I have a great idea which would require a person to be at the computer and mining during the mining process, and also a way to make it fun!
Basically, show a "mining stream" of the minerals being sucked up into your hold. The miner has to manually pick out the pretty ore from the stream of useless byproduct rocks that get sucked up. Someone AFK will get a heap of useless rock, while a miner will actually have their hold full of ore that can be refined into the proper minerals.
This makes it interactive and fun...maybe you can include some easter-egg stuff that gets sucked up into the stream, and prevents people from profting from AFK activities.

Well as the stream goes by, kind of like a conveyor belt of sorts, you can also get all kinds of random neat things like gem deposits or other unique sellables that would keep the feel of mining alive. basically, there's always that rush that you could get something neat in the stream that passes by instead of the feeling of "oh boy...another Veldspar rock"
But you'd only be able to pick out the cool things if you are actually mining and not AFK.

Heh... so you want me to do "stepmania" during mining?

LOL, no not like stepmania. :)
More like a conveyor belt being sucked up into your hold. You pull out the good stuff by dragging them in and let the bad stuff go by. You don't have to click things in a certain order. It's not DDR :)

So you would turn boring mining into a clickfest? :) Anyway, who mines AFK? Do you mean those poor souls mining with industrial ship with 10% performance of any decent mining ship? Or botters - which should be taken care of by CCP by banning accounts...

Do not want. When I mine, I want it to be different to the constant alertness of combat. I want to be able to sit back and chat to my corpmates. I don't want to have to pay constant attention to my mining to make money. Heck, even in combat you don't have to be doing things all the time.

I think you missed the part about finding fossilized wombats. It's too cool to pass up!

I agree with Jace. Im more into industry and mining time = corp chat time.
CCP should do something with mining for sure, but probably it should be something like more ships and stuff.
If you are bored during mining you can do something good - like signing this: Petition

As an avid miner, I want to do more. Mining should not be relaxing and a no-brainer. It should be a genuine profession where it takes some time to do well. Why should mining be any less skillful or active than Missioning or PVP?

Well.... your last post say one think about you: you are not full miner. You are solo miner that is selling ore or refined minerals.
Mining is already very nice profession. For you mining is 'boring' because you sit in a hisec belts where everything is easy, you go back to station and sell what you get for low profit.
Go to nullsec or w-space to earn real money.
If you are solo/group miner, yes, mining is boring and its good point to rest between selling / producing / inventing and gaining standing (I do all that stuff and sometimes its very stressful - especially when going with BPOs to lowsec for research or invention). Start treating sucking rock as part of something bigger you are doing - start be industry guy, not only solo can miner.
If you don't like risk (don't mine in lowsec - it's useless and much more dangerous that nullsec is) join small industry corp and be part of something bigger. I have small corp of 3. We are sucking, producing, selling and do other EVE stuff to have fun. We do it together and share the profits. You will be welcome. ____________________________________________ Character creation using 2 screens |

This is actually not a bd ideal and could be done. This wouldn't be a necessary to do all the time, just to calibrate your ships efficiency at mining the right ores. Let's says that every once in awhile the asteroids contents are not all the pure. So the miner has to adjust their ships ability to sort out the unwanted garbage from the ore.
It could be done to play like the game guitar hero. You'd see a conveyor system and the ore you need to collect is glowing and you'd have to click the appropriate f key(f1 to f5) and as you play this mini-game you are calibrating your ships systems to pull the good ore from the bad. When you hit the right number of f keys in order, at the right time, you can obtain up to 100% efficiency. This would happen only once in awhile and not all the time. So it is not like a miner would have to spend all their time mashing keys. :)
It would break up the monotony of mining and add a fun mini-game and stop botters all in one blow. :)

CCP reduce cycle time to 20 ses and turn off auto repeat - that should break the monotony

Yeah... but minigame in world full of machines, computers, AI and other future stuff to 'calibrate ship' or 'sort ore' sounds little funny :] Don't you think? It's like winning 1 pipemania level to open locked container. You loose, container stay sealed. (i think BioShock had something like that) ____________________________________________ Character creation using 2 screens |

Yeah...a game about a future where people in a pod of goo fly a ship. As if the human brain in 30k years will be better than a computer or even a remote. The fact that they even need a pilot is laughable. |

...and "afterburners" shouldn't work in outer space ...and there should be no sound ...and your ship should not slow to a stop ...and you shouldn't be wearing sunglasses if you're in a pod of goo ...and nothing should be burning ...and BACON should be hardwired into every ship by now ...and CONCORD should program gates to keep criminals out instead of reacting to them "suddenly" showing-up ...and technically shields would only work for energy-based weapons ...and why aren't people building entire ships out of the super-material that pods are made from ...and how can a teensy frigate possibly generate the power necessary to stasis-web the movement of a mile-long freighter ...and why can CONCORD be immediatly notified if you fire on someone, but not if an unidentified user accesses your can ...and, sorry...I got bored. :)

I wondered why we haven't yet had our minds uploaded into quantum computers, skip the cyborg crap with you feeble mind linked to a the computer woman for help, and do all the ship calculations and operations ourselves millions of times faster, like it were just breathing, rather than we could with our biological brain plugged into a computer.
Why waste all those resources growing and keeping a clone of yourself when you could just upload your mind's conscious and memories instantly by means of quantum entanglement from your old quantum computer brain to a new one somewhere safe should the need arise?
I could think up this stuff all day, things that would be cool for RP, futurist ideas, and would fit right in with game play mechanics.

How does this do anything but make mining even more tidious.. and at the same time make it impossible for multi-boxing to function well enough to be worth running?

Agree really. Mining on one half of the screen showing rats, firefox on the other half, teamspeak in the background.
That does not mean macro mining or mining with barges shouldn't be fixed. If anything, a barge should get a 50% mining laser penalty.
Who seriously mines in a barge anyway..... ?
