Edited by: BiggestT on 19/06/2011 14:58:28 Fun article, alas it does not dispel the zompocalypse so easily if you consider the classic zombie lore..Seeing as it's a slow, Sunday night, I'm extremely bored, and procrastination feeds laziness, Imma review this b!tch..
Point 7-5: Decay, predation, and biochemical issues.
Predation by large animals is not too big a deal considering the sheer number of zombies (billions) that would result; the amount of time avaialbe for these predators to exploit their newly found food source is negligible because (as stated by the article) the zombies will rot quickly thus becoming unattractive to apex predators, even if they are moving around and groaning for everything to see and catch.
The decay from bacteria and insects is less important than one may think. Even for advanced stages of decay, zombies will still move about and attack (e.g. near-skeletal zombies in Romero's Land of the Dead). It seems that zombies barely rely on the same laws that 'normal' animals do. E.g. they won't die if their heart is destroyed, they still move with muscle wastage etc. After all, a satanic (e.g. Romero's Dawn of the Dead) super-virus has killed them and brought them back to psuedo-life, so I don't think typical biochemical constraints are really an issue here
Point 4: Biting as the only vector.
While biting is the main vector to spread the pathogen, the start of the disease begins with something else e.g. infected meat, water etc. Given enough cases and widespread 'first contact', the ensueing mayhem may be enough to get a pandemic started. All you need is a packed dark area (like a music festival mwuhahaha) and the disease could spread quite easily. Given the tendency for symptoms to appear at different times e.g. in Romero's Dawn of the Dead: ranging from near instantanious to several minutes, it could be difficult to track all who were bitten (e.g. went home early from the aforementioned festival and don't feel well...).
Point 3: Day to day damage.
Again, it doesn't seem to affect a zombies ability if it loses vital organs and muscles, see before.
Point 2: Physical Barriers.
We've all seen the hordes of zombies that overcome even the most cleverly constructed barriers because of their overwhelming numbers. They eventually break through doors or whatever to access their increasingly rare meals. As for geographical barriers: again, numbers will help overcome this. Recall Dawn of the Dead where one guy fires 10,000 rounds into the zombie horde but they still just keep coming despite huge losses. Also, zombies are rarely seen alone in these movies and have nothing but time to find a path to whatever isolated location survivors might still reside.
Point 1: Weapons.
One needs to remember that zombies only fall once shot in the head. Even a grenade or .50 cal won't stop them. Hunting and military operations become a lot harder when you have to try and conserve ammo, hit a very small area, have the pressure of death if you miss (ouch!), and that you have to shoot your buddy if he/she gets infected before they infect you (however narcissistic you are, it would be difficult to shoot your wife of 10 years, especially in the face ). In addition, It may not be plausible just to lay waste to everything with bombs and nukes either, considering you might want to preserve whatever human life still remains to avoid destruction of the modern age.
SO yeah, tl:dr..
