it's ok!
phew! :p

I've heard that the "Load station environment" button works for Incarna too, rendering a static image rather than the CQ. Would this bypass the shader issue?

I agree, I have been a mac user for years, but they didn't support my graphics card for updates making it unusable for incarna. Also being an imac, virtually impossible to replace the card. So, I purchased a desktop win7 tower for $500 that will be decent for gaming, it was a display model in a store but never used, so it was $120 off. If you can afford a new pc I would recommend checking the shelf/clearance models, there are good deals to be had.

Or you could just bootcamp Windows... I have a Win7 install on mine for a few games that I like to play that I can't get on MacOS.
