I was wondering is there a effective cutoff for PE and ME research (i.e. its useless to go past this point). Looking at the BPO calculator post some put up a few topics ago, I noticed that in the spread sheet, PE ended at 94, while ME was up to 300. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Take a look at the blueprint calculator on the site in my sig.
You can play with the sliders on each blueprint, to see where the 'perfect' value is, and determine for yourself where the 'good enough' point is. They're all dependant on the volumes of materials in each. Medium rig blueprints, for example, aren't really worth taking past ME4. For some ammo, taking it to ME 129 makes sense (as you'll be doing thousands of runs) FuzzWork Enterprises http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/ Blueprint calculator, invention chance calculator, isk/m3 Ore chart-á and other 'useful' utilities. |

This is another BPO calculator that I use. What I tend to do is look at how much I'm saving materials wise compared to the amount of time I'd spend researching to that level. After a certain point you aren't saving that much compared to the length of research time.

Well my R/L puts me in a advantage/bind when it comes working on research, given that I sometimes will be away from my account for a few weeks up to a few months. The issue is how well I can effectively manage my time while I can play for crunch the rocks and putting out ships to offset the gap in play. Thanks for the responses. |

For PE, anything over 25 is a waste IMO.
For ME, it varies with BPO. The lesser of Perfect ME and ML 19 is the minimum I use for selling stuff on the market. That gives a maximum of 0.5% waste. If you are selling low margin items, waste really cuts into your profits.
If you don't have more BPOs to research, then go back around and start selectively improving ME. My corp has some battleship BPOs over 100 ML, which takes over a year. Ammo BPOs can be taken to perfect ME in a week. |

In both ML and PL, you must weigh the research time (and cost) vs. the savings.
Material Level Material waste less than 0.5 unit is rounded down, so that limits the maximum useful material level. The so-called perfect level:
Perfect Material Level (no waste) = FLOOR(2 * base waste * largest material count / (1 + base waste))
Since the base waste on an unresearched BPO is usually 10% and sometimes 5%, that can be simplified to: * For 10% base waste BPO: Perfect Material Level (no waste) = FLOOR(largest material count / 5.5) * For 5% base waste BPO: Perfect Material Level (no waste) = FLOOR(largest material count / 10.5) Where FLOOR() means ignore the fractional part.
However, there is little point spending months to research in order to save a few Tritanium. In most cases, ML 20 is plenty (0.497% waste), and in some cases still too much (small rigs, capital ships, etc.)
If over the lifetime of the BPO you are manufacturing 1000 units, 100 Tritanium is insignificant. However if you are manufacturing 100 billion (ammo) then 1000 Tritanium can be significant. Thankfully ammo BPO can quickly be researched to perfect ML, because it would be pointless if it took many decades, as is the case with most ships.
Production Level Production time is not rounded, so there is no practical limit, other than the production time itself, and the time to research. Examples: * Saving 1 day of production, but requiring a year manufacturing to break-even on the research time. * Saving 1 second might be worthwhile if you do 100,000,000 manufacturing runs (ammo) at a time.
Most BPO have 25% production time waste, but there are odd exceptions (eg. fuel blocks).
I typically try to research to PL 25 and no more than PL 50, except for stuff like ammo. |

I have done some ME research but no PE research yet. A very basic rough guide to how much ME research to do on ammo, module, & rig BPOs would be 24 hours worth. That will take them to optimum roughly. That may be of a little help to you. |
