The thread to discuss the DDOS (think its the first).
Links: http://twitter.com/#!/lulzsec http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/06/titanic-takeover-tuesday-lulzsecs-busy-day-of-hacking-escapades.ars
"Next in line were the login servers for the game EVE Online. The effect of this attack was to bring down the EVE Online website at the same time, though LulzSec insists that this was not the actual target. In response to the DDoS, CCP Games, makers of EVE, have taken all their systems offline, for fear that they might be hacked. The company has also issued a statement to assure customers that their personal information remains secure."

My guess is CCP took down the website themselves, while figuring out the extent and seriousness of the attack. Better safe then sorry. The Sony-hacks probably has the whole industry on their toes, jumping at shadows.

Edited by: Celeritas 5k on 14/06/2011 23:20:08 The difference is sony made several moronic security mistakes, while CCP did everything right. They might have been a little on the paranoid side, but when you're weighing a few hours of lost gametime against the possibility of leaking real world private information it's prudent to be paranoid.
This kind of thing is why CCP has kept my business for years, and will continue to receive it for years to come.

I also think we (the players) should get free SP. 6hrs is still a long time for a "downtime". More over CCP should have been ready for this type of attack.
I will also mention the Sony network hack to personal data and such so it's pointless to compare that attack to the DDOS that was launched against CCP

Sorry for the claim, the website was running incredibly slow when I posted. Nonetheless, worth a discussion.
Its good that they took servers offline as a precaution, the last thing any of us want is our personal information being breached. However, it seems that Titanic Takeover Tuesday was just something designed to disrupt for lulz. Sony was only mentioned due to the downtime link and not the severity of the breach; I also do not expect free SP I was just waiting for the responses of people asking for it...

This has nothing to do with Sony. Lulzsec do it for the lulz, pure and simple.

At first I found LulzSec's shenanigans amusing. But as they attack more and more gaming networks, they're alienating more and more of their fans. I for one wasn't amused that I couldn't log into eve, or League of Legends, or watch videos on The Escapist's website. As they continue on gallivanting around the web Lulzing at security, they're going to find that more and more people aren't Lulzing with them. My day was pretty much offline. So -3 LulzSec. -1 for killing eve when i wanted to play that. Minus another one for killing my backup. And, -1 for killing Yahtzee.

So you would rather them leave the database open for youre personal details to be released by a very immature tallented group publicly ? Personally i am glad they took the servers offline while they was being attacked, especially after reading what the group who attacked eve-o has been up too, going around attacking everyone blindly and releasing peoples personal details worldwide (not a good move).

Don't be moronic. CCP's was the appropriate reaction. A DDOS is the perfect cover for executing a more severe security breach.

Yeah, sure, they sure knows that it would be only a DDoS, and as most of their employees most be LulzSec followers on Twitter, they should have known that nothing more than that would happen... right? Better be safe than sorry. I bet you'd be the first to crap on CCP for not reacting fast enough if there was an intrusion happening in their DBs.

If the stuff I was reading during the down time was correct, these guys stole the id Tech 4 source code via Brink over the last few days. CCP had the proper reaction to being attacked.

Uh, what? Why do all the morons who base their knowledge of cybercrime on Hollywood movies feel that they have to preach their ignorance to the masses?
What, exactly, do you think is the correct response to a DDoS this size?
1) Disconnect everything, in case it is a cover for a sneakier information retrieval attack
2) Disconnect everything even if it's just a DDoS, because 6 hours downtime is cheaper than the infrastructure necessary to prevent this kind of attack, and if you take their target away the sociopathic children will grow bored and go away
3) Have Jack Bauer instruct Chloe to open a socket to the servers at Division, release an Internet Harpoon (TM) to force their computers to stay connected, detect their TCP stack with the protocol analyzer, hack into the satellite feed, pinpoint their address and dispatch a CTU strike team
I expect you are going to pick number 3)

Edited by: Cpt Fina on 14/06/2011 23:36:49 I'm just glad that Eve's back up again.
I was getting abstinence symptoms like uncontrollable shaking and cold sweating after just an hour of downtime.
Hopefully ppl direct the blame at the 35 year olds living on their moms basement who did this.
Let's get on with the internet spaceship game.
